Starbase activities (2024-06-24):
- Jun 23rd addendum: GSEC-1 is removed (ViX, NSF), revealing GSE-5. Alternate angle and flexing. (reference map)
- Cryo delivery tally.
- GSEC-1 scrapping begins.
- Pad B: Overnight, a concrete pump is deployed.
- CC8800-1 crane assembly: Crane twitches several times over the course of the day (video 1, video 2, video 3), but has not risen yet.
- Amended road closure scheduled: Jun 25th 12:00 to 20:00
LOL, that's faster than my 3x3 PB, and almost twice as fast as my 3x3 average...
That's insane. I can't even tell what method he's using. Does he just one-look every solve?
I'm not clear on how world records in FMC work. If the current WR is below God's number, are future WRs contigent on getting luckier and luckier scrambles?
Eh, I'll give windscreens a pass, since there isn't a great way to do them using multiple smaller pieces, but that dragon head sounds inexcusable. C'mon LEGO, this is not f*cking playmobil. Assembly is the whole point!
Hypothetical, but Black Hole Stars (one of my favourite Kurzgesagt videos).
"Normally that would be the end – today’s stars go supernova, a black hole forms and things calm down. But in this case, the star survives its own death."
"An impossibly dangerous balance has been created – millions of solar masses pushing in, the angry radiation of a force fed black hole pushing out."
I'm hoping that some of the new long wavelength teleescopes like JWST might have a chance of seeing one of these beasts.
Once it cools down, what sort of matter will remain? Would it have a solid surface one could walk around on?
We can't visit other star systems within our current lifetimes, but there's no reason we can't build bigger and better telescopes over the next few decades. That's the next best thing, and we can do it from the comfort of our home planet!
Your username is intriguing. Have you tried it? Is it any good?
Also, neutron stars are awesome. Densities on the order of "Mount Everests per teaspoon"? Almost unimaginable.
Anyone have any ideas on how to increase the particle size of the copper oxalate precipitate?
Sounds cool. Could this be used to improve push notifications from Lemmy apps?
the researchers dipped or soaked brain organoids (brain tissue grown from stem cells) in a mix of ethylene glycol, methylcellulose DMSO and Y27632 (called MEDY) for the cryopreservation of cortical organoids.
They later tested the solution under various conditions to observe the extent to which it could prevent damage.
It involved changing variables, such as the age of the organoids before freezing and how long they were soaked in the solution.
The researchers then allowed the organoids to resume growing after they were thawed for up to 150 days. The researchers observed minimal differences between organoids that had been frozen and those that had not, even in organoids frozen for as long as 18 months, according to Medical Express.
Neat stuff. Still a ways away from freezing a whole brain or organism, but nice incremental steps.

Deployment 20 @Starlink satellites confirmed
They are, the dialogue is absolutely horrendous.
"I wish I could wish away my feelings"
"I've been dying a little bit each day since you came back into my life"
4,5,2,3,6. No ep 1!
That's machete order, I think. While TPM is definitely the most "skippable" of the 6, I think AotC is a worse movie.
I'm not sure how this would scale with larger matrices, and the article is a bit thin on the details.
She only found out she was adopted like an hour prior.
Wait, who did she find this out from? Her adoptive parents were presumably killed in Star Wars with the destruction of Alderaan.
It's also implied that she knew she was adopted. Luke asks her "do you remember your mother, your real mother?" and Leia replies "Just a little bit. She died when I was very young".
Ah, thanks for clarifying. That's an interesting position. I never found the light sabers or blaster bolts in the original trilogy to look that bad. And the practical effects, models, and sets, certainly look superior to the CGI sets in the prequels.
If George had waited another 5 or 10 years it could have been better.
I'm not so sure about this. I think that the limitations George had at the time ended up being part of what made the original trilogy so good. If George had access to better special effects, would we still have gotten scenes like these?
spoiler
Or would we have gotten this instead?
spoiler
George being able to do "whatever he wants" does not necessarily lead to the best movie.
and hate that I can’t find copies without the added crap
Search up "Harmy despecialized" and "4k77". There are many other Star Wars fans who feel the way you do, and they have taken matters into their own hands :)
If we find life somewhere else in the solar system, it will be interesting to see if we are related to it, or whether it developed independently.
It's no Potter Puppet Pals, that's for sure.

I must admit that the details of how the fields are coupled went over my head, but I found the rest of the video quite accessible. Professor Copeland is a joy to listen to, and Brady asks great questions as usual.
I also learned that "inflation" and "the big bang" are not synonymous, and inflation occurred first.

Not very practical, but the chemistry is interesting. Producing a strong acid from a weak acid by using precipitation as the driving force is something I don't see very often.
