  • Lemmy apps that can swipe to next post?

I have been using Eternity mainly because I can swipe between posts in post view. But the development seems to have stopped/slowed down.

I was wondering if there is any other lemmy app with swipe to next post feature available? Thanks in advance

    8
  • Is Alexandrite abandoned?

The GitHub page looks awfully quiet and the website has stopped working for me recently.

I would be really sad as it is the best looking Lemmy web experience imo.

  • [RFC] Thoughts on Combining Comments for Crossposts?

Disclaimer: If this isn't in the spirit of the community, feel free to remove the post and I'll re-post it in my app-specific community. I'm posting it here since it's a feature that I'm thinking through that may eventually make it into the Lemmy app I develop, and the people here would probably have good ideas/opinions on the matter. Plus, other apps may have already implemented this, and someone may helpfully point that out.

With that out of the way, I'm looking to get some feedback on whether this is a good idea or something that only sounds like a good idea.

Basically, when a post has crossposts, my idea is to fetch the comments for the other cross posts and merge them all into one big comment tree. Regardless of which cross-post you land on, you'll see the same comments.

    • If you reply to the post (top-level comment), it'll post to whichever cross post you're currently on.
    • If you reply to an existing comment, it'll go to whatever post that comment was posted to.

The goal is to bring some unity to disparate communities that have a lot of crossover content.

Is this a good idea? Dumb idea? Can anyone think of any gotchas that might crop up? If I do implement this, it will be something the user can turn on/off.

    Potential issues:

    • Culture clash between different communities
    • Mods of one community would not be able to mod every item shown
    • ???

    Thoughts?

  • Tesseract 1.3.0 "Defiant" Released 🎉🎉🎉

    cross-posted from: https://dubvee.org/post/1130768

Finally releasing 1.3.0. I didn't quite rip it down to the studs, but it was damn close. Much of the UI has been re-written as well as a lot of the underpinning helper functions. There's a lot of changes, though most are just enhancements and polish to things that already existed in 1.2.9.

Screenshot description: Logged into my Lemmy World account, browsing communities hosted at programming.dev, and the community list is shown. Communities on programming.dev I'm already subscribed to are indicated, and the check buttons allow instant subscription to those (even if LW doesn't yet know about them). Also shown is an instance selector dropdown featuring my home instance as well as instances set by the admin to appear there. At the bottom of that dropdown is a field where I can enter the domain of any Lemmy instance to browse.

The full changelog is a beast, so I'll only post the highlights here:

    Highlights for 1.3.0

    API Compatibility

1.3.0 "Defiant" remains fully compatible with both 0.18.x and 0.19.x. This will be the last version to support 0.18.x. Once development of 1.4.0 begins, the minimum supported API version will be 0.19.3.

    0.19.x Features Supported

0.19 has had basic support (mostly auth) since 0.19.0 was released. In addition, 1.3.0 now offers a few more features that become available when connecting to an 0.19.x instance:

    • Scaled sort becomes available
    • Instance block becomes available
    • Instance blocks are managable through your Profile->Blocks page.
    • Cursor-based pagination is used if available but falls back to offset-based for 0.18.x
    • [New] Fixed bug where admin state is not detected when connected to 0.19.x instances. If you've been using Tesseract on 0.19 and didn't realize it has admin capabilities: surprise! It totally does and has. This bug just caused it to not detect you were an admin and hid them from you. See: https://dubvee.org/post/1148802

    General

    • Whole UI has been polished. See the changelog for the full list of changes since 1.2.9
    • Removed markdown-it and all of its plugins as it was too cumbersome to extend to do some things I wanted to do and replaced it with svelte-plugin-marked. Wrote custom renderers to replicate the functionality of markdown-it-html5-embed and spoilers.
    • New community moderation capabilities (directly ban/unban users, localized modlog with quick actions)
    • Sidebar fonts are now more compact
    • Long community names are intelligently shortened where needed
    • You can now select one of several fonts to use for the UI. The default font is now Roboto.
    • New notification widget
    • Option to hide those obnoxious "anti AI" CC licenses people put on their posts/comments that they somehow think will prevent LLMs from training on their submissions. 🙄
    • Posts with URLs will now have an [Archive Link] next to them which will automatically search archive.ph for that URL. Please stop commenting "Paywalled" when someone posts an article.
    • "Copy Lemmyverse Link" added to user profile menus
    • Can now change password without having to go through "forgot password" process (I swear I thought I already implemented this, but I guess it never got merged in. Oops)
    • Action bar for posts/comments is now reversible. Primarily intended for mobile when you want the vote buttons to be on the right-hand side.
    • Bugfixes: too many to list

    Search

This deserves its own section since the search was completely revamped.

    • Search filters cleaned up and polished
    • Can now search from community or user pages which will automatically filter the search to just that community/user
    • Added a "More from {user}" option to the community menu on posts. This will search for posts/comments by that user in the current community.
    • #Hashtags are now automatically converted to search links

    Remote Instance Community Browser Revamp

    • Can now one-click subscribe to communities on remote instances
    • Your subscription status for communities is now reflected against remote instances
    • Got rid of modal to view community info. Each item is now a collapsible item; expand to see community details.
    • Admins can specify a list of instances that will pre-fill the instance selector for quick browsing. Users can enter any instance they want also.

    /instances Page

Can now view federated instances (allowed, blocked, linked) through Tesseract. Additionally, you can filter by software (Lemmy, Kbin, etc) and keyword as well as hide dead instances.

Each instance also has action buttons to view communities there (Lemmy only), visit the instance, view a Fediseer report for it. Dead instances are also indicated with a "thumbs-down" icon.

Instances are considered "dead" if they haven't been pinged in > 3 days.

    Media

    • Peertube videos now embed seamlessly. You can already follow Peertube channels in Lemmy, and now they'll show as a feed of embeds.
    • Embeds now only render when they're in the viewport. Once an embed is out of the viewport, the iframe is destroyed and removed from the DOM. This saves a LOT of memory.
    • Can enable an option to show alt text as a caption on images in markdown (not post images, but images in the post body and coments).

    Feed & Posts

    • Added buttons on community avatars to quick subscribe/unsubscribe (ok, saw that Photon did that and implemented it almost exactly the same. Sue me).
    • "Explore" menu is now "Instances" menu. Instance-specific options are here such as Fediseer reports, block that instance (0.19+), and browse communities there.
    • Infinite scroll is now the default.

    Post Creation

In addition to the polish and cleanup, the form to create posts has some new features:

    • Can now pull the metadata from the given URL to pre-populate the title and pull a thumbnail for previewing
    • Uploading images can now use the image proxy URL to reduce load on the API server (if media proxy/cache is enabled by admins and users enable it in their settings)
    • Can preview in both card and compact views

    Modlog

Lots of tweaks and polish, now has quick action buttons that can be used to reverse a previous action or take additional actions. You can also easily turn a temp ban into a permaban without the intermediate step of unbanning first.

Features That Did Not Make It Into 1.3.0

There are only two planned features that didn't make the cut:

    Reimplement custom feeds

Since this is the last 0.18.x release, and I'm having to support both cursor and offset-based pagination, I've decided to push the custom feed rewrite to 1.4.0 which is dropping 0.18.x support. That will make implementation easier and cleaner than having to support both methods.

    TOTP 2FA Setup

Same as with the custom feeds, I want to do this cleanly. Since 0.18.5's TOTP setup is bonkers and can easily lead to accounts being locked out, I've decided to skip adding this until 0.19.x is the minimum-supported version. Tesseract supports logging in if your account has 2FA enabled, but you can't manage 2FA settings yet. I may add that in a 1.3.x release and just limit it to 0.19.x instances like I'm doing with the other 0.19 features as long as I can do it cleanly without impacting support for 0.18.x.

    Update

My thanks to @gedaliyah@lemmy.world for pointing out a bug when working reports. Fixes have been pushed out.

    Get Tesseract

    • Changelog: https://github.com/asimons04/tesseract/blob/1.3.0/ChangeLog.md
    • Docker Image (amd64 only): ghcr.io/asimons04/tesseract:1.3.0
    • Github: https://github.com/asimons04/Tesseract/
    • Demo: https://tesseract.dubvee.org
    • Matrix: Support Room

Feel free to play around with the demo instance (it's unlocked and can log into any Lemmy instance), but ideally, you'd host it yourself or ask your instance admins to offer it as an alternate UI.

    Repost Reddit images to Lemmy

Install Reddy on Linux | Flathub

Reddy is an App that lets you repost images from Reddit to Lemmy!

For more information about what is Reddy, find my other post here : https://lemmy.world/post/15020832

For Windows user, you'll need WSL 2 and then install flatpak and then install the Reddy flatpak.

Feel free to give me feedback, this is a first release and user inputs are very valuable to make a better app!

Thanks to everyone who shows interest in what I do, if you'd like to see other small app like this for other usecases, feel free to ask me!

    9
  • Hey, I'm working on a small app: Reddy

Reddy is a small app that I've developped over the past few days, and I want to show it to you so you can give me your thoughts, advices and ideas for the app.

Reddy is a GTK Linux app that takes an image (PNG, JPEG, GIF) at random in a subreddit and allows you to repost it in any Lemmy community. I made it principally to share content easily on Lemmy, as Reddit becomes more and more abusive and I think having copies of some content of reddit here on Lemmy is not a bad idea.

The app comes with a few restriction to prevent abuse:

    • You cannot repost the image twice in the same community
    • The reddit post link will always be shown in the body of the post. To give credit where credit is due.

Also, the app fetch the title and NSFW status of the reddit post automatically, but you can change it as needed.

The app require a reddit API client id/secret (The free API seems to still be working as of now) and a Lemmy account.

I'd love to hear your thoughts about such app, if you have any concerns as an user or as an instance owner please share your thoughts!

EDIT: Reddy is out for everyone to try out on Flathub: https://flathub.org/apps/net.krafting.Reddy

  • Which web interfaces, if any, enable keyword filtering or following?

The first function is probably familiar from some other interfaces: filter out posts according to certain keywords.

The second is possibly a little less familiar, but the idea would be like following hashtags on other federated microblogging services like Misskey or Mastodon or the like, except instead using keywords since Lemmy currently doesn't support hashtags.

Emphasis on the "or" here, as an interface that has only one of either is of interest!

    2
  • Developers, please give us more visibility options.

The aim of a streamlined user interface is appreciated, but the current trend towards extreme minimalism can be counterproductive. It often leads to a cumbersome experience where accessing common features or information requires unnecessary navigation.

Take, for instance, the display of the author's name and instance. Certain Lemmy applications deem the instance trivial and choose to hide it, while others omit the author's details from the main feed entirely, necessitating extra steps to uncover them.

Another example is the ability to view upvotes and downvotes as distinct figures. While some may only want the aggregate score, the absence of this feature overlooks the preferences of users who value this detail.

Implementing optional features like displaying author names, instances, or separate up/downvote counts gives users more control over their app experience. This way, those who prefer a clean interface can keep it that way, while those who value specific details can have them readily available.

  • Old Apps Discussion thread

How should our community treat out-of-date and abandoned Apps?

Sometimes a dev is away for an extended period of time, then returns to development. Sometimes an app is officially abandoned but still functions well. Sometimes an app may be under active development but not yet compatible with the latest version of Lemmy.

Should these apps be excluded from our Apps list? Which ones? What criteria should we use? Should we maintain a list of "Old Apps" for posterity, as a code database, etc?

    10
  • Lemmy Tools Discussion thread

This is a place to discuss extensions, scripts, and other tools.

How should we include them in our community? Should we include them in our apps list, or should they be a separate list? Which scripts and tools should be included? Should they be listed in a similar way to the apps list or do we want to see different information about them?

  • Best (Android) apps with a "horizontal swipe through posts" option?

What are the best (Android) apps which have a "horizontal swipe through posts" viewing option?

    • Eternity currently has the best implementation of this feature I've found, but as overall development has stagnated, I'm looking for other options.
    • Connect has a setting for this feature, but it is still experimental and has many bugs.
    • Boost kind of has this feature, but it requires a button tap to view the comments, and then another tap to exit the comments, which doesn't save any time/effort compared to scrolling through posts.

Are there any other apps with this feature that I am unaware of?

Would any devs consider implementing this in their app?

    Thanks in advance!

  • Lemmy userscripts?

I generally use the default experience that my instance gives of Lemmy, but there are some Lemmy extensions available in the Firefox addons store but I don't generally like to install many extensions apart from the strictly necessary ones, and among them I have Violentmonkey because I need it in some places.

Does anyone know some userscripts to improve the Lemmy experience?

It would be a good idea to add an "add-ons" category in the megathread and a "userscripts" section.

  • Hi I'm the new moderator.

I think this community is one that should be very straightforward. It is a community to post about lemmy apps, tools, features, comparisons, etc. It's also a valuable space where app creators and users can interact. This makes it a special place where creators can share best practices with one another and users can share their appreciation and discuss feature requests.

I like lemmy. I like lemmy apps. That's why I'm here. I appreciate the many different approaches that developers take to give users a positive experience, and I think this community is a neat part of that positive experience.

Okay, the elephant in the room: we have come through a challenge with a moderator who was not a good fit for this community. They approached it with a particular agenda, and were more hands-on than this community warrants. That user has since closed their account and removed many of their posts. Some of those posts were helpful, and I trust that members of this community will recreate the content that was valuable. I also want to express appreciation for the many active members of this community who have recently shared their thoughts about what this community could look like in the future, and who spoke up about restoring stability to the community. I also want to acknowledge @kersplosh@lemmy.world for stepping in and providing a bridge as an admin.

In a community like this, a moderator (or team) should be maintaining of stability and civility while remaining otherwise invisible. My only agenda is to be consistent and predictable; open and transparent communication is key.

So, that being said, Please feel free to share any meta thoughts, questions, or requests in this thread. Otherwise, lets get back to the interesting part of exploring the different Lemmy Apps and Tools!

  • Apps that allow to view the modlog?

    Basically, title.

I know Lemmios does as I found it searching for "modlog" in this community, but couldn't find information on other apps.

I have been told Sync doesn't support it, but that's all I know

  • [META] Yet another change in community moderation

Hello everyone. I apologize for the rollercoaster ride in this community over the past week and a half. I have one more change to announce: @THE_MASTERMIND@lemmy.today has been removed as the community moderator. This is in response to multiple private complaints from community members, as well as behaviors inside and outside this community that were brought to the admin team’s attention.

I made the mistake of shortcutting the usual lemmy.world processes when I appointed the user as the new mod. If anyone would like to volunteer to become the new community moderator, you can email info@mastodon.world and make a request. The lemmy.world community team will follow their process from there.

Again, I apologize for all the rapid changes.

  • Seeking Client Suggestions

Hello lemmings, I'm hoping you can help me find the perfect app for Lemmy browsing. In the before times, I used Relay for years on the old subs. Since I migrating I primarily used Sync, which is fine, but I cannot create an alt account login in it on lemmynsfw. I also have used Thunder, which I like but account switching is painful and it takes several minutes for communities to load when switching between accounts.

What's the best app for me? One with mod controls would also be helpful.

Edit: Whoops I left out the important stuff. Mobile, and Android, FOSS preferred

  • What can we do make this community more active ?

It certainly is not that we don't have enough content to post here or interact with because this /c/ supports crosspostung. All opinions will be considered.

Also if there is any new apps to add to tge megathread or anything to remove from it do suggest that too as i don't want to make another thread for updating it as i try as much as its possible to keep it updated https://lemmy.today/post/6716339 .

    20
  • [FOSS] Should i remove lift off from the megathread ?

On one hand it is available for so many platforms and some instances do run under .19 on another those instances are going to update any day now and lift off seems really abandoned . https://lemmy.today/post/6716339 .

    4
  • UPDATE ON COMMUNITY.

The changes made to community are withdrawn because users opinions . But from now on when making a post your first word on tge title should be [NOT FOSS] or [FOSS] respectively. Also i have no intention in anything expect help new users find foss apps i hope you all understand that.

  • MEGATHREAD for fully FOSS lemmy apps and tools without any ads, tracking or any other anti features.

MEGATHREAD for fully FOSS lemmy apps and tools without any ads, tracking or any other anti-features

If any app or tool (regardless of the platform they are in) you know of that is fully FOSS and doesn’t have any ads, tracking, or any other anti-features that didn’t make the list, it is a mistake and you can DM me and I will add it. The same goes for apps or tools that are not really FOSS or have anti-features. Even though I have tried my best, some mistakes could’ve been made. If the newer updates of one of the apps or tools listed made it unworthy to be included in the list, the platform it listed on isn’t available for it, or the link is broken, you can DM me and I will remove/fix it.

  • [ APP STORE UPDATE ] Mlem for Lemmy 1.2

    cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/11740903

    > [ APP STORE UPDATE ] Mlem for Lemmy 1.2 > > Mlem 1.2 is out of beta and live on the App Store! We’ve got loads of new features big and small for you to enjoy. > > ## Major Features > > - Profile editor: you can now change your display name, biography, avatar and banner image, and matrix ID. Check it out in Settings -> Account. > - Easy-tap links: links detected in posts and comments now get a nice big tappable button at the bottom of the post. You can copy and share these links via long-press on the link button, and customize their behavior in Settings -> General. > - Tab bar navigation: tapping the currently selected tab while at the top of the feed will navigate back. Reselecting the search tab from the top of the feed will focus the search bar. > - Upgraded post composer: we’ve made the post composer prettier, added the ability to upload images from files and clipboard, and made it show the account you're posting from. It also now displays a warning if your post runs afoul of your instance’s slur filter. > - Instance page: you can now view detailed instance information, accessible from a community or profile via the ellipsis menu in the navigation bar. > - Saved content feed: saved content has moved! It’s now listed under Feeds along with all the other feeds, and you can also open it from the app shortcuts. > > ## Minor Features > > - Voting icons are now colorized in compact mode > - “Report” and “Block” items in context menus are now colored red and ask for confirmation > - Fixed some inconsistent wording and incorrect capitalization > - Improved performance of markdown rendering > - Redesigned the account switcher and tweaked the behavior of long press/swipe up: long press on profile now swaps accounts immediately if you have two accounts and opens the switcher if you have more, while swipe up always opens the switcher. Both of these gestures can be enabled and disabled in Settings -> Accounts -> Quick Switcher > - Added an indicator to posts from subscribed communities in All and Local feeds > - Added headers to feed pages > - Redesigned app icon selector > - Added more app icons > - Added a new comments indicator to posts you’ve already viewed > - Added the option to open links in the system browser, rather than in-app > - Added support for image links and shields.io badges > - Added options for how your accounts are sorted in the account view and quick switcher > - Tidied the settings page > - Added the option to disable tap-to-collapse on comments > - Refined the swipe action activation angle, so it should be harder to accidentally trigger it while scrolling > - Added the option to require biometric unlocking when opening the app > - Added the option to automatically collapse child comments > - Redesigned the profile page > > ## Bug Fixes > > - Disabled swipe actions on items embedded within the post/comment composer > - Fixed a bug where favoriting a community from the ellipsis menu would cause the subscription status to display incorrectly > - Fixed a bug where adding an account while already logged in would fail on instances running 0.19 > - Fixed a bug where account details were not being loaded in the user view > - Fixed “failed to determine site version” error > - Saved content now loads dynamically on scroll, rather than all at once > - Fixed /u/user@instance and /c/community@instance links not behaving properly > > As always, a huge thanks to our TestFlight for all their bug reports and feedback. > > Cheers, > > The Mlem Group > > Mlem is a free and open source project. 100% of our funding, which pays for things like server time, comes from our generous donors; we do not, and will never, run ads or sell data. Download Arctic on the AppStore!

    ---

I am thrilled to announce that Arctic is now available on the AppStore! Looking back, it's amazing to see how much progress Arctic has made in the last six months. Initially, I began working on Arctic as a personal project to fill the void after leaving Reddit during the API fiasco. I had no intention of releasing it publicly. Now, I have a fully-featured Lemmy client, a fantastic group of beta testers on TestFlight, and an official release on the AppStore.

However, the journey isn't over yet. I have many exciting plans for Arctic, and this is just a significant milestone. Going forward, I plan to release more targeted updates on TestFlight and create a public roadmap for AppStore releases.

I would like to thank everyone who was involved with Arctic's TestFlight for all the valuable feedback and suggestions that have helped shape Arctic!

  • requesting an offline lemmy app

it would be really great to have a lemmy client (or feature of existing client) that allows for batch downloading of a user specified list of communities. this would allow a user to download all the content for the day or week on wifi internet and then depart from the source of internet but slowly & carefully read a selection of material(text posts, comment discussion, and even images like memes). one benefit is that it would be extra impossible to see what users are loading/viewing because they already loaded everything and are disconnected from the internet entirely. performance is also good because there is no network latency that would be experienced, each time, when accessing the servers.
