You know what the one thing a wheelchair-bound person never needs?
A fucking chair.
- No, you see, it’s not a full chair, just the backrest. Just in case their wheelchair backrest needs to rest.
  
  Oh, and here i was thinking they found a way to cut costs on wheelchairs by removing the backs -- necessitating these backless-wheelchair-accessible-wheelchair-backs for those that need to give their backs a break.
- You know what wheelchair users also sometimes like to do in the middle of a long day?
  Fucking lie down.
- They do, though. Most tables don't sport the room underneath to allow a wheelchair, this if one goes out for dining, one needs to transfer to a regular chair.
  If possible ofc, but it sincerely limits the scope of restaurants you can visit if you can't switch seats.
  
  i always wondered why the arms of wheelchairs weren't adjustable/removable. It seems like it would be a smart thing to implement. I can move my office chair arms up and down, forward and backwards, i even have about 30° of rotation available

What exactly does that back part do for someone sitting on a chair?

- It might prevent some asshole from walking up behind them and just start wheeling them somewhere.
  
  That's also what brakes are for. But in case a human going with the person in a wheelchair wants/ has to push the wheelchair this also makes it so much more difficult to get in/out of.
A wheelchair's backrest does not have zero depth, so with this design the rollchair user has to sit slightly in front of the people on the left and right. Utter shit.

  You could probably just get away with the “no” over the home. “You have no home”, “this is not your home” simultaneously.

- I've seen no camping signs with a tent crossed out and of course no loitering signs are a classic excuse to harass homeless people
This will be very helpful for all the backless wheelchair users.

This feels like a disguised way to not let people sleep on the bench.

- Interesting strategy if that was the point of it, considering the wholly intact bench in the background of the photo.
Yeah, it's possible/probable that it was a dick move by some planning committee. But if I were wheelchair bound, I could imagine that being a) acknowledged and b) in the middle --- instead of always off to the side --- could be nice.
- How many wheelchair users have backless chairs? Like, this isn't even a good design if it WAS actually intended for them. With that back part any wheelchair user would end up sitting slightly forward from the people sitting on the actual bench seat, possibly a good 6+ inches forward if it bumps into the handles on the back.
Hostile architecture
this is what we call, excessively stupid design.
It could be both disability accessible, and just, a fucking bench, because benches have always been accessibility enabled, because they're fucking benches.

Just freaking make single chairs. Stop making weird benches. If you want a bench, make a bench. Someone might lay on it. If you don't want a bench, Christ on a cracker, don't make a weird bench! Just make chairs!

If you want to include them, they can also sit across from the bench.... Or next to it
So, I like the idea of trying to make wheel chair users be included, I do, but this doesn't actually do anything for them. If it had a little table or something similar then at least they could argue that it might help them despite being obvious hostile design. But no. It's just ✨accessible✨.

The bench in the background isn't like that. You would think it they were trying to prevent someone from sleeping there, it would be that way too.

I dunno why y'all WANT park benches to become homeless beds and parks to become encampments. I come from a country with shanty towns that used to be parks and that shit is not the answer. Anyone who feels benches should be for sleeping homeless is free to let them sleep in their yard, or open their homes and let a few crash Inn their living room. But I know they won't.
- I WANT everyone to be taxed to provide basic, ventilated, plumbed, string free shelter for the fellow citizens and human beings we failed the most. Their situation is our national shame and responsibility, same with our largest on earth prison population, and not even per capita. That's on all of us, despite the fact most of us shitbag twist it into being their faults when it isn't a problem in the developed world that cares about what matters like quality education, actual rehabilitation, and mental Healthcare for all.
  Not letting them sleep in my bed is not the same thing as someone bitching about human beings dying of exposure and police harassment in our name despite our gold plated shithole's self-bragging prosperity and generosity because herp derp those PEOPLE threaten my PROPERTY VALUES.
  That kind of thinking is sociopathic. We aren't Haiti, we have resources. We just choose to use them to further enrich the significant capital hoarders and brainstorm new and exciting ways to murder people at scale thousands of miles away. You know, to throw on the pile and sell to other nations. That's the one thing we're good at, mass murder exports.
- Maybe we could use all the time, effort, and money spent on hostile architecture on shelter. Instead we throw resources into park benches that suck at being benches.
  
  This is a nonsense take. We want park benches. We can't just redirect money for park benches to shelter. Cities aren't spending a bunch of money developing these things. Someone already designed it and they just pick it from the available options.
  Besides I'd be willing to bet this is another art instalation, like the other 20 times Lemmy got it's knickers in a twist about a bench.
