Germans getting increasingly critical of Israel, survey says – Middle East Monitor

Germans have an increasingly negative view of Israel 60 years after the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations, said a new survey released by the Bertelsmann Foundation on Friday

The report pointed to a significant change in the mood of Germans towards Israel over the past four years.

Back in 2021, 46% of German citizens surveyed had a positive attitude towards Israel. Meanwhile, only 36% have a positive opinion of Israel, while 38% rate the Jewish state negatively.

The German government has been one of the strongest supporters of Israel but has come under growing public pressure as a result of Israel’s brutal military campaign in Gaza.

  • Pretty sad that it's taken this long and that it seems like the lesson they learnt from WW2 wasn't "the subjugation and cleansing of an entire group of people is bad" but rather "never under any circumstances criticize Israel".

  • And because the German state has conflated anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism so completely, they will zero in on this, further crack down on Muslims and leftists and completely miss actual rising anti-Semitism on the Right, that actually threatens German jews. Worse still, they have created the discursive infrastructure for the anti-Semitic wackos to siphon away more ideologically susceptible people into actual dangerous anti-Semitic organizing and sympathizing. They created the conveyor belt that's rationalizes the "well if it's antisemitic to oppose genocide then I am one too" zero sum game.

In short, the German state killed nuance, and German jews will suffer.

  • The German government would be the last to acknowledge this shift, long after the tide has turned for the vast majority of Germans.
