The use of content warnings on !asklemmy
---
TL;DR
Use spoilers for NSFW content that is "within reason" and doesn't break Rule 1 like this :
> \::: spoiler My NSFW warning > > My NSFW comment or post content > > :::
This will look like (click the triangle) :
My NSFW warning
My NSFW comment or post content
---
The longer version
The community rules which seem to need to be balanced by the mods most are:
- Be nice & have fun, and
- NSFW is okay, within reason.
The lemmy.world site rules also state:
---
We are not a free speech zone. This CoC lays out expected standards of conduct and behavior. You cannot say or post anything that violates these rules or principles and remain a member of our community. You must follow this CoC. If you are looking for something else, please do. It is not here.
The Moderators are not morality or thought police. Moderators are guided by this Code of Conduct. Post what you want, if what you post follows these rules, principles and the goals outlined above. Not every member of the community will appreciate controversial or explicit posts so use Content Warnings very liberally. We use Content Warnings so community members themselves can decide whether they want to see or engage with a post that may be controversial or explicit.
Bullies, trolls and disruptors are not welcome. We will moderate accordingly.
This is a voluntary community. You chose to be here. When you choose to join, you have implied that you agree with this Code of Conduct and will follow it.
---
Moderators seek to apply these, sometimes conflicting, rules. In doing so we take the balance of probabilities approach. The majority of comments which have been removed to date have been a clear breach of community Rule 1, however sometimes balancing the requirement to be accepting of NSFW content and the requirement for participants to be nice can be difficult. To make this easier, posters and commentors are encouraged to use the spoiler functionality in markdown to create a content warning on asklemmy. Posts that use a spoiler are less likely to be removed when considering whether they are "within reason" NSFW.
To create a spoiler, use three colons ":" followed by the word "spoiler" and then the warning text to create a content warning. Type your comment(s) on the lines below and then three colons at the end to end the spoiler.

- What was made beautiful?
What did other people do in the past to make our world beautiful but which we do not notice now?
I am rural and I want to plant some trees and copses on my land, in particular places, with beauty in mind. It just occurred to me that others, who are long gone, may have done the same thing here in the past; planting a particular tree in its place only for its beauty. It may have outlived both themselves and their vision of what beauty is and I have not noticed it. Perhaps there are things around us which we thought were utilitarian, or even mistakes, but which were a choice made by someone with a subtler purpose than we give them credit for.
Have you ever noticed something in your surroundings and thought that it was done deliberately to be beautiful, and maybe you are the only person around now to have noticed it as such?
- Hey i just wanna know are raccoons evil in some kind of way ?
A lot of things i thought were cute and nice like dolphines, ducks, cats (i saw one cat eat anothers new born), dogs (multiple cases of eating dead owners due to a variety of reasons starting from trying to wake em up to other malicious reasons), hamsters etc turned out to be wrong . Raccoons are the only thing i believe in anymore so give it to me straight are they as they seem ?
Edit : To reduce confusion and to not have to answer to duplicate comments NO I do not hate animals . I think they are all neat and they are what they are and I don't hold them up to humans standard but I'm not an animal person like cat people or dog people either . I hope this clears it up.
- If you were alone in the woods, would you rather come across Windows or Linux?
Posted with my thinkpad running Arch btw.
- What's it called when an inventor's invention backfires on them?
Is there a name for this specific concept? Where somebody invents something (to do them good) but then that thing turns around and backfires on them?
- What is something you can’t live without, technology wise that saves you time?
What is something you can’t live without, technology wise that saves you time?
I have to say it’s my virtual assistant I’ve made. It saves me a lot of time with making reminders and such alarms for meetings or interviews, music etc.
- Where do I look when seated at a restaurant to seem normal?
(when seated in a group with others, i should clarify. if i'm by myself i'm absolutely happy to be on my phone or book)
i genuinely have an issue. it's like....there's people on all sides. i need to rest my eyes somewhere, esp in a social setting which is already inherently a bit wearing
- if you look down at your food, you look sad or disinterested or whatever
- if you look at the ceiling that's insane, isn't it?
so that's down and up out. let's look at:
- the sides, which have people there or nearly there, or obscuring the view of a nice window or painting, and you can't stare at people.
fuck fuck fuck. what about:
- the center. oh no. this is the nightmare zone. let's break it down into 3 sections: the top contains their face, that's quite insane to look at. downwards, the table across from you with their food, that could seem like you're looking at their body very intently, can't do that. the middle? if it's a woman, then that's very much bad form. but if you're a guy generally attracted to women, part of your brain wants to look no matter what, at least a little. and since when you're sitting, forward is the most natural direction to look (you can't really turn around or move, particularly), so you keep coming back to it and AHH FUCK
fucking nightmare.
- What plot holes could be adequately explained away with a single shot or line of dialogue?
"We've almost got some of their telecommunications cracked; the front end even runs on a laptop!" The Mac that sunk a thousand ships could have been merely clunky product placement, not a bafflingly stupid tech-on-film moment.
"Senator Amidala is in a coma. Even if she recovers, she will never be the same and may not live long." But no.... George had to have his god-damned funeral scene, even if it demanded Simone Biles levels of mental gymnastics to save Carrie Fisher's most emotionally resonant moment from ROTJ, as well as one of the more intriguing OT lore dumps.
Bonus points if a scene was scripted or filmed and got cut.

Check all the pics, is it weird photo editing or some sort of scam?
- Ladies if all the men of the world disappeared for 24 hours, they are fine they will come back, BUT during those 24 hours what are YOU doing?
This question has been around for a while but I'm curious as to your answer
- What linguistic constructions do you hate that no one else seems to mind?
It bugs me when people say "the thing is is that" (if you listen for it, you'll start hearing it... or maybe that's something that people only do in my area.) ("What the thing is is that..." is fine. But "the thing is is that..." bugs me.)
Also, "just because <blank> doesn't mean <blank>." That sentence structure invites one to take "just because <blank>" as a noun phrase which my brain really doesn't want to do. Just doesn't seem right. But that sentence structure is very common.
And I'm not saying there's anything objectively wrong with either of these. Language is weird and complex and beautiful. It's just fascinating that some commonly-used linguistic constructions just hit some people wrong sometimes.
- Looking to branch out.
Are there any apps out there like 9gag but without the disgusting hatred and racism or should I cut my losses and delete it?
- Do you clean the opening on your glass bottles?
Spouse and I have a discussion on what to do after you pour a sauce out of a glass bottle. I do nothing but my wife takes her finger and wipes the excess from the bottle before she puts the lid back on. I think touching the food is disgusting and she thinks leaving it there to gum up the lid is disgusting. What do people do?
- Women of Lemmy Can a Guy be too muscular to be attractive?
I was talking to a female friend and young Arnold Schwarzenegger came up on conversation. I pulled up a picture of him and spent a long time looking at it. Then said "I am trying to decide if he is attractive.
I know for me women who are fit and toned, attractive. Once a woman is muscular, attractive falls off a cliff. Probably because they start looking like a man.
Edit yes I am a guy
- Are kintsugi kits all the same, or are some brands better than others?
I saw plenty of kintsugi kits available in my area (to those who do not know what kintsugi is, it is the art of fixing broken ceramic/pottery items using lacquer). However, I do not know if the quality is good for the price presented by these shops. Could anyone knowledgeable or experienced in kintsugi give some tips? I'd appreciate any help and thank you in advance.
- How long have you gone without being in a romantic relationship?
How much time have you spent being single?
If you're currently single: is it by choice or circumstance?
Do you / did you enjoy single life?
What are / were the pros and cons?
Is / was partnership a goal of yours?
If you're currently not single: Did your goals change after getting into a relationship?
What are the pros and cons?
- Which is the best micro sd card company/manufacturer you can recommend ?
I don't care about speed, bigger storage, or small price difference all i want is it to not start corrupting my files randomly, die really fast, be unreliable etc . i just want something to put my files on then delete em and add something else, and forget about it and have it work for atleast 10 years . I don't really transfer a lot of big files so i don't think the memory cycles thing is gonna be a big problem . I used to think sandisk was good as i have an old 7+ year sd which still works without any issue but recently i bought another one which started corrupting my files and stopped working on my device under a year and i'm beginning to think sandisk is not that good anymore so share your experiences and opinions/thoughts etc .
Also i don't know where else to ask or if this is the right /c/ so feel free to let me know and i'll take it down but don't downvote incase i can actually get some answers .
Edit : This is probably a dumb question but does always being in a device reduce lifetime compared to being kept out of devices after putting data in it ? It is designed to be put in devices right so it shouldn't affect it right ?
- Should I avoid or engage in current news right now?
During the last 'election summer' things went haywire but ultimately nothing meaningful really happened, and not a whole lot really changed as a result of that unrest. This time things are going haywire again, and it seems like something big will happen but people thought that the last time... Would it just be better to ignore everything and go work on yourself, your skills, etc. or consume whatever thing is going on? The constant fear that's being pushed is so emotionally exhausting... I'm finding it harder to care about these things without anything major happening, as shitty as that sounds
- question about how to create communities
how do you create a community on Lemmy? I'm not necessarily interested in making one and actively maintaining it but just curious.
- How many communities do you have blocked?
My preferred way to browse here is using All and blocking communities I don't want to see. That way I get exposed to new things I wouldn't seek out on my own (for example: British archaeology)
I accidentally blocked a community while trying to block a user and when I went to unblock it, I saw I had 1250 communities filtered. If I had to guess, 90% are either porn, sports, or anime.
What about you?
- Why do people say 'queer folk' instead of 'queer people'?
I see this phrase used a lot on blahaj lemmy. I’m actually bi but I don’t really like using the word ‘folk’ over ‘people’... it just kinda sounds pretentious, I don't want to be described like a mythical creature
- How to write a professional email in indian english?
I'm a bit lost here. Should I use british conventions? US conventions? Is there indian conventions? Or maybe cultural points I should be aware of?
Google is confusing me more than it is helping me?
Thanks.
- What animals do you dislike for unusual reasons and why?
For me:
-
Monkeys and apes: they look too much like humans and expose many terrible traits of humans.
-
Greyhounds: their thin long body shape look weird to me.

- Was music really better "back in the days"?
Tell me all the trash music/artists you know from around the 50s to 70s.
- Question: where to track podcasts? (and other tracking apps)
I use:
- ListenBrainz for tracking what music I listen
- Letterboxd for tracking what movies I watch
- Serializd for tracking what series I watch
- Bookwyrm.social for tracking what books I read.
Besides logging your behavior these apps also help with recommendations based on other user behavior and reviews.
My question is: is there a platform where I can do this but for podcasts? *
And while we're on the subject: what other apps would you recommend with a similar purpose?
(* I know both ListenBrainz and Last.fm can technically track podcasts, but I'd be more interested in a service dedicated to podcasts specifically.)
- What DNS address do you recommend to replace adguard.dns?
On android, I've had trouble with adguard.dns constantly kicking my phone off my wifi. It did great with blocking ads everywhere, but I'm done with reconnecting so often, and I have less data available on my phone plan these days to fill in.
I'm looking for something I can fill in this spot and it just works
What other addresses have you used that consistently block ads?
