Do you donate money? How, why, why not?
  • I've given money to both charities and people. Here's the thing about donating, though: you'll get on all sorts of mailing lists and shit, and you'll get lots more begging letters, emails, phone calls and texts. You know those PBS/NPR donation drives, where they're like "We just need ten more donors this hour, it doesn't matter how much!" or those charities that send you pre-printed labels and say "Hey, just send us five bucks, that's all we need"? Yeah, they're harvesting your information. If you even send them a penny, they'll be back for more, and they'll sell or trade your information to other charities.

I give money to our local volunteer fire/ems department every year, but I don't use their pre-printed mailer; I hand them cash when Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny come through on their trucks. I have one of those pre-paid Visa gift cards that aren't tied to an actual person; if I do an online donation, I'll use that and give them fake information. The money is legit, the information is good enough to pass, but they can't come harass me for more.

This includes all donations, by the way - political, religious, civic, charity, social, whatever. Do it in cash or by an anonymous Visa gift card.

  • Ceiling lights, LED bulbs or fixtures?
  • It seems like you're leaning toward getting standard light fixtures. Are you looking at the ones with naked bulbs, or those with the glass coverings over the bulbs?

If you're looking at naked bulbs, and if your landlady doesn't already have one, you might also consider getting her a lightbulb-changing kit so she can change any dead bulbs without climbing a ladder. Something like this with an appropriate-length pole.

  • Harris accepts CNN debate invitation for October 23, again challenging Trump to another showdown
  • Her campaign is going to goad him and his handlers are going to have problems keeping him in line. If he shows up to the debate, he's going to be rigidly locked down and determined to hit her on the economy and immigration, and she's going to do her best to needle him.

What I absolutely loathe are the differing standards: to get people to vote for her, she has to be temperate, reasonable, persuasive, and have detailed plans that people agree with. While he just has to show up, word-salad rascist, and not drool too much.

  • Literal meanings of English counties
  • I'd say the bottom four sides are SSW, SSE, ESE, and SSE again. And the North four sides are the big curving bit on the right and then the three flat bits separated by the rivers.

  • Electric Boat Costs 40–50€ to Cross Baltic Sea, vs 750€ Refueling Gas Boat
  • I like the idea of this match, but I'm cautious about the article. All they say about the gas-powered boat is that it's a similar size; they don't mention the actual type of boat the chase boat was, and I didn't see it in a brief skim of the video. I suspect that a notable percentage of the electric boat's efficiency is due to its being a hydrofoil. If the gas boat is the standard hull-in-the-water, it would naturally be less efficient.

  • How would I find my phone if I didn't have a phone to find my phone with?
  • I used my PC to wake up my android phone; there a Google thing that will make it don't for five minutes even if it's on silent. The two times that wasn't easily accessible, I asked someone nearby to call my phone. Once I found it immediately; the other time, I found it later from the "missed call" beep.

  • Cleanup Group Says It's on Track to Eliminate the Great Pacific Garbage Patch
  • The majority of the great Pacific garbage patch material - over 75% of it - comes from fishing and aquaculture activities. I'm sure some of it is accidents or storm related, but I also have a strong suspicion that a good percentage of it is from China's ghost fishing fleets - the ones they deny exist, that over-fish and poach other countries' waters, and that cut loose their nets and pretend innocence it approached.
