Helldivers 2 community manager says internal discussions are ongoing regarding mandatory PSN account link

I've had my eye on Helldiver's 2, but I'm not creating a PSN account.

I know my $40.00 is pretty important to them, so I thought I would mention it here.

Same. I was thinking about getting it, but the kernel level anti-cheat is a no go, but then I found out on Linux they don't have a kernel-level anti cheat, so then I was thinking about it again. No way they'll ever get me to make a PlayStation account, I left consoles for a reason.

I have a PSN account. I can't ethically support this move that locked so many players out 4 months after buying a game. So I won't be buying until at minimum a solution is in place for all those users, but probably not even then.
- Nobody is locked out. Nothing has as yet changed.
  
  The Steam page has said "PSN account required" since day one. Anyone opposed to creating a PSN account on moral grounds and bought HD2 has no one to blame but themselves.
Was thinking I'd binge this game this winter. Definitely not now lol

Not gonna lie chief, I don't think anyone from SIE is on Lemmy. Like, I agree, but also I think nobody who needs to hear you is listening, not because they're not listening, but because they aren't here to hear you.

Well, they said they would 'discuss' the crappy anticheat too, but so far nothing has been done about that either. I won't hold my breath.

I know little about it. What makes this stand out? I am guessing kernal level, but is there anything else to it?
- Helldivers 2 uses nProtect GameGuard, which is a notorious kernel level anticheat. It is notorious for being problematic to uninstall and causing issues on systems it is installed in (such as straight up preventing some programs from running or causing them to crash and other terrible nonsense that should never happen). Combine that with the fact it's ineffective and the game is PvE, and it's nonsensical why it's around.
- Just search “Sony Rootkit” and it should be more clear why Sony issuing a new kernel level anticheat is not met with warm regards.
- The short version is that the anticheat software is very invasive on the user's system, and it doesn't even work to prevent cheating in the game.

Well they reversed the account linking. I don’t think the anti-cheat had the same backlash though.

They can "talk" all they like. The proof will be non-implementation.

I'm guessing it's them talking with Sony. Sony is the one requiring this, I'm sure the devs hate being forced to destroy the good will of the community.
- Some people are saying they were aware of the requirements before launch and didn't adequately inform customers.
  
  I'm unsure how true that is, but it's huge news if it is true.

People can't just bitch about it on an online forum and then do nothing after that, that doesn't solve anything. You have to be proactive, you have to get off your ass, if you truly want change and to be treated respectfully as a customer. Otherwise, you get what you deserve.

They know the standard M.O. of a gamer, its to complain but then do nothing, and they take advantage of that.

Edit: And I'm talking especially to those who are downvoting my comment. Just bitching and downvoting does't change/fix anything.

- Here's the thing: doing something does not always work, but doing nothing never does.
  In the provided screenshot, the devs themselves explain that asking for refunds and leaving bad reviews is what gives them enough pull to even have the discussion with sony.
  
  Of course you don't have to do anything, but you really don't accomplish anything by bothering the people who actually try to find ways to make the situation better.

I saw this coming a mile away when I first learned it was a GAAS.

I was considering getting this game on playstation at one point but I cannot support this behavior from the publishers.

You already have by buying a PlayStation
Since Sony is publishing this everything you buy for PS is supporting that behaviour.

I remember not wanting to make an account to play Half Life 2 back in the day, yet here we fucking well are...

Were you hoodwinked into buying HL:2 without needing the account at first?
- It's not on the physical box, so yes.
  
  The only bit that said you needed it, appears to be the card included in the box.
How has steam experience been for you? I've been on steam for about 20 years and don't recall they doing anything the likes of Sony doing to their customers.
- It's OK. I do miss the Steam sales actually being worthwhile. They used to be really good, where now I mostly use Steam for games bought elsewhere.
  
  I miss ownership. At least I own my Playstation discs. I can trade them with others when I'm done with them. I can still buy games that have been delisted from digital stores.
