Back when I was on reddit, in 2019, I tried so hard to bring attention to an (at the time) new bill that was being voted on. Net neutrality had just been killed officially, and then they passed a new bill. This bill said that companies can take their data they have about you, and the profile they've built on you, and sell a copy of that information to anyone they want without consulting the user. I was outraged at that.
And nobody listened. I'm not saying that this hack was legal, but whomever has that info now can freely and legally sell that info. And the people who buy your profile can legally sell your profile. As long as it can't be proven it's stolen data, and even then ticketmaster would have to be the one to press charges. I have a feeling ticketmaster would just settle for some cash payout instead.
And what about you, the user? Where do you stand in all this? It's your data, so what are your recoarse options?

I don't know if whatever he filmed was released in 2001, but he definately did filming in 2001.
I was 16, and got out of high school. I used to walk 30 streets, because I didn't want to ride the bus packed with kids.
So I'm almost at tower city, about 5 streets away, when everything is blocked off, and a crowd blocking everything. I'm trying to get through, but he's in the alley, that they've since renovated and made a trendy spot, but back then it was just a gross alley. He had his trailer in the alley, filming something on the other side.
I'm trying to get through, and it's just this mob of people, and everytime I say "excuse me" they're like "WHERE ARE YOU TRYING TO GO??? THATS GEORGE CLOONEY!!!" and I do not care. He had been a massive celebrity by this point.
The whole crowd is facing south where Clooney is, and I'm trying to go west. I get like 25% through this crowd, and Clooney points at me, and a minute later these two guards are now trying to get through the crowd trying to stop me. Difference is, I'm a 200lbs high schooler, and these guards are big buff dudes, like 300lbs. So they were having more difficulty getting through than I was.
I give Clooney the finger, because what the fuck, and he sarcastically waves like the queen of england.
Finally I get through to the other side (what should have been a 20 second walk if nobody was there took 15-20 minutes), and now I got Cleveland police on me. They question why I'm trying to attack Clooney, I tell them I don't give a fuck about him. I'm trying to get to tower city to catch the red line. They let me go.
But to think Clooney thinks he's so important that he can just block other people from their daily lives, and try to send cops on you if you're ignoring him.
And ever since then I've had a grudge against him. And yes, I AM attracted to Francine Smith in that 2006 episode of American Dad where she hates him for being (her words) "a self centered smug prick". I said "So THIS is what it's like having a boner for a cartoon character!"
That being said, I still don't see the appeal of those sites that draw cartoon mothers having sex with their cartoon kids......even if you draw them as adults, it's still weird.

I understand that I'm on an island. Lemmy.World is a pretty big island, kinda like Austrailia, but it is still an island.
I can't just go to otherinstance.otherdomain/community and click subscribe. Or comment. Or anything. That instance should know I'm Lost_My_Mind@Lemmy.World just by the fact that I'm still logged into Lemmy.World, even if I'm on Lemmy.ml
So if I go to any other instance, I shouldn't have to do a thing.
As long as I'm not banned from Lemmy.ml, and as long as Lemmy.ml hasn't defederated from Lemmy.World, I should be able to log in on Lemmy.World, travel to Lemmy.ml, and immediately be able to comment, upvote, downvote, subscribe, whatever. And when I do these things, even though I'M on Lemmy.ml, my actions will have come from Lemmy.World
Lemmy/The Fediverse is a great idea. It has a lot of foundationally sound ideas that should be able to continue to thrive for decades. It just needs a userbase.
I remember in 2000 saying the same things about linux......and it never got that userbase until Android took all the techie sound ideas, and put them behind the curtain. When 16 year old blond valley girl Britney uses her Android phone, she doesn't know what a terminal is. She doesn't have to know. She doesn't have to think about it. She just opens her app drawer and plays spotify. And thats it.
I know the concept of a techie platform hiding the techie advancements sounds completely foreign to the idea of someone who spent 3 years learning how to techie, but thats what needs to happen.
Otherwise Britney will get about two sentences into you explaining the fediverse, before her brain turns off.
If Britney can't use it, this will have a userbase to reddit, in the same way that Linux has a userbase compared to Mac/Windows.
Lenny can grow. I feel like the ideas here are built to last. They just need to be more accessable to idiots. I have other issues I feel could be fixed, but I think this one is by far the biggest barrier to entry for most.
