  • You must know nothing about owning a home if you think rent just goes straight into a landlord's pocket.

Is the landlord making a profit? That comes from rent going into their pockets.

that doesn't mean paying for it is a scam.

Choosing to pay for it, sure. Most renters would rather own but can't because landlords have bought up a limited supply of a resource in order to profit off it. When scalpers do that they get vilified, but do that with something necessary for survival and for some reason it becomes an investment?

"People with more money than sense would rather pay someone else to do it" is not a good argument for forcing everyone else to also pay someone else to do it.

  • Right to Flex Arms
  • Are you guys so fragile in your beliefs that you can't even handle a simple suggestion of a benefit to an opposing view?

What was the benefit again? Normalizing doing it is not a benefit on its own.

"Can someone explain the benefit of wearing your underwear on the outside of your pants?"

"To normalize wearing your underwear on the outside of your pants"

So it's just a fashion statement then?

When someone asks "seriously, what is the argument for doing this, what is the benefit?" A response that exists solely of "to get other people to do it too" does not answer the question as to why that is desirable.

If we move the theoretical out of fashion and into safety, such as someone complaining about people insisting on lying face down in the middle of the street, a response of "they do this to normalize people lying face down in the middle of the street" should not be received well. All it's doing is advocating for making people less safe with zero justification as to why.

  • You'd be surprised how much technology certain Amish communities use. They'll have machines that operate on water instead of electricity.

  • At some point in the future there will be a movement to completely drop all computer technology for privacy reasons
  • Someone who has reached the point of abandoning all computer technology entirely would probably be willing to make the effort of installing a friendly Linux build. It's not as complicated as people think.

  • Good old Lemmy, where providing a different perspective gets you downvoted to hell simply because it's not the popular view.

You mean the view "let's normalize making life more dangerous for no reason?"

  • Right to Flex Arms
  • Main goal is to normalize it.

It's also a period of US history well known for shootings.

  • what is the police suppose to do?

Start a paper trail. If multiple unconnected bikers report them or they are involved in an accident later it is prior evidence of reckless driving.

Even if he denies it when police show up to ask questions it might scare him enough to stop doing it.

  • None of this is an argument for Homosexuality being wrong or right. If people were saying "she's having sex with women so sex with women must be okay" then it would be a tu quoque fallacy.

People are pointing out that shes a huge fucking hypocrite. Hypocrisy by itself isn't an argument for or against anything, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth calling out.

    People are and have been.

Not because the individual doesn’t actually follow it

When the individual is ignoring any arguments on the basis of an Appeal to Authority "Everyone knows this is wrong" then it's valid to point out "Then why are you doing it?"

  • Her entire argument is an appeal to morality. "Gay is bad because it's immoral." So when she is then engaging in this 'immoral' activity it is relevant: "Even you don't believe it's actually immoral, which is your entire argument."

Ublock origin blocking images only from a specific instance

    This is a weird one.

I am subscribed to Risa@startrek.website When browsing on my phone I can see the thumbnails just fine. When browsing on my desktop ublock origin blocks the thumbnails and avatars, but only from the startrek.website instance, and only when I'm accessing it through Lemmy.ca

If I go directly to startrek.website I can view everything fine, and other instances I am not encountering this issue with. Any idea what might be the cause? I am using Firefox.

    Is there an r/all equivalent?

I can go to the main page of a Lemmy instance and see whatever is active on that instance at the time, but is there a way to get something like r/all for all federated instances?
