Sukhoi Su-57 - New General Megathread for the 1st-3rd of November 2024
  • I considered including Astroneer in my list but I found its exploration somewhat underwhelming. None of the locations are particularly memorable or distinct to me. The way it puts all the inventory management physically in-world is very cool though.

Sukhoi Su-57 - New General Megathread for the 1st-3rd of November 2024
  • I really enjoyed Green Hell. It does an excellent job of making the world around you go from difficult and deadly to bountiful simply by your own understanding of it. The narrative ending is a strange twist that I don't really think adds much and there's one part that runs on adventure game fridge logic right at the end, but they have kept updating it since I played so maybe those have been somewhat improved. Like Subnautica, the whole world is designed, not generated.

Raft is fun and both building and exploration heavy. The twist is that your home is what moves through the world. So you build your raft with everything you need and navigate it between islands to explore on foot. It also has a pretty good modding scene. I especially recommend a mod called Dissociation Dissimulation. The locations of the islands are generated but the islands themselves are designed.

Volcanoids is interesting. Your base is a steampunk drillship that emerges at various pre-set locations you can discover around the world. As you play you can both expand the drillship and design the modules and decorations in it. Its world is also designed.

Valheim is fun and has good building and exploration, but the combat is really designed for multiplayer.

There is, of course, Subnautica Below Zero, but I don't think it's as good as Subnautica and most or all of its base building additions have been backported to Subnautica.

  • Why does every text layout on mobile waste 20% of my screen?
  • When Wikipedia changed their default desktop layout to the current trend chasing mobile-like view a lot of people pushing the change in talk pages mentioned a study which supposedly proved that shorter lines of text are easier to read,

Seems like a skill issue tbh.

  • Vote FOR something - 2024 State Ballot Measures
  • Local TV "news" I saw my dad watching last night spent like 5-10 minutes on a sob story about some little dog getting eaten by a mountain lion.

There's a measure on the ballot to ban mountain lion hunting. They didn't directly mention it, they just left the idea of dangerous mountain lions eating your pets hanging in the viewer's brains a few days before the election.

We've all been taken by fools
  • That "civilization rebuilding" element is extensively examined and critiqued, and I think the ending of the first book is a brilliant and thematically satisfying way to bring everything together. Absolutely give it another go.

  • I'm an undecided voter

I'm not sure whether to fill in the bubble for the Greens or write in PSL. Which one would make libs madder?

At no point in that half hour is any argument put forward to suggest that Harris will have good climate policy, or any climate policy.
