I wanted to buy something second-hand. Unfortunately, Facebook Marketplace is the shit where I live. So I thought I could quickly register, contact the seller, and delete my account afterwards.

For years people have given me the blinking stare of unbelief when I tell them I've never had a Facebook. Now being absent on that platform and others is seen as suspicious. I got a buddy who couldn't complete a job application because Facebook was a mandatory field in the electronic form. The border Gestapo and the State Department require your socials for visa applications. A friend told me that she wouldn't date a guy without socials because she browses them as a kind of background check.

Most of those are indeed bullshit since authorities have better platforms and businesses don't need to know your private info.

Nope. Managed to stay off of it for my entire life so far. Reason for it was that back in '05 or a bit later one of the very first things I learned about the nascent Facebook, was Zuck's famous "Dumb fucks" remark about his early users. I rightfully concluded that someone with such a mindset would be an absolutely plague on mankind and I would never willingly help them in any way, no matter how insignificant.
I had one many years ago because my wife talked me i to it and 'deleted' it due to not using it after a couple years because it was showing me other things than just my contacts even back then. It was mostly a way to see my hogh school acquaintences and childhood friends who moved far away were still alive.
The superficial connections were fine, but not engaging like nearby friends. I have one friend who does post there and sometimes forgets to put it elsewhere, but my wife lets me know when he does.
Note: I put 'deleted' because there is zero chance they deleted anything other than the ability to log in.

I made an account over decade ago, never really used it even back then because I was suspicious even then. Then i tried logging in years after that and they demanded passport or some other identification to even let me log in.
So i sent them a picture i drew myself, i would post it here but i dont think i have the file anymore. It was basically like a mockup passport with picture of a clown and a stamp with picture of middle finger. I hoped they would just ban my account or something since that is about best I can hope. They would never abide by gdpr request and even if they say they did there is no way to know if they actually did.
I'm in the same boat. I have leftover PC parts to offload and Craigslist is shit and the Nextdoor app doesn't have as much reach from what I can see.

I'd kind of think it would be in their interest to, not because they give a shit about what their end users think, but what their customers (advertisers) think. I'd imagine that advertisers are paying x amount to reach real humans that can spend money, so if it turns out that businesses are paying to advertise to bots then I can't see them being too happy about that. Not unless they're upfront with businesses and they tell them that x% of their user base is bots and they'll only charge them to advertise to real people.

Just want to add my two cents.
Lots of people are talking about how they resent that Marketplace has become the place to sell. I get that.
However, this is more of the same in an ongoing evolution of online ads & classifieds.
Originally eBay was King. Craigslist was kind of under the radar and not enough of a threat that they did anything about it.
Then all kinds of little online competitors to eBay started to pop up and they were becoming reasonably successful.
eBay then acquired PayPal so they could squash up startups. It worked. They no longer own PayPal but things change.
Kijiji popped up and was eating eBay's lunch on a local level. Instead of competing, eBay spun off local classifieds to another company which acquired Kijiji.
I don't even know all the back and forth wranglings, but it's all a giant multi-corporate game that's been played for 30 years.
Then all kinds of different "out of the box" storefronts started to appear.
Now Meta got in the game and they are keeping eBay and Kijiji "honest". They've gone ahead and integrated it with Messenger and other apps so you never have to leave their ecosystem.
It literally took 30 years, but I am finally content as both a buyer and a heavy seller, with all of the online options available. I no longer feel like they are trying to wrangle every penny out of me as of seller, and they let me voluntarily pay to promote my sales in MY terms.
That said, I'm not sure how I feel about needing so much information about people just to make an account.
On one hand (I'm very biased towards the seller's perspective) I can actually see the need to apply as much verification as possible for new accounts. It's been a severe deficiency in their product for years and years and years. And as a seller, I am exhausted with bots and fake accounts and people who want to hide in the shadows, there's no reason to do that when you're buying a vacuum off me and want to come to my home to pick it up.
On the other hand, I made my account years ago so I'm not subject to this requirement. But if I put myself in the shoes of somebody making a new account today. Holy fuck would I not be impressed with this.
I really don't know what the answer is. I would never upload ID or a video of my face to them. I don't know what's needed here.

I would not accuse you of such, but every action to verify someone's "personhood" means that marketing types have that much more access to try to sell me junk.

I moderate a few groups on Facebook, and every account I see for new members that was created within the last few years is a spammer. The people who wanted Facebook accounts already have them. Very very few actual human beings are signing up for new legitimate accounts at this point.
Facebook should just close the new account option. They're working toward AIs talking to each other and won't need human interaction any more anyway.

Are there any fediversians out there familiar with friendica? From what I can tell, it looks like a FOSS equivalent to Facebook. I was never really into Facebook or Instagram, so on the surface it seems to tick the boxes, but I appreciate they have addiction tier levels of interaction with the majority of people around me, so differences will be glaring for hardcore users.

afaik Friendica is the closest to Facebook usage among Fediverse platforms, im not aware of new features on Facebook since I quit it a few years ago but for ordinary people i only think to be missing games i know some people used (do they still?) to play to get "achievements" which they could share they got it, i'd usually see it more often from farming or guitar hero-like games, other than that they have plenty of stuff that you won't find in other Fediverse platforms but its also not a platform where you'll find general instances with as many people as in Lemmy/Mastodon/Pixelfed general instances but since you are willing to host for yourself and your friends it might be worth it, you can even have your own RSS feeds within Friendica and browse posts from other platforms outside the Fediverse, you can check the features list on friendi.ca/about/features

Technically, my account is still "under review", for the past 8 years.
I used this name, Mystik Incarnate, because, believe it or not, there are more people who know me by this name, compared to how many know me by my legal name.
I remember that Facebook challenged my name back in the day, like 10+ years ago. I took a form of ID and made it say "Mystik Incarnate" as my name, sent that in, and they unblocked my account for a while. A few years later and they did it again. By then, I was already on the fence whether or not I wanted to maintain a Facebook account... But I submitted basically the same thing and..... Well... It's still "being reviewed".
I do have an account under my legal name, mainly as a collector of messages for people that know me professionally or something that are trying to reach out. I check it every few months at most; but that account has no friends, no connections, nothing. I only keep it so people can message me. I don't use their apps or anything, I only log in on the website and usually incognito so that they can't track me across the web.
Every time I see someone's logged in Facebook account, I'm disgusted by how cancerous it has become. Anyone who reaches out to me on that platform I usually try to have them connect with me by email, or some other chat program that's more trustworthy.

I used to do gig work online. Everything was fine for two years, then they suddenly required the same shit for identity verification, so I quit.
Sadly it does seem to be very popular but I am sure there are some niche forums specific for certain items like tech related ones which also has a marketplace for tech products, audiophile ones for audio gear etc. I joined one to buy something and ended up being a part of the great community now so hopefully something works out for you as well.

I needed to make an account recently, if you make it via a proper computer you get this and it sends it as an "appeal".. Which means they werent clever enough to separate new account creation from actual appeals. So of course what happens is it goes to some call center in some poor part of the world where they're not smart enough to know the difference or dont care, they hit deny and you get perma banned.
This is not the same if you sign up via an app, which is amazingly stupid but whatever.

I think it's a good way to remind you right up front when you sign up that this is what you're signing up for. Honestly if last week I had been asked to choose between a world in which facebook makes its invasiveness painfully clear at signup vs keeps it low-key, I would choose the former.

Nextdoor is the place I buy / sell secondhand goods. I signed up years ago, but the way they verified you then was you gave an address and they mailed you a post card. It is still a hassle, but imo it keeps the bots out which is nice. A lot less scammers on there.
Cant seem to see this as a bad feature. Accounts on the internet are way too anonymous and bots are swarming every social media

Still though, with the whole damn world going online, in places where anonymity is never expected in the first place, I can see the benefit. I used Facebook marketplace once just to be ripped off.
My daughter uses an anonymous Facebook account with the name of a cartoon character, she’d just close the account if they pushed her though.

Sorry to break this to you, but the people writing bots can also get over this barrier very easily - see that link to the faceswap in this thread? That makes it possible for every person with a bit of tech understanding or at least a bit of persistence to ignore this. it's not even a speed bump for people whose job (yes, job) it is to write bots.
This does nothing to make the bots go away, but it gives Meta a full facescan, which is the fucking last thing to hand over to anyone - a data breach at Meta would mean that everyone around you will get scammed by videocallers with your face; not even your bank manager would be able to detect that something is off if he knows you personally (a short phone call with you to get a voice snippet makes the illusion perfect!)
The political shenanigans in the US are also a reason to NOT give facescans out to anyone.
The solution to bots does not lie in giving up your anonymity. There are no shortcuts here that don't do more harm than good.

Can't really be a bit of both because they can't confirm shit if they don't know what you look like in the first place. It could be to confirm that you are human (and maybe that you don't already have an account) but they can't confirm your "identity".
