Ridiculous considering that Xi is trying to make up for decades of underinvestment in rural China.
Also given the fact that Rural China pre CPC was an unrelenting hellhole that Appalachia could not imagine, where a "rich" family was one that ate Wheat and not Millet, and had meat 3 times a year.
Thrice a year was actually above average for certain parts.
My grandfather recounted having to eat boiled grass to survive winters during the occupation after my great grandfather died (in a Japanese occupied coal mine). His family would eat offal once a year during spring festival as their only indulgence.
You rarely see men that excited to be presented with liver and stomach lining, a Pavlovian response to the dishes from when he was a child. His memory of 疙瘩湯 was just boiled bits of dough seasoned with salt.

he described it as a big mound of dirt piled on shit with various pipes in it. one of the pipes got clogged (threatening a dangerous explosion) and he unclogged it and got absolutely blasted in the face and mouth with poop. he also said his work crew laughed at him lol and that it humbled him greatly. he said he realized he was not so much smarter than rural people then, they suggested originally that they just evacuate the area and let it explode but he was stubborn and didnt want to lose all the work they did making it.

During and shortly after the revolution. They fkd around afterwards, father got locked up and family got sent to the rural countryside for reeducation. After serving the prison sentence, his father did eventually redeem himself but it left a mark. This experience in adolescence is supposedly what caused Xi to develop a hard-line reder-than-red Marxist-Leninist world view and aversion to corruption when others he grew up with fell down the liberal rabbit hole. This is at least what his CIA dossier outlined as family background and early life.

Do they source that in any way? I'm sure liberal chinese pundits in the the PRC will know about him and claim to speak on behalf of the common people that he's fascinating (like liberal pundits do here), but does you average chinese industrial worker even know who that dude is?
My Chinese friend was interested in him in so far that he was nominally poor growing up but turned into fascist climber. Literally pulling the ladder up behind and then pointing the finger at all the poor behind him.

I can remember a similar streak of articles in American press during the early Obama/late bush era where they were claiming that China was fascinated by a photo of Biden wheeling his suitcase through an airport because Chinese politicians would never stoop to carrying their own bags.
