  • Privacy, for one thing. I don't use Google, Bing, Windows, or any Meta software*, and Yandex aren't much different.

Security, though, is another thing. I live in a NATO country, and I would imagine the Russian government are monitoring Yandex (and other RUnet services). Frankly, I think contributing any data to such a government would be against my interests.

There's also a lot of censorship on RUnet. Yeah, Google has that too, but Mojeek and Brave Search do not.

TL;DR: Google is data-hungry and supplies data to the NSA; Yandex is data-hungry and supplies data to the Kremlin; Mojeek and Brave Search are good; DDG and Startpage are the best for the average user.

Since cryptsetup is not going to be at all usable in the initramfs shell any time soon, I've decided instead to just encrypt my /home folder with ecryptfs. The Debian Wiki has an article on how to do this.

[PARTAILLY SOLVED] Installation with disk encryption on RPi 5

    cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ca/post/20291268

I recently acquired a Raspberry Pi 5, but I've been having a lot of difficulty in getting LUKS encryption to work. Has anyone had any luck?

Also, I am using an NVMe drive, so Raspbian is really the only OS that works well. NetBSD can see the disk, too, but I found it annoying to use; and FreeBSD ended up breaking itself. I have not yet tried Armbian.

    > Tech that comes with weak passwords such as “admin” or “12345” will be banned in the UK under new laws dictating that all smart devices must meet minimum security standards. > > Measures to protect consumers from hacking and cyber-attacks come into effect on Monday, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology said. > > It means manufacturers of phones, TVs and smart doorbells, among others, are now legally required to protect internet-connected devices against access by cybercriminals, with users prompted to change any common passwords. > > Brands have to publish contact details so that bugs and issues can be reported, and must be transparent about timings of security updates. > > It is hoped the new measures will help give customers confidence in buying and using products at a time when consumers and businesses have come under attack from hackers at a soaring rate.

    Private Tabs Disabled in Safari

    cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ca/post/19570147

I have noticed a major issue with my iPhone. No matter what I try, I can't open a private tab in Safari. This is not good, as it means I have to manually clear my cookies (which is impractical) or disable them altogether (which breaks some sites).

As of today, I have an adult Apple ID, but my dad is the organiser of the Apple family.

I have tried disabling content restrictions in Screen Time, but it didn't do anything. Web Content is set to "unrestricted".

There is no switch or button in Settings > Safari.

I have no configuration profiles installed that could change this. All I have are a few root certificates, a bunch of fonts, and an APN cert.

Private mode is fully functional in third-party browsers, but they do not support extensions or userscripts and provide marginally worse fingerprinting protection.

    Can anyone help?
