Why You Should Self-Host Everything
  • Omg, I pay 30€ for 1Gb/0.7Gb (ten more for symmetrical 10Gb, I don't need it and can't even use more than 1Gb/s but my inner nerd wants it) and 0.15€/KWh.

BTW the electricity cost is somewhat or totally negated when you heat your apartment/house depending on your heating system. For me in the winter I totally write it off.

  • Switching to OCaml bois
  • People (sometimes) use it far too much and in wrong ways.

Like inherit when you could just instantiate, or use a template.

Or when "everything should be a class" was also a bummer (inhetit "run()"), like I'd instantiate "main" twice (cool if it had worked I guess).

Or old code written by "wizards" where they cast cast cast instances onto other classes to use specific behaviour in crazily dangerous manners. And you're the one to "fix it" because it doesn't work well...

    Otherwise OOP is good.

  • ‘A fine line between humor and flopping’: tech summit’s rap battle is the height of corporate cringe
  • Managers are not smarter or better educated than other people.

Also, many have inflated fragile egos, and feel less worthy than those who do "the real job" (the workers) and feel the need to do stuff so they feel they are doing stuff too.

Or so I believe. It's so rarely about real productivity and so often about some sort of control. To control something they don't understand (I'm in software development).

  • Listen to a genius, kids.
  • Then one day, putins russia could roll down over the whole of Europe in one big swing.

Someone said "Every country has an army. Their own or someone elses".

Could be better for sure, but it could also be worse.

  • Lemmy server not federating (a ~1 user server)

    Hi everybody!

I have a Lemmy server up and running for some maybe 10 months, and all was nice and good until I upgraded to 0.19.1, .2 .3 backtracking to .2, again to .3.

Everything seemed to start federating again, but with a twist; for example I had to post on eurogeaphicnovels@lemm.ee to jolt my server into communication with them for example.

Seemed okay, but now it's back again (I do not check out every community I'm connected to every week or more), and posting doesn't do anything on for example artshare@lemmy.world. My post is there but I only see one answer out of two and I have like +1 on my server and more when I use this account checking out (this account is not on my server).

Note: I recently had a stupidly unlucky fiber cut for like 6 days (miss management, weekend, ...) so the server was offline for almost a week.

I tried other "navigators" than Jerboa and it's not Jerbias fault as it's the same on say Voyager.

I obviously tried reloading, restarting, posting, ...

Is there a way saving my server? Like an sql statement bringing all "dead" federation links up again as new? Maybe it's just me who doesn't make my server chat enough so some communities are flagged dead (even if I'm subscribed to them)?

    Any help greatly appreciated!

Ps. Can show screens of it if needed (but it's like yeah, mindoki server 2 votes, others more).
