Shocking
When I was in grad school, a bunch of us were at the house of a guy with an invisible fence for his dog. Someone wondered if it was cruel and that led to each of the grad students there except me putting on the dog's collar and then crossing the fence. (The consensus was that it really hurts, but it isn't agonizing.) At the time I knew that not shocking myself was, in some sense, the smart thing to do, but in retrospect I regret being a boring dork.
If you ever find a regular electric fence, it hurts way worse if you aren't wearing shoes. Just FYI.
Yeah but it also puts you one step closer to death.
I once stepped too close to an electric fence, barefoot, right after it rained. OW.
We would sit around the fire pit taking turns zapping ourselves with the electric fly swatter. Good times!
It allegedly hurts you much more than them due to differences in skin thickness and moisture as well as them having a load of hair in the way
You chose unwisely.
I'd love to be judgemental about this, but I'd absolutely be in that 25% of women who did it too.
I licked a 9 volt from the beeping smoke detector the other day to see if it was dead. Nobody was around to impress and it wasn't for fun, just wanted a quick result.
Would probably shock myself if stuck alone for 15 mins too. Heck, I find those shocking handle games to be hilarious fun.
Note: have ADHD which may or may not be related since I keep forgetting how much getting shocked hurts. Burns leave a mark and are more memorable so I wouldn't touch anything hot for fun.
The best part is "at least one". What's the breakdown of more than one shock?
I'm going to need the graph above that. How many shocked themselves to get aroused?
Bored people give themselves a bunch of painful shocks and when that isn't enough to feel alive they increase the amperage of the shocks. Really the perfect metaphor of all of us using doomscrolling on social media.
If I’m reading this right, the average bored person shocked themselves every 2 minutes?
I haven't even started any 15 minute waiting period and I already want to try the electric shock
Then again I'm also the guy who stuck the car cigarette lighter in, and then pulled it out and touched it with my thumb; I've literally done that twice too
Twice? But....why..?
Remove outliers
If I know that I'm in an experiment then I must gather information about the experiment.
Yeah, totally right. Although I would like to know, whether the instructor giving them the 'this button is for shocking yourself' was a woman or a men. Just ensuring not for any Interviewer bias. ...
Anyway, I am recruiting some people for a unique experiment to test something out.
I want to see the percentage who gave themselves more than one. They're the real heroes of this study.
One guy shocked himself 190 times
That guy was running his own study. “How many times can I shock myself before I breach the ethical limits of the study and they cut the session short”.
He underestimated their resolve though, clearly.
That's more than one every 5 seconds lmao
He probably spammed the button at some point, just to see what that would feel like
When you minmax your masochism stat.
All of these participants had received a sample of the shock and reported that they would pay to avoid being shocked again.
From: https://news.virginia.edu/content/doing-something-better-doing-nothing-most-people-study-shows , so the chart is actually measuring the second shock.
Oh, those are the scientists. And yes, they're the heroes of this study!
Don't forget the one guy who shocked himself 190 times in the 15 minute period.
Don’t kink shame.
13 shocks per minute on average xd literally spamming the button
Literally every 4-5 seconds.
"Ow, that was painful. What would happen if I press the button again?"
"Not so bad now that I'm expecting it! Wonder if the third time is even less."
“Still hurts but not as bad as the first or second time… I wonder how long they’re going to be gone.. I wonder if it would hurt more or less if I strapped it to a.. different location…”
I'd zap my dick and give them a whole new category for their charts!
'Cause when a guy does something stupid once, well, that's because he's a guy,
— Once-ler, 2012
While I know that's not how stats work, I find it completely correct to belive that one women gave herself a shock from 4 participants, and 70 men did.
Can't believe they shocked themselves :o
Meanwhile millenials:
Trying to figure out what that is.
(In a bad millennial. My mind went to some sort of weird sex toy.)
We just want to feel something, OK?
That toy has been in my Amazon cart for like a decade lol
Some buddies and I once spent an evening passing around a bug zapper and having a go at it, to the concern of the one girl present. We were like 22 tbf
Dudes shock
I would like to see a study done with several groups:
I've heard a lot of people claiming some of these groups are better than others of these groups, but I'm rooting for a null result.
I'm really surprised no one here said they would pull down their pants and start violently jerking off while intently staring at the researchers through the one-way window thing.
How do you think we got the job?
Girls not curious or just used their knowledge base?
Every participant experience the pain once before being put in the room alone with the device, they all know.
That actually knocks out knowledge AND curiosity. It's just what the paper says-- boredom.
An article linked here said they associated the results with men's "higher sensation seeking behavior". I read that as men are needier.
That's... just not what that means? At least for the normal definitions of those words.
where's the 2 or more chart?
Boys rule
Ick. liberal.chaser.zone
Gurls drool
I need to see a chart of how many times they shocked themselves
Do you know how many times I've tested the cattle electrified fence just to see what would happen?
Two times?
That isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
Where is the shock happening? I might be pressing the button a lot if it's to the prostate.
Checks out. I'm a man and I would definitely administer at least one shock to myself. Probably upwards of ten.
Boooring.
Hey...
ZAP.
There is a funny sub at the other place /r/whywomenlivelonger. Or something similar.
More like r/whymenhavemorefuninlife, what's the point of living longer if you live a boring life?
Experiment, progress, possibly die
The fact that 25% of women did do it and 25% of men didn't is fascinating to me. What are your favorite explanations here?
I'm going with 25% of people of either gender are just sort of contrarians to their own gender and thus did what they think the opposite one would do. I feel like I would do that.
25% of all people are trans but haven't realized it yet.
That's definitely tomboy erasure. And whatever the other direction is called twink sounds kinda gay they're not necessarily gay they just like interior design.
It's 35% of men, but close enough.
Would
I just thought of the time machine ordered in Napoleon Dynamite and got a laugh.
Just use the old one hand in the back pocket trick if in doubt. And poke with a dry finger, don't dip your hand in seawater then grab on to the electrode, you'll be fine ; basic mains elec safety precautions.
I wonder if most sparkies are men - I'm not sure i've ever met a woman electrician.
Back pocket trick?
It's to prevent the person from completing a circuit across their chest if accidentally touching a ground or the like with their other arm. Hearts don't like that.
Just a way to reduce risk when working with electricity.
It's the other way around. It's not how many people that shocked themselves were women or men, it's how many men shocked themselves and how many women shocked themselves. so if 50% of men shock themselves and 10% of women shock themselves it'd add up to 60
Yes I understood that in the second reading. I deleted the comment but I guess it was not propagated in time everywhere. Also you can't add up the men's and women's percentages because the number of participates could vary between the two groups.
The 35% of men who didn't do it had previous experiences with electric shocks from fences or electronics
Every participant experience the pain once before being put in the room alone with the device, they all know.
Absolutely no way I'd shock myself in boredom willingly. I have way too much respect for myself... says the man who has on multiple occasions twisted a pencil multiple times in my hair to the point it starts to get the smallest pain reaction when I've been bored at home in the middle of the night.
Just get someone else to pull your hair, it's a lot more fun
Oh yeah I definitely would have been curious.
You gotta be sure, you know? Does it actually shock you? How bad does it hurt? Cant be too dangerous, right? Maybe you'll even like it, you won't know for sure unless you hit the button.
Also: does it only work once?
Then, a few minutes later, you start to wonder again.
Remember that reaction game where you got shocked if you weren't first to hit the buzzer? We all played that for funsies.
It's not like they were going to apply a shock that would do damage. Fuck it.
100% what went through my head when I asked myself if I would also do it.
Right? People who are like 'lol men r dumb' are the dumb ones. It's a social experiment, now a Saw puzzle.
