Velvet paintings of anthropomorphic poker-playing dogs. Is this still a part of public consciousness, or is it an extinct meme?

If it's referenced in the early seasons of The Simpsons, it is timeless.

Great for a well placed reference in a show or comic.
20 0 ReplyFallout: New Vegas also had a reference to this in the Old World Blues DLC
7 0 ReplySerious Sam: TSE has a secret with it too, and they are like 10+ years apart.

I have a poster like this, but they are playing magic the gathering.
19 0 Reply17 1 ReplyMy family has had many dogs over the years. I've always wanted to have one of these made with each depicted, but they're playing Uno.
13 0 ReplyThis, along with velvet Elvises (Elvii??) are peak art.
Edit: Autocarrot doesn’t like elvii.
12 0 ReplyThat's because Elvises is correct. And yes, velvet Elvises too.
11 0 ReplyOne Elvis, two Elvīs.
3 0 ReplyUnless they are different Elvises, then it's Elvi. Presley, Costello

As a Latinist, neither do I. It should be third declension, so the plural would be Elvēs.

The background was green though.
11 0 ReplyI'm always hoping to find an old one at a flea market or yard sale. It'd be my most prized possession. Edit: Gen X, just to add context.
11 1 ReplyI'd gladly have it in mine, gen y

Somewhere in storage I have a tapestry of dogs playing pool.
8 0 ReplyYou've reminded me that now I have a man-cave, I want one of those paintings to hang in there.
7 0 ReplyI'm not entirely sure what you're asking, but the game Psychonauts from 2002 has a reference to this kind of thing.
In one of the minds you go into, there are a group of dog characters that represent that person's subconscious psyche. After you finish the level, you can go back and find the character who's mind you're in playing poker with his subconscious dogs. The level is even called Black Velvetopia, and the character is looking for certain playing cards.
7 0 ReplyI'm aware of it.
6 0 ReplyI have a print hanging on my bedroom wall! It’s a very interesting picture.

I remember seeing a reference to this in a Cartoon Network ad - except they had all the famous cartoon dogs like Scooby Doo, Huckleberry Hound, Mutley etc. I always looked forward to that ad as a kid, thought it as pretty cool seeing all my favorite cartoon characters hanging out and stuff.
4 0 ReplyI have very vague recollection of it being relevant...
2 0 ReplyOur neighbor had a carpet depicting dogs playing poker hanging on their wall. Not these exact ones but a different group. That was 30 years ago.
2 0 ReplyYes, for some reason it was always painted/woven in "velvet" of all things, so I can see why people think of it as carpet.

2 0 ReplyNo idea why, but I have always hated this. Anyone else in the same boat?
