- Please add "bugmen" and "bugman" to the slur filter
They're used as anti-semetic slurs by the far right. There seems to be a proclivity to use the terms as applied to bug-eating politics, but unfortunately the term is simply too associated with anti-semetism and I think particularly given the current conflict it makes good sense to filter it.
- Searching bug
With the top all time option I searched for the word
blocking
in my account in posts - https://hexbear.net/search?q=blocking&type=Posts&listingType=All&creatorId=21005&page=1&sort=TopAllThe search doesn't find this post I made 8 days ago - A question about blocking Youtube's "Don't use an adblocker" nag.
- I am colorblind and can't see hyperlinks
I am red-green colorblind and the particular hue of green used for hyperlinks is basically indistinguishable from regular body text for me.
Is it possible to increase the color contrast between the hyperlink text color and the normal text color, or use some other kind of stylistic signifier for links?
its ok if not lol
- Can we increase the rate limit on images for active users or something?
The 6 image rate limit has just caused me to not bother posting a comment I was trying to make. I did the same 2 days ago when I hit it after putting effort into a comment. There's a tonne of stuff popping off in Israel right now that I could/would have thrown in the news thread but after hitting the limit and realising I've only gotten half of the stuff I needed to upload done it's just a case of "oh i guess I can't post that" and also now can't post anything else without jumping through hoops. Obviously I could jump through hoops but a bunch of Palestinian propaganda content is likely to get removed uploaded anywhere else and hitting this wall just completely demotivates posting entirely.
Like, 10 would be a better limit. I don't think I've ever done anything where I'd hit that. 6 is not enough if it'll be hit every few days and ruin someone's effort.
- What's the best way to post albums of 12-15ish pictures?
I'm unsure what's the limit on pictures per post, my other plan is just use imgur but are there any better options? Thanks in advance
- I can't post to the bloomer comm
I've had to post my daily bloomer threads to c/chapotraphouse because when I try to post them to bloomer I just get the never ending spinning bear.
- Blocked Users Seeing and Interacting with User Posts
Hi there,
I'm not trying to get anyone in trouble, but I've blocked users who I've found annoying (and who find me annoying) and they are still somehow able to see and reply to my comments/posts, which to my understanding should not even be possible. I don't imagine they know they're doing anything wrong by doing that (because they don't know they're blocked) but this definitely seems like a bug.
- I can't logout
No, seriously.
But I also can't seem to stay signed in either, so I guess the issue will resolve itself tomorrow.
More info: I can't logout on desktop or mobile; have tried multiple times.
Insert joke about conscription for the posting wars. Bonus points for working in Russia/Ukraine.
- The default "Active" and "Hot" sort orders are still bad.
The front of "Active" is entirely two-day-old posts with 500 comments by debate bros. "Hot" is just "New."
The old fork had a much better Active sort. If it's not possible for different Lemmys to have different sorts (would is extremely weird, but Lemmy code is weird in general), then it should be upstreamed.
If you're wondering why it's like this, it's two parts:
-
hot_rank is (slightly simplified)
log(upvotes + 3) / (age_in_hours + 2)^1.8
. This means every vote matters less than the last, but every hour costs more than the last. A brand new post with 1 vote is equal to an hour old post with 15 votes. It gets even more stacked when looking at posts with higher vote counts: a new post with 10 votes is equivalent to an hour old post with 120 votes. -
"Active" is just hot_rank but with the post age replaced with the time since the last comment. Every comment "bumps" the post; the age of the post does not matter at all until the two day cutoff is hit. Because hot_rank is overwhelmingly just "new", this is overwhelmingly just "newest comment" with a mild bonus to highly voted posts.
My first suggestion would be restoring the version of the sort from the fork. It worked for years.
Failing that, I would suggest replacing hot_rank with
(upvotes+5)/(age_in_hours+5)
(you can replace the 5s with any small positive number and get similar results). This will fix Hot, and improve Active, but Active will still be a dumpster fire, because the age is time since last comment, which still prioritizes flame wars. I would suggest changing Active entirely to use(comment_count + upvotes + 5)/(age_in_hours +5)
.(PS: I'd go submit a PR but it'd out my real identity and I think it'd get ignored anyway.)

- keep getting 502 and 504 gateway errors
I haven't been able to figure out any rhyme or reason for it, the site just intermittently doesn't load
- A post filter like "All" but excluding "Local"
Sometimes when I run out of local posts, my gut still hungers for slop, but I don't want to sift through posts I already read.
- When did webp profile pictures get disabled?
Until today I had an animated profile picture, changed it for owl appreciation day and now I it won't let me re-use the profile picture I had?
It's even there on the server @ https://hexbear.net/pictrs/image/49d5c974-6784-446d-af10-5c369c7781c7.webp?format=webp
But if I try to add it to my profile picture again, it fails.
If I had been warned about this I would not have ever changed it. Give it back :(
EDIT: Solution - https://hexbear.net/comment/3855898
- Replies not showing up
I'm seeing a recurring issue where I don't have any replies in my inbox, or I have two from fellow hexbears, but then I go to look at a recent comment I'm expecting a liberal to reply to and their reply has been there for some time. It seems the reply inbox is a little inconsistent with federated users maybe?
Anyway thought I'd share that in case it's helpful. I don't /really/ mind not getting dinged with replies from liberals since my comrades are always happy to carry the load.
- I sometimes appear to be logged into some other user's account
it happens when reloading a page or navigating back. it shows me a different user's account in the top bar -- worried that if someone hits stop during page load, they'd actually be able to impersonate another user's account. this appears to be random and I've seen several different accounts over the course of the day.
sorry if this is an already known bug or if it's just a cosmetic issue that doesn't actually give anyone perms.
- I think this user is expressing a sincere gender identity
these comments were removed for transphobia because they're kind of close to attack helicopter ahit but I don't think this is a tranaphobe making a joke, it's just a enby with an unconventional gender identity. it's not up to us to decide thir identity isn't valid. I'm open to having my mind changed - if it's invalidating others' identities somewhere - but absent that I don't think this is transphobia.
- Post "Body" bug.
Over and over again I edited the "body" for this post - https://hexbear.net/post/438570?scrollToComments=false
-
When it was blank - I edited it, clicked save over and over but it stayed blank.
-
Finally I wrote "testing", I clicked save, and "testing" became body.
-
But when I edited "testing" and did the click save dance a couple times - nothing happened. It stayed as "testing".
-
In frustration I reloaded the page - and "body" was my final edit.

- You reply to a comment, you write something, you don't post it but upvote the comment, your text gets deleted and the answer box closed. Can we somehow safe that text please?
- You reply to a comment
- You write something
- You don't post it yet, but upvote the comment at this point
- Your text gets deleted and the answer box closed.
- I can't post a archive.today link in c/chapotraphouse. It never stops loading. I've tried twice now.
Edit: I tried a third time. It didn't work either. It finally worked.
- Just a small thank you to the Hexbear community for helping give me the courage to come out.
I don't think I've ever mentioned this, but you guys were the partly the ones that gave me the strength to come out. It helps that transphobes are rightfully bullied the fuck off of our site. Transphobes are banned fast and I hope that never changes.
That's all. Glad you're here.
- I miss the purpleish theme that we used to have
I don't remember the name of the theme, but I feel like the bisexual color palette matched the logo well and was pleasing to the eye. How difficult would it be to modify it and use it for the newer site?
- "Changes you made may not be saved." bug

My comment appeared in my history.
-
It appeared if I duplicated the tab.

But in the tab I posted it - the comment did not appear and I got the pop up warning. I had to click "Leave" to - um... - leave.

- Idea to alleviate emoji picker lag
Don't start loading it until you type more than 3 or 4 letters after the colon, that way the list shrinks exponentially and the freeze-up is much shorter.
- Gotta say, I love that you can turn off scores now.
I had a lot of anxiety and obsession with getting upbears in posts and comments and felt a weird competitiveness that wasn't healthy. It's nice being able to turn off the number of votes and just engage without trying to literally score points.
Thanks for being less and less like !reddit-logo every day!
- Site is logging me out near continuously on mobile
I use the site through my phone's browser, which is how I've always used it. Recently I'm being logged out almost every time I refresh or go to a new page either by clicking a link or using the back button. Is this a known issue that's being worked out?
- The nesting/indentation in comment threads is incredibly hard to read
The title literally says it all. I'm not sure if anyone else feels the same way but it really bothers me. The problem could be easily fixed by just indenting replies a little bit more. I would contribute this change myself but the last time I did any front-end development I was almost fired from an internship.
- Deleted posts still show
I can see my own deleted posts as well as other people's deleted posts. They are not deleted!
- filtering by local breaks when using web browser back button
firefox 116.0.2
filter feed by local, navigate to any post, browser back button to feed. 'Local' is still selected but page is showing posts from other instances. Can anyone replicate?
- Formatting question
For formatting reasons I intentionally incorrectly wrote the HTML entity
ZeroWidthSpace;
without the&
. If I type the entity correctly - the site strips it out even though it's in code tags.\---
Before today - to use an italic exclamation point (etc) - I've used
ZeroWidthSpace;
. Here's an example...BipartisanshipZeroWidthSpace;*!*
When it was rendered - I got an italic exclamation point at the end.
The problem is that this version of Hexbear strips out the
ZeroWidthSpace;
. So the result is...Bipartisanship*!*
And that's rendered as...
Bipartisanship*!*
- Let us play with our food
Libs are getting banned too fast. They should get a little time to demonstrate whether or not they're here in good faith, and a little time to get dunked on if they're not.
Let us play with our food before we eat it.

- Upvoting bug
I was in my inbox...
-
I wrote out a comment but I didn't click "Reply".
-
I clicked the "upvote" button.
-
My comment was deleted.
Gah.
-
- keep getting logged out
ive seen other users mention this problem. im on iOS 16.3.1 using Safari. it started happening yesterday and got worse today. even refreshing the homepage logs me out
- Posting fails without error messages
I tried to post a thread with only emojis in the title
I tried to post a comment that was too long
In both cases, I clicked to post, and the button changed colour and just stalled. I had to figure out by myself that the problem was the submission was against the requirements; it cost me some minutes of confusion.
- Cache issues of a sort?
So this has been happening since the first lemmy upgrade.
Basically the way I browse Is I go to hexbear, I've got All Comms selected and then hit the dropdown and sort by New. Works fine. Brings up Page 1 of New.
I then click on a post, read it, hit the back button. works fine.
I then click next page and we go to page two. works fine.
I then click on a post, read it, hit the back button. does not work fine. Instead I'm back on page 1 of new, while my url shows page 2 of new. If I refresh it, it brings page 2 back up.
Now, I just did my first step, but accidentally did Old instead of New. I fixed it, but when I went to read a post and backed out, I ended up on old again instead of new. Refreshing brought it back to new.
Do with this information what you will, but since this happens to me on desktop and mobile, I'm guessing I'm not alone.
Also, if we could get the abilities to automatically open external links in new tabs/windows that would be great.
Also, also, !william-van-spronsen still has his first name misspelled. It's Willem.
- Login prompts for 2FA
Since the XSS incident a couple of weeks back, I hadn't been able to log in, or even sign up for a new account. All attempts at either ended with the spinning bear. Now, presumably because of the upgrade, I have been able to create a second account to post this, but I can't log in to my original account, AppelTrad, because it prompts for 2-factor authentication.
This is (partially) my own fault, I suppose, for clicking the checkbox and not mentioning that it didn't actually give me any of the promised results, while I was still logged in; since I was also able to untick the box without being prompted for anything, I just assumed it was a bit of not-yet-implemented UI and that I had reset the option for if it ever became effective, and carried on without any problems until the forced logout.
Since "2FA being broken is a known issue", I'm wondering: is it possible for an admin to reset that field in my database record (or whatever needs to be done to cancel 2FA) without any of the security shenanigans that should accompany working two-factor authentication, so I can successfully log in again? (I have my passwords saved, so it's not just a mistyped password issue.)
- I have deleted at least 10 different comments today.
It wasn't ok to change the position of the reply button as a joke.
