- Index of Review Websites / media
Hi Lemmy,
I'd love to make a list/index of good websites for movie / TV reviews and recommendations with all of your help.
I will keep updating the post and add categories
Most of the things that I watch are US content or a derivative and I feel like I'm missing out. On more curated sites like rogerebert.com there are a is a lot of non-US content which I really like.
Are there more sites like Rogerebert? Is there something like an english Cahiers du Cinema? Is there a rotten tomatoes for Asian or European movies?
Maybe the mods can eventually make a nicer post and pin it.

- A moviegoing update
I just watched trailers for Transformers One and the new Crow film on Fandango and was turned off by both of them as I watched them.
Mostly because they were being hyped up as comedies or action films that are just made to sell more tickets whatever they're playing.
I think American cinema has been going downhill for years, but I am curious about trying a movie theater one day to watch something meaningful, and not just spend money on entertainment alone.
I hope I can find something to watch, but what do you guys think?
- Fewer extras on physical releases?
What happened to physical releases? Especially in 4k. It used to be there were all sorts of behind the scenes and commentary and hidden junk. Now it all feels so bare bones.
My most recent disappointment was The Crow 4k. I was hyped to get my steel book in the mail only to have to sit through 14 pages of copyright and piracy warnings, no main menu music at all just a static image and some behind the scenes stuff that was all the same stuff on loop. It was a pretty big letdown. I've had better experiences with pirated DVDs bought at swap meets

- [request] Help finding a space movie
An astronaut crash lands on an elongated asteroid with extremely strong gravity. He manages to crawl away from his ship and finds that the gravity in the middle is normal and the gravity at the far end is reversed. Time is also affected by gravity and goes backward at the far end of the asteroid. His dog was injured and he carries it to the far end to heal it. He then goes back to his ship, manages to fix it, and goes back home. There were trees in the middle with fruit as well. I think that's all I remember. The problem I've been having is if I put 'gravity' and 'movie' in the same search I get Gravity with Sandra Bullock which definitely isn't the right movie. Thanks in advance for any help.

- [request] Help finding a war movie
I'm having trouble finding a movie I caught the ending of on cable TV once upon a time, and never saw again. Does anyone here recognize it?
Modern (~1990s) soldiers (the heroes) are pinned down. They rig explosives for some reason and use the radio to remote detonate them. Something goes wrong, and one of the soldiers takes a walkie talkie and walks towards the explosives, without any cover, to use it to force them to go off. He has to get very close to them. He gets shot repeatedly, and just before being fatally wounded, he yells "Blow!" And the explosives go off.
Additional information:
- On US cable in the mid to late 1990s
- Modern war film, with then-current tech (Desert Storm-era)
- Soldiers are outside in rocky/deserted terrain during the daytime in above the described scene
- walkie-talkie is a military-grade CB brick
- Soldier is a short, young guy who I've seen in a few other movies typecast as a low-ranking soldier or officer of some kind
- [Request] Bleak/desolate/dreary looking movies. Basically where you seldom see the sun shine.
Hi there,
I hope my title as well as the examples shown in the picture get the idea across of what I'm looking for. Doesn't matter what the genre is, I am just looking for movies which are shot in this grim lighting.
Also, for fun, try and guess which movies the pictures come from.

- Reminder that we have a complementary discussion-focused community at !movies@lemm.ee
tl;dr: !movies@lemm.ee is a complementary community mostly focused on discussions rather than news
Hello everyone,
As I did a few weeks ago to share the discussion thread about Dune: Part II, I just wanted to share again about !movies@lemm.ee.
Why another movie community?
There are a few movies communities on Lemmy, be it this one or !moviesandtv@lemm.ee. They are mostly focused on movies news, but don't have much discussion threads about current movies.
On top of that, as Lemmy doesn't have unique URLs for posts, there is no way to just have a megathread pinned with links to discussion threads, as those would only work for people on one instance.
Which is why !movies@lemm.ee was created. Our most successful thread so far was for Dune: Part II (direct link to the thread), and we hope to have other insightful discussions about movies in the future.
Some time ago someone expressed that one of the things they were missing from Reddit was being able to go to a discussion thread after having watch a movie to read other opinions on it, we are trying to fill that gap.
Have a good day.

- does anyone have more insight into ellen Ripley's role as warrant officer on the nostromo in Alien(1979)? Happy Aliens day btw
Update: Answered in the comments much more thoroughly and succinctly than I can summarize, so head below for some great answers.
---
She's apparently the warrant officer, which I've seen hypothetical explanations state is the XO, the second in command, but she explicitly states that she is the third officer at the end of the movie, and throughout The movie she is the pilot and she checks the electrician's work and volunteers to go fight the alien first, and also states that she is in command while the others were off the ship.
So was Kane second in command?
And what is a warrant officer?
Thank you
BTW if there is a crazy Aliens expert, I have a few tiny questions that only a crazy fan who literally read everything ever written and watched every interview about the movie might be able to answer.
