  A few years ago, I got my RPAL because I thought I was going to inherit my dad's rifles. (Turned out that he gave them to my uncle a decade before he died, but oh well.)
  The process was fascinating, because it made me realize just how different the gun laws in Canada are, and how much responsibility is drilled in from the start. It also made me realize that a lot of the recent gun reform bills are unjustified bullshit.
  Anyway, I have the paper and knowledge, but no guns. Don't particularly want them either, although it may become necessary very soon.

  Growing up outside of the US, this behaviour seems completely in line with how the country has always behaved on the international stage, just pointed at one of the "good" countries.

He seems like the natural outcome of a country that has tooted its own horn on the world stage for 80 years, that has glorified its military and its military might, that has waved the phrase "American Exceptionalism" at its own population without irony, and that long mythologized its history. Remember, fascism was popular in the US 90 years ago. The only problem y'all had with the Nazis was that they were German. I mean, if you use Ur-Fascism as a checklist, the USA checks off most of the boxes on a good year.
  You might not be cognizant of that, but many of us living outside your borders very much are.
  I don't like what I see in the mirror most days, either. But I don't get to deny the grey hairs and aging face. I sure as hell don't go out in public shouting to the world "I'm not getting old; this greying, overweight man isn't me!"

Fencible and Militia units were formed in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and the Canadas (upper and lower) from local civilians, who fought in a variety of battles throughout 1812. These civilians were in fact called “Canadians” at the time as well.
  And that’s to say nothing of all of the Native peoples of Upper and Lower Canada who aided in the fight.
  Ultimately the British held command, but many, many Canadians participated and were involved as well.

I am confused by this article.
The headline says they want to change the borders, but I didn't see any details in the article about redrawing the border. They say they're interested in doing so, but there aren't any details. They say that Trump wants control of the Keystone XL pipeline, but the details they give simply say that he wants it built. It's like they shoved all the Canada-US relations stuff into one article, but didn't bother editing it or making it coherent.
On another note, Trump himself is confused:
"We protect Canada, but it’s not fair. It’s not fair that they’re not paying their way, and if they had to pay their way they couldn’t exist,” he told reporters.
Uh, no, Canada has protected our northern border. If we'd had to protect that on our own, we'd be a much more closed, paranoid and militaristic place. [Isn't that a scary thought!]

The idea that any military attack on Canada is most likely to come from directly across the southern border is not a new one. It's one of the main reasons we need an army at all. Many years ago I mentioned this theory to some people in the military and was slightly surprised that they all took it seriously and said yeah, we do have plans for that possibility of course. I don't know to what extent they were serious about it then or whether they've all gone soft and forgotten about it in the decades that have since passed, but unlikely as we thought it that an invasion would come from the USA it's even more unlikely that it'd come from anywhere else.
- We certainly had plans for it when I was an infantry officer in the nineties. I see no reason why those plans would not have been kept current.

- I don't believe it's most. If you add those who support Trump to those who are too indifferent to bother to vote against him, the people who will oppose him are in a minority. And even some of that minority is "don't rock the boat" Democrats who will go along with the status quo, even as it lurches to the right. Others are scared and won't do anything to help. Trump's favorability rating bumps along at around 45-52% these days, and Americans have a strong tendency to rally behind the troops and the President even in needless and cruel wars, and they're suckers for propaganda. So I don't believe a majority are on Canada's side in any meaningful way. Americans will fall in line, and Canada has to defend itself against this aggression.
- I wouldn't count on it. Americans want to seem strong but are really just weak babies. Most well just go along well saying I need my guns for government overreach well just allowing it to happen.
