Somehow the complexity of using Lemmy compared to other social media sites and the decentralized nature of it has really gotten rid of the trollfarms and bot spam to a pretty good extent. I realize now that Reddit has such an insane amount of bad-faith actors that cause the site to be so toxic, same with all other mainstream social media.
I came here with the API changes, but I knew there would be future waves. It’s so nice. I believe in Lemmy and the promise of federated media to help technology work for humans.
I first joined reddit in 2011 and Lemmy definitely reminds me of early reddit. Except back then I probably lurked for about a year before I even made my first comment or post. I joined Lemmy about a month ago and I'm slowly starting to participate already.

It’s just like email. It mostly doesnt matter what instance you choose as you can talk with almost any other instance. There are a couple instances that have been defederated from most other instances, but they are few and far between. Anyway, it’s exactly like email.
Think of an "instance" as a server (or servers) where Lemmy is being hosted. So, lemmy.world is hosted by one entity while lemm.ee is being hosted by another. They just have different servers, but they can interact with each other.
Think of instances like Discord servers. Then each instance has communities that are like Discord channels.
Another way to think of instances is like email providers: you can select Google or @Gmail, Microsoft or @Live, etc. The same is true for the fediverse, where you can make Lemmy.World your "provider" of Lemmy content, etc. Each community in this analogy might be folders or labels you apply to your emails so you can sort them efficiently.
What's cool about the fediverse though is that no matter which instance you sign up to, you can see the content from communities of other instances as well. So if you have an account on Lemmy.World, you can see content from my instance, dbzer0, and all other instances.
Well, sometimes. Each instance allows federated relations in which posts, comments, upvotes, etc. are only shared between other federated instances if both the sending and receiving instances agree to that channel of information flow. If say Lemmy.World doesn't allow that information flow but dbzer0 does, then Lemmy.World won't see any data from dbzer0 while dbzer0 will see all data from Lemmy.World.
Think if someone posts a meme on Lemmy.World, if L.W federates with db0 and vice versa, Lemmings can see comments and upvotes from both servers to that meme post. If L.W. defederates but db0 doesn't, then L.W doesn't see db0 comments/upvotes but db0 sees L.W's and db0's. Also, db0 can respond/upvote L.W. users, but L.W. users won't see that data. Then if both L.W and db0 defederate from each other, neither instance sees content from each other, effectively blocking the entire instances from each other.
Federation is 2-sided. Both parties must agree to information flow in order to interact.
Defederation is 1-sided or 2-sided. If 1-sided, one party sees nothing from the other, while the other party sends data that will never be seen. Kinda pointless! If 2-sided, neither party sees anything and so they don't interact at all.

I think maybe the problem is that places like Reddit were essentially a “third place.” It just happens to be a virtual one. You can’t monetize a place, unless you also provide a good or a service. a restaurant at least provides food and drinks. bowling alleys provide games and food and drink. While the fact that there might be 3+ communities on different instances all covering the same topic is a weak point, it's also a strength in this regard, so it kind of evens out. I posted it to reddit after that, and it hit the front page of r/all. Not to toot my own horn, but that's some good fucking original content that the comic strip sub on Lemmy could have used.
That does suck, it's kinda sad that the most popular Comic-oriented community is that uptight about profanity.
Although, if that happens again I suggest trying on a different community, even if it's not fully comic-oriented or if it's smaller (c/comics@programming.dev for example, it's mostly inactive but it's not uncommon at all for posts from near-dead communities to gain traction anyway).

I tried jumping off after the API removal but Lemmy wasn't as populated back then, and there was no immediate effect to me. More garbage, but I muted several subreddits a day and carried on. Now there are real alternatives.
the ones that are evading with 100s of accts, are there to earn money from reddit. they use paid services, like proxies, anti-detect browsers, ip changes and new devices. i partially applaud them and also try to err on the side of caution, your making things worst for people by creating accs soon after getting banned and commenting so fast, i was saying on that forum that they should chill down thier activities until the purge dies down.
i had 5+accts banned to, was able to evade previous attempts for misconstrued statements, because i was using reddit from a university computer,.
People saw this coming from miles away since the rumors came out of reddit going for an IPO.
Question is why people keep getting outraged?
It's okay to be outraged by outrageous things even if they are obvious.
We were pissed then and we're pissed now. The only difference is there's a real alternative. Lemmy is a lot more polished these days.
people are getting banned sitewide left and right for very little reason, or even if its a semi-legit reason they went after all my accounts(one temp ban was enough to trigger a sitewide ban on all my other accts that are completely seperate from each other), and i wasnt a serial ban evader like the people who have hundreds of accounts. im guessing thats why they are comming here.
Reddit says they care about freedom of speech and liberal views. I realized a long time ago that their view of liberalism is to allow people who follow their narrative and ban people who don’t.

Sub name checks out
It's a real shame. There is a treasure trove of information on there for niche topics, and years of researching problems and questions etc. It really sucks that it's gotten to this point.
Since ~2014 I would search reddit before google for information. I'm sure as traffic picks up here it will become a better source.
I've only been here a couple weeks myself and the amount of new users has skyrocketed in the last week from what ive seen.
I do miss some of the niche subs over there , some of them are here too but not nearly as much engagement...yet

the niche subs are going to suffer, im guessing they can still go to other forums. medical and military (joining) sitll have very established forums out there. not so much for other subs.

Have you all read 1984? First they will make thing illegal. Then they will hide away what is illegal. After that someone will learn something was illegal. Once they are found out, that illegal thing will be completely changed so there is no evidence anything was illegal to begin with.
I would not be shocked if try to scrub these bans so users can’t see if a community was banned.
Every subreddit that is banned needs to be recreated on Lemmy out of principle. Unless it's gonna get our guy sued.

They have really unleashed the hounds recently it seems. I wonder how long before they start banning NSFW content.
They floated the idea of charging for access to certain subs a while back. They're gonna paywall the porn.

They make too much money from that. The "banning porn" part of Project 2025 was always the least believable.
