- Will I ever be seen as truly British?
My family immigrated to the UK from Poland when I was six. I'm 20 now, speak much better English than Polish and feel like this is my land/culture. However I have a Polish first and last name, Polish passport and "unique" accent everyone picks up on, so despite this I'm usually perceived as an outsider. It makes me really sad because I don't "belong" in Poland anymore either. Everything seems so complicated especially as I've gotten older with having to get the right documentation for work and opening a bank account and etc also.... Not even sure if I can vote in the next general election even though I feel like I should be able to?
I've had a few nasty instances of being told to go back to my own country, even had a conker thrown at my head while a boy yelled Polski at me in year 11, and tbh even just been seen as a novelty and being asked to say something in Polish has gotten really old. I guess I'm just wondering if I'll ever truly fit in. For some context, I grew up in North England and now live in Wales
- Is there any research on the possible market impact or fund volatility due to generational die offs?
Put another way: What happens to the S&P 500 when the Baby Boomers see a spike in death rates and their estate liquidates their assets?
- If somebody spends the whole day watching fox or religious propaganda, gets worked up and all he can think of is owning a liberal or converting an unbeliever, is this person a victim or just gullible?
Let me explain the question:
If fox news and religious propaganda are exactly that, propaganda, then they are victims.
If, however, every person is free to listen to what they want and then rant against liberals, migrants, Muslims, Arabs, trans, gays, atheists, you name it, then they are just gullible.
I’d have more patience for a victim than a gullible person.
Everybody is free to believe what they want to believe. What I don’t get is why they have to stir things up and why they believe they are the only ones getting it and everyone else is dumb, woke, a communist or is going to hell. Why can’t they keep their opinions to themselves?
- How come liberals dont hate conservatives the way conservatives hate liberals
I constantly see angry mobs of people decrying "woke", "critical race theory", ""grooming"", and whatever other nonsense they made up this week. They march around with guns, constantly appending lib as a prefix to any word they can use to denigrate. They actively plot violence and spew hatred in the open.
You never see the inverse. There is no ConservativesofTiktok getting churches harassed into shutting down for the day or calling in threats. You don't see cringey boomer memes on the left. And whenever I openly express those feelings, try to create that sentiment; I get shut down. Noone agrees, I'm often shamed and muted. I just don't understand why that parity exists, it's extremely isolating to feel so alone in this
- What happens to those who are severely disabled while in prison?
For some reason began going down a rabbit hole thinking about this. Let's say you are blind, and reliant on a guide dog, but end up in prison for a non-violent crime like possession of illegal drugs. Are you allowed to keep the dog? No, right? But if you are entirely reliant on the guide dog to perform daily tasks, how do you manage in prison? What about people who are seriously disabled in other respects, like wheelchair users or those missing limbs, or those with serious mental disabilities? I'm asking for answers both from countries that actually treat prisoners like humans and the US
- Is there a FOSS make-your-own-dictionary app?
Sorry, might not be the right place, but I thought I’d ask.
I’m looking for a FOSS app where you can create your own dictionary: insert words and their meanings, and smoothly sort them in different word classes. I tried out the app Kalimaty, and it’s great, except for the fact it’s subscription-based and does not have many options for the free tier.
If there is no such app like this, is there another way I can make my own dictionary? I have written the words down in my notes but because there are so many it’s hard to keep track of all of them and it slows the Notes app down.
Cheers!
*should mention I am on iPhone.
- How does harddrive failure work when there's multiple partitions?
My laptop's HDD is failing, it shows a bunch of signs such as slow file manipulation and clicking sounds. The Linux btrfs partition keeps going into read-only mode to prevent further damage, makes sense, but the windows partition is working fine (for now).
Shouldn't harddrive failure be evident on all partitions?
- How do people actually dumpster dive to get free food? Are there any other cheap/free ways like this to get food?
My local food bank can only provide 8 packages with referrals every time before you run out, and I have, but my situation hasn't improved financially due to various set backs and I'm struggling to feed myself. I've heard that supermarkets throw out massive amounts, but have never been in a position where dumpster diving seemed feasible. People who do it, what time of day do you do it and how do you find good spots? UK resident for ref
- [Serious] Why do so many people seem to hate veganism?
Seen a lot of posts on Lemmy with vegan-adjacent sentiments but the comments are typically very critical of vegan ideas, even when they don't come from vegans themselves. Why is this topic in particular so polarising on the internet? Especially since unlike politics for example, it seems like people don't really get upset by it IRL
- All cheap smartphones have a fingerprint sensor but all laptops dont have one. Why?
All cheap smartphones have a fingerprint sensor but all laptops dont have one. Is it because of security concerns or spacing reasons?
- what's a good way to stick a laser leveler to the wall?
I have a laser level that I'd like to use for lining up pictures on my wall. I'm doing this by myself otherwise I just have someone else hold it. It has a couple holes in it that look like maybe you could use screws or nails and I'd rather not have to put holes in the wall to do this. Any suggestions?
- Why don't computers have "computer-numbers" equivalent to phone numbers
Why doesn't every computer have 256 char domain name, along with a private key to prove it is the sole owner of the address?
Edits: For those technically inclined: Stuff like DHCP seems unnecessary if every device has a serial number based address that's known not to collide. It seems way more simple and faster than leasing dynamic addresses. On top of that with VOIP I can get phone calls even without cell service, even behind a NAT. Why is the network designed in such a way where that is possible, but I can't buy a static address that will persist across networks endpoint changes (e.g. laptop connecting to a new unconfigured wifi connection) such that I can initiate a connection to my laptop while it is behind a NAT.
- Yes, it would be a privacy nightmare, I want to know why it didnt turn out that way
- When I say phone number, I mean including area/country code
- AFAIK IP addresses (even static public ones) are not equivlent to phone numbers. I don't get a new phone number every time I connect to a new cell tower. Even if a static IP is assigned to a device, my understanding is that connecting the device to a new uncontrolled WiFi, especially a router with a NAT, will make it so that people who try to connect to the static IP will simply fail.
- No, MAC addresses are not equivalent phone numbers. 1. Phone numbers have one unique owner, MAC addresses can have many owners because they can be changed at any time to any thing on most laptops. 2. A message can't be sent directly to a MAC address in the same way as a phone number
- Yes, IMEI is unique, but my laptop doesn't have one and even if it did its not the same as an eSim or sim card. We can send a message to an activated Sim, we can't send a message to an IMEI or serial number
- I have amblyopia. Is this accurate?
I have amblyopia—also known as lazy eye—which means I often see a bit of double vision—usually a sliver duplicated on the outside side of one of my eyes, even when I’m wearing contacts, and even though I don’t look like I have a lazy eye. My eyes definitely don’t work in concert and I’m told my 3D vision resembles what people see when they look at a postcard.
Finally, when I use binoculars, I use only one eyehole up to the non-lazy eye… So I’m wondering what exactly you normal people see out of binoculars? Is it like Looney Tunes?
- In Air Conditioners, what are EERs and how can I use it to calculate my electricity costs.
On non-Inverter ACs, I only need to use the power input (e.g. 800W) to calculate my energy cost for a 12-hour usage. (800*12/1000 = 9.6kW-hr)
On Inverter ACs though, I know they don't operate at 100% all the time, and most of the time the only information I get is their cooling capacity (e.g. 1hp ≈ 746W) and their EER (e.g. 12.2 kJ/hW).
How do I use these to get a rough estimate of the energy cost?
- How do passkeys work across devices?
Let's start with a smartphone. A user creates an account with a passkey for a service, that passkey gets stored on their smartphone, and they can use biometrics to sign in from then on. The private key is stored on the smartphone. Great.
But then how do you sign into that same service from a different device?
If it's by using a password manager, some third party piece of software, How do you sign in on a device where you're not allowed to install third party software?
- [Serious] What is project 2025? What kind of risk is involved?
I'm Canadian and we have our own issues with far right nutjobs but I've heard the phrase "Project 2025" thrown around and the little I've seen about it frightens me. I don't follow the news for the sake my mental health but could someone explain it in depth? What kind of a shit show are we looking at? Unfortunately Canadian politics would probably follow because of the huge cultural influence the US has.
- [Serious] Do you know of any processed snack foods with some vitamins?
Trying to keep my very picky eater 3yo healthy as we're (hopefully) expanding his diet. Right now the only foods I can get him to actually eat are McDonald's, a specific brand of yogurt, banana bread, some crackers and some bars. Refuses any beverage besides water. (He's likely on the spectrum.)
- [Serious] Any high-quality right-wing media, books, explainers?
I know Lemmy isn't normally the best place to search for this, but are there any high-quality right-wing explainers, or modern books, or media outlets?
I myself am ultra-left (quite literally communist, to the dictionary sense of the word), but I'd like to quit the bubble that inevitably forms around and look at good arguments of the opposing side, if there are any.
Is there anything in there beyond temporarily embarrassed millionaires and fears that trans people will destroy humanity? Is there rational analysis, something closer to academic research, behind modern ideas of laissez-faire capitalism and/or political conservatism?
I've tried outlets like PragerU, but they are so basic they seem to target a very uncritical audience.
I'd like to see the world in the eyes of an enlightened right-winger, and see where they possibly fail (or if suddenly they have valid arguments).
- Why can't people make ai's by making a neuron sim and then scaling it up with a supercomputer to the point where it has a humans number of neurons and then raise it like a human?
I know current learning models work a little like neurons but why not just make a sim that works exactly like how we understand neurons work
- Does color change how hot a laser can get something?
For convenience sake let's say you have 2 identical lasers, one is blue and one is red. And you shine it on lead (so none of the light leaks through) until the lead doesn't heat up anymore. Would the temperature change at all between the different color lasers. It doesn't have to be red or blue, it could be microwave or x ray, just different colors is nessisary.
- What is the Anti Commercial-Al license and why do people keep adding it to their comments?
I know what the Creative Commons is but not this new thing or why it keeps popping up in comments on Lemmy
- Is there a way to post video on Lemmy?
When I try to post, it uploads and generates a link but it doesn't show up in the post. Is this a platform limitation?
- If you take care of your parents or other elderly, how are you preparing to age gracefully?
Experiencing firsthand how difficult an aging alcoholic, quadriplegic, post stroke, narcissistic, demented or simply ‘nothing’s wrong with me, I can drive, I don’t need those meds, I don’t need to go to a nursing facility’ kinda parent surely gives you some insight on what to do, what not to do and how to prepare for our own aging and eventual demise.
How do you plan to age gracefully and what advice do you have for us all?
- What are these "bass" and "treble" that I see in an equalizer ?
I am not an audio person, so do not have much idea about technical terms - but I hear the words "bass" and "treble" almost everywhere now, especially in the equalizer app that came with a new bluetooth earbuds that I bought (yes, I am still very much a wired-earbud guy, just dipping my toes in the wireless earbud ocean).
So what do these "bass" and "treble" mean? I guess I hear the sounds to be different when I monkey around with the equalizer. The sound is slightly deep/full for "bass" and less so for "treble".
Is that all?
- Is there a "canvas" of the universe? Do we even know? Would a canvas follow the same laws as the paint?
Think of the universe as a painting. There's the image made in paint, and the surface it was painted on. The canvas.
The stars, the planets, the gasses, the matter and energy and even the space between are the paint. What's the canvas? Is there a canvas? Would the canvas follow the same rules as the paint?
- My friend's boyfriend's therapist said that he is an abuser who is trying to look like the victim. What does this mean?
My friend has been talking with this 24 year old man online since early 2022. She is into stereotypical nerds that are on the chubbier sides. He is a stereotypical nerd both inside and out, and is 350 lbs at 5"11. She thinks he's the cutest man she's ever seen. She met him on Reddit, he lives in California while she lives in England.
Early on he was very much into her. He kept complimenting her photos over and over, and would say things like "oh no..I scared you off didn't I? Sorry.." if she was away from the keyboard for a few minutes. He'd also send her selfies where he's carrying an invisible person over his shoulder, and then he asked her to imagine herself being carried by him. They voice chatted on Discord and had a lot of laughs, but over time he seemed to get less interested. He explained to her it's because when they first started talking, he was working part time, but now he's working from 5 AM every day along with classes until 10 pm some days so he's tired and burned out. In his recent selfies he has black bags under his eyes and isn't smiling. She said he hasn't smiled in his selfies for a long time. He used to talk with her every day, but some days he doesn't send any messages at all. When he does, he tells her he's sorry for not responding, he's been tired from work. He's made "I'll be free when I'm dead" comments lately. This made her believe he could be depressed due to burnout.
Recently, he admitted she lives too far away after she bit the bullet and asked him if he'd be interested in meeting up sometime, and she cannot travel due to a medical condition. He said "I think we're fine the way we are". He said it's "not all that likely" that he'll meet up with her in the future, since he's not a fan of travel in general and the distance seems too much right now. She's still very upset and feels empty because of this but they're still friends and have been talking since. Something I found out is that he's had two girlfriends in the past, and he said both of them were abusive, but also that his therapist thinks he's the abuser trying to play the victim.
She also told me that there's been two occasions where he punched other men. On the first occasion, he hit a man who was trying to leave a party with a half-conscious, visibly drunk girl. On the other occasion, it was because he embarrassed a gang member who was trying to mess with him. He showed my friend a photo of his two fingertips which are permanently bent because of his punching.
He has almost no online presence and made a post 2 years ago (shortly before he messaged my friend on Reddit for the first time) saying he's giving up because he thinks no woman will ever find him attractive or truly love him. He said he's kind of scared of women because of what happened to him before, and he claimed that one of his ex girlfriends tried to shoot him to death, with a bullet just barely grazing past his head.
I'm just trying to get a sense of this. He seems like a shy but gentle nerdy guy who loves collecting action figures and comic books, and I'm not sure how to feel about the other things. I can’t tell if he’s actually bad or not. I can't tell if these are red flags or not.
Are these red flags?
- Why are male social workers so different?
Been homeless over 6 years. My social services agency, high turnover. Being female , almost all my case managers have been female, standard practice.
Out of 17 case managers, only 2 have been male. Female cms: detailed, logical, responsive, solution oriented, clear effective communication. Male cms, the opposite.
I try to communicate clearly, effectively, which is easy cuz autism, and the 2 male cms, i get constant 2nd guessing, passive-aggressive defensiveness. Get impression they're automatically assuming I don't think clearly, don't know what I'm saying. It's weird, and I can't figure out why.
I know not all men are the same. I'm not like all women. Have I just been unlucky with these 2 cms, or is there a gender aspect to this I'm not understanding? I'd like to learn.
- Republicans / conservatives are winning the immigration and values game. Am I misguided? (read post)
This post may be all over the place with 3 ideas that might be unconnected. You be the judge:
-
Odds are stacked against progressives in the US and in the rest of the developed world: We got the elites of the poor world migrating to the rich world, where they buy property, residency and voting rights, but they don't turn progressive. Why would they? They've always been conservative, it’s always worked for them. The poor ones are refused entry, die trying or become the new underclass in the rich world, working for their new owners who pat them and call them good workers, because they have no recourse and cannot change nothing because they have no voting rights.
-
Mail brides chosen by an American or Western bachelor, rejected by local women for being ignorant and uneducated, are chosen for being feminine, submissive and traditional, perpetuating conservatism. Suddenly our bachelor has a woman who will cook and do the laundry and won’t question him. Our character doesn’t have to try to mold his views anymore to meet a partner, he has imported a yes maid. He will raise their children accordingly. And for the mail bride, this is the normal state of affairs since she was small. Why would she even think about changing?
-
Add to that the working class conservatives, proud of not being like ‘those odd and strange looking progressives and feminists. Heck, I’m better than them because I’m not like them, don’t matter I work 50 hours a week and I’m not in an union. I'm not a lazy blob like them’ These working conservatives don’t care about public transport, a public healthcare option, unions, expanded medicaid, access to abortion and family planning or public sex education, things that would lower their premiums and avoid unwanted pregnancies. All that matters to them is being perceived as better than the groups I mentioned before. I don’t understand how this can be so powerful, but so many people believe it and vote accordingly. It’s not rational, it is identity, it is tribe.
Republicans are winning this game.
Happy for you to prove me wrong.

- Where can i find an archive/compilation of the self recorded videos of idf soldiers blowing up apartments and mocking children in schools
I remember seeing an archive that was collecting the videos idf soldiers posted of them gleefully mocking children in skits they recorded in their schools, videos of them blowing up apartments, posing with lingerie calling women whores, zip tying journalists and children stripped down to their underwear. I cant seem to find the archive anymore though. Does anyone know which human rights org was archiving these videos or where they can be found?
I dont know what community this would belong in i hope its not a stupid question
- If you or somebody you know ever fell for a romance scam, how did you or the person fall for it?
And when did you / the person you know realize he was scammed?
What tips do you have for people who haven’t lived this, so they don’t fall for it?
How long till they start asking for money?
What sites do scammers use? Can it be a facebook group or is it only limited to dating sites?
- Why can't crybaby shitbag Lemmy users go kill themselves when they massively report?
They should die already, the fuckers.
- Does the MXID in Lemmy's 'Matrix User' field actually show up or get used?
I've always found the
Matrix User
option that Lemmy has quite interesting, but I have noticed that...it does not even show up anywhere? The fact this option exists is cool, but what is the use if it doesn't show up anywhere?
- Doesn't the need for a permit fundamentally contradict the US's ideals of free speech?
I went to some palestine protests a while back, and was talking to my brother about the organizing, when revealed something I found pretty shocking, we (the protesters) had acquired a permit to hold the protest. Apparently this is standard policy across the US.
More recently, my University is also having protests, and in their policy, they also require explicit approval for what they call "expressive activity". I'm pretty sure not having a permit has been used as an excuse to arrest students in some other campuses.
My question is as the title, doesn't this fundamentally contradict the US's ideals of free speech? What kind of right needs an extra permit to exercise it?
When I was talking to my brother, he also expressed a couple more points:
- The city will pretty much grant all permits, so it's more of a polite agreement in most cases
- If we can get a permit (which we did) why shouldn't we?
I'm assuming this is because of legal reasons, they pretty much have to grant all permits.
Except I think this makes it all worse. If the government grants almost all permits, then the few rare times it doesn't:
- The protest is instantly de-legitimized due to not having a permit
- There's little legal precedent for the protesters to challenge this
And then of course there's the usual slippery slope argument. You're giving the government a tool they could expand later to oppress you further. Maybe they start with the groups most people don't like and go up from there.
