Flaw in Kia’s web portal let researchers track, hack cars
  • I was gonna say they still need the fob for the car to actually drive it, but saw it mentioned in the article. I don't have a Kia (used to, but traded it in because of the immobilizer shit), but my car right now has an app to remote-start, but the car itself won't let you drive it if you don't have the fob on you while sitting in the driver's seat.

The group’s web-based Kia hacking technique doesn’t give a hacker access to driving systems like steering or brakes, nor does it overcome the so-called immobilizer that prevents a car from being driven away, even if its ignition is started. It could, however, have been combined with immobilizer-defeating techniques popular among car thieves or used to steal lower-end cars that don't have immobilizers.

But yes, that's just bad security.

  • It's Friday - What are your plans for the week-end?
  • Play some casual basketball tonight after 2 months of not playing. Then if my body is not hurting all over tomorrow, make some new music. I was recently inspired by the Challengers movie soundtrack and want to make an EP of a similar style.

  • Which are lesser-known movies that are well worth seeing?
  • It depends on what "lesser-known" is to you, as we don't know how avid a movie watcher you are. But assuming you mean films that aren't necessarily obscure but aren't too mainstream, I'd suggest:

    • Wind River

    • The Handmaiden (Korean)

    • Incendies

    • Blue Ruin

  • Stop drinking bottled water: Experts warn of health and climate impacts
  • I bring my own refillable container wherever I can, and the most infuriating part is going to an event or concert and you can’t take it in. You’re forced to buy bottled water inside. While I agree from the perspective that it’s to prevent people from throwing stuff at people on stage (prime example of a few people ruining it for everyone), we all know the main reason is profit from selling overpriced water inside the venue.

  • Crowds talking over the artist
  • Not that it wasn’t a thing before, but it got way worse after the pandemic. A lot of people really forgot how to act in public after staying home for an extended period.

  • Non-Americans: what do you like about America?
  • It’s the entertainment center of the world. Shows, concerts, festivals, and all the popular entertainment events happen here. I wouldn’t have been able to see my favorite artists/bands in person back in my home country.

  • ‘Peaky Blinders’ Movie: Tim Roth Latest To Join Cillian Murphy, Rebecca Ferguson & Barry Keoghan In Netflix Feature
  • Amazing cast. I wish it wasn't Peaky Blinders though. They milked that show enough. Don't get me wrong, it was great in the first couple of seasons. But like most shows that try to unnecessarily extend their runtimes, they have to keep upping the stakes every season that follows and it just becomes this large, expansive story that's no longer realistic.

How to choose mutual funds to invest in

I've been on an HSA+HDHP for a couple of years now and only realized recently the interest earned from investing HSA money is also tax free, so I want to start investing a part of my savings and see how it goes. I have 2 options, Betterment or Mutual Funds. I figured I'd try the latter to avoid fees, but I'm not sure which funds to choose. My HSA currently provides 30 fund options.

I see people mentioning Vanguard a lot so I spread out my initial investment into 25% chunks across 4 different Vanguard funds. How did I choose them? Well I literally just looked at the performance graphs and selected the ones that historically went up steadily without major dips. As a total noob, how can I improve my choices? Is there a simple way to decide without having to dive deep into the stock market?

    [RECIPE] Sushi Bake

Since there was some curiosity about what a sushi-bake is, here's my own recipe for it. Sushi-bake is basically a "deconstructed" sushi roll where the ingredients are layered instead of rolled then baked in the oven. There are different variations of how it's made, so this is my take on it. Apologies if I don't have exact measurements of portions, as I just wing it and base it on the taste.

    Ingredients:

    • Sushi rice (regular white rice is fine if you don't have sushi rice, but add a bit more water when cooking to make it more moist).

    • Rice vinegar.

    • Any protein of your choice like crabstick, tuna, or salmon; shredded.

    • Fruit/vegetable. Cucumber, mango, avocado, or any other ingredients you'd like to add to your sushi; sliced and cubed.

    • Japanese mayo (i.e. kewpie).

    • Sriracha. In my case, I used a gochujang-based hot sauce with truffle oil.

    • Furikake.

    • Sesame oil (optional).

    • Sugar/sweetener (optional).

    • Mozarella cheese (optional).

    Recipe:

    1. Cook sushi rice as directed.

    2. Mix your protein, veggies, and fruit in a bowl with Japanese mayo and sriracha.

    3. Mix the cooked sushi rice with a few tablespoons of rice vinegar and a bit of sugar (optional). I personally don’t put sugar because I find the rice vinegar enough for flavor.

    4. Line a baking pan with foil. You can also do without, I'm just lazy with washing.

    5. Grease the pan with a little sesame oil.

    6. Add a base layer of sushi rice on the baking pan and flatten it thoroughly.

    7. Add a layer of your protein/veggie/fruit mix on top of the rice.

    8. Sprinkle a layer of furikake.

    9. Optional: Since I like to put cheese on everything, add a layer of shredded mozarella.

    10. For aesthetic purposes, draw alternating diagonal lines of mayo and sriracha, and top it off with another sprinkling of furikake.

    11. Bake at 350F for 15-20 minutes.

To eat, slice it into square bites. You can eat it as is with chopsticks or a fork/spoon, or use Nori to scoop it up.

[US] Why don't city limits just follow county lines or vice versa?

My city's limits covers one county and half of the county north of it. Why don't they just follow the same lines on the map, with either the county following the city, or the city following the county line?

Lack of content and behind-the-scenes stuff from all-star weekend

Not sure if I'm just not looking at the right places, but did anyone else notice that there's a lack of video content released from this year's all-star weekend? I remember from previous all-star events there were a ton of videos of players interacting on the court and locker room, as well as behind-the-scenes videos. The all-star practice was also officially televised. This time around most of the interesting content I've seen are from people in the arena taking videos from their phones, not official ones.

Getting logged out when switching between wifi and data

Does anyone else get logged out when switching between wifi and mobile data? I notice when leaving the house (or coming home) and my phone switches between wifi and data (and vice versa), the app asks me to login again. I have the beta/testflight version.

Which one is more energy/fuel efficient to cool the inside of the car: lower thermostat + lower fan speed, or slightly higher thermostat + higher fan speed?

On a hot day and traveling in a car, which method of keeping the occupants comfortable with the A/C is more energy and fuel efficient?

    • Set the thermostat to a lower temperature and keep fan speed to the lowest setting

    • Set the thermostat to a slightly higher temperature and compensate by setting the fan to a higher speed so you can feel cool enough with the breeze

DoH blocker for IOS: Mullvad or Aha DNS Blitz

So I prefer to use a DNS blocker (DoH) on my IOS devices to block ads, malware, and trackers. For the longest time I’ve been using Aha DNS Blitz because it allows you to choose the exact filter lists you want to enable. Recently I saw Mullvad now has their own DoH service as well and I’m trying it out now. It’s not as customizable as you can only choose a combination of the general categories (ads, malware, tracking, social, gambling, etc.). On the other hand, Mullvad runs everything on RAM now and they are very transparent of their methods and have a proven track record.

I’d like to get the community’s opinion on which of the two you prefer and why.

Narwhal v2 now shows your api usage

Narwhal released v2 of their app today to the general public. As a loyal narwhal user before I moved to lemmy, I still had the app on my phone so I checked it out.

The app now shows your api usage so you know how much you’ll need to pay based on your average browsing habits. It’s making users uncomfortable because they can’t browse carefree knowing the counter goes up every time they do something in the app.

Such a shame because the new app version is beautiful, but look at what reddit is forcing app devs to do just so their app can live on.

Not getting new color scheme on iPhone 14 Pro Max after IOS 17 update

We have a 12 and 14 ProMax and I noticed the new color scheme change on the 12. For example, the yellow to red-orange change on the calculator buttons, and the blue to dark-blue change on the wifi/data/BT/airplane buttons in control center. However, it didn't change on the 14. Anyone know if there's a setting somewhere to change this?
