What is the communist position on the definition of fascism?
  • It's more complex than that. It is the idea that, because we are all equal before the law (as opposed to before where legal privileges were inherited, bought and sold) those that have more have earned it righteously and are therefore liberated in their ability to negotiate contracts with other citizens. This, of course, is nonsense thought from a historical materialist standpoint, but from an idealist standpoint it makes total sense.

  • What is the communist position on the definition of fascism?
  • Yeah, there are a million lib essays on fascism that don't understand that there is a material root to fascism and it's contradictions. They get so caught up on 'authoritarianism' usually though, and get into comparing Mussolini, Stalin and Hitler, which gets them way off course.

The real key as well, imo, is to study the rise of Japanese fascism, because it mirrors the rise of fascism in Italy and Germany, but it does it without having a singular massive 'authoritarian' leader (because that is not how the histories of Asian people are written in the West). It's a little different because it was a continuation of the Imperial system, but you will notice that, for the most part, the Emperor himself was not a singular driving force, but that it was a collective emerging capitalist/noble class decision. It really drives home the idea that fascism is just when you are on the pointy end of capitalism.

  • "I’m just focusing on the present because the future is depressing"
  • Yeah, there is very little incentive to do well. Especially for U.S. graduate and doctoral students. Even if you do do very well, the best thing that will happen for most of them if they stay in the U.S. is that they will be taken and paid alot of money to not do research for the competition, because no-one really works on anything interesting anymore. All of the cool chemistry and industrial technologies stuff comes from China and Europe.

The problem is that the assumption is that if you had to go do a doctorate, you weren't smart (or connected) enough to dropout and become an entrepreneur. It's a really really bad system that creates huge disincentives from learning about things and pushing the boundaries of what is possible. Instead it the incentive is to learn how to do marketing and graft better.

  • It's definitely possible, the at the door photo and immediate 'go home' meme definitely made my 'well wasn't that convenient' radar go off. I am 50-50 on it right now. Either way it is good to see that the people have protocols in place for another right-wing coup.

  • I hate the stuff I have to read for my exams
  • Yeah, this kinda jargonic shit is pretty typical for your average liberal arts text. I'd love to read the studies they are citing, cause I will guarantee that there is a lot of editorializing going on here. Notice how the 'Men's coping... authoritarian communist rule' is completely uncited. The sections before and after are cited, but that part is stuck in there to make it look like it's supported, but I would make a safe bet that neither study actually says that because if they did, they would quote the study's author directly. Also notice how that trend continues through the page.

I had this kind of problem all the time when I did my liberal arts degree and my grade would suffer for it depending on the professor. Never enough to get a 'C', but I am legitimately getting better grades in my engineering classes now because I don't have to deal with this level of interpretative, editorialized and adhoc bullshit. Shit's tough, especially if you actually take the science seriously, unlike a lot of these authors.

  • The mythologizing of Killdozer continues
  • The mistake he made was thinking that 'everything is for sale' especially in small towns. Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on your perspective), in these small towns you have to earn friendship through years of casual sexism and racism, and if someone comes in and starts buying up property but not interacting with the community, they will find themselves having all kinds of 'trouble' very quickly. The real key is to buy something in the dilapidated downtown, then renovate it completely, make it look nice, and sell, idk, 'antiques' out it. Then the city won't care if you use your property outside the town as a hazardous waste site or whatever.

  • Seeing old geezers (millennials) on Reddit codgering around, posting unsolicited lectures on /r/genz and falling in the same self-aggrandizing apathy of previous generations.
  • It's the U.S. any morality or empathy that you can develop in your teens and college is quickly and decisively stripped away from you by the universalized and all-pervasive corporate culture. People mistake it as a generational thing, and while some aspects are, contempt for the kids is consistent.

  • You basically summed it up.

It's more like once the money dried up for the socialist and progressive movement outside of some podcasts and the DSA, Dasha and Anna just decided to jump onto the next easiest band-wagon, which in the New York arts scene is Alt-right but hot because we're ironic about it and everyone involved does cocaine and has money. Then Dasha got a bit part in Succession, and now has really leaned into the trad-Cath.

At this point they are basically on the same tired hot-girl podcast grind, except instead of petty DSA stuff it's petty NY art scene and weird religious grievances stuff. They are just provocateurs and trend followers at heart.
