- The Love Boat 77-87
with the recent death of the shows theme-song singer jack jones, i thought id give this a rewatch having not seen it since it aired..
i found it more entertaining than i expected.. at least so far. im not sure how it made it to 10 seasons, but some highlights ive noted...
-
cast is introduced as crew, and not even by character name except julie!!
-
at least 3 or 4 celebrity appearances every episode! its kinda neat seeing all these old stars out of their element in small vignettes. seriously every star you can think of of this era seems to have popped on.
-
the ship is so freakin tiny. you have to think there are mega-yachts bigger these days
-
writing can be funny. the relationship 'advice' is somewhat dated, but not inappropriate at times. 'family ties' mom (MBB) is in a centerfold the first episode!
so far it could have been titled 'the apology boat' due to the wraps ups of most stories almost completely entail confession and apology.

- How to "Follow" film festivals?
General questions, the backstory is I just found out that The Brutalist was at the Savannah Film Festival, and I feel like I really missed out on both seeing it and seeing the panels with the actors. I don't really know how to follow these things though, so as a fairly newby into the film world, what is the best way to follow events?
How do I know that there is a premier near me, or what they're showing? Not saying I want to go to everything, but it'd be nice to know if there are things going on that I would like to attend. Is there a way to do this at a larger/national scale? It's incredibly frustrating, I google something like "Brutalist Film Festivals" and the results are all celebrity rags about past events, how do I find out where they're going to be next?

- It's Pony (TV Series 2020–2022) ⭐ 6.4 | Animation, Short, Action
A fun show I hadn't heard of, my kids 7-13 love it, goofy but not laugh-out-loud like Bluey. Very tolerable for adults as well.
Worth a shot if you're looking for something new for the kids.
Rated G.

- remembering Northern Exposure
what an amazing dramedy.
especially the first several seasons. so many wonderful characters, it really has something for everyone.
buttery voiced john corbetts seamless radio-narration and its philosophical bent fits right in with a town full of quirky personalities. the indigenous population playing a wonderful straight-man to the town.
it even holds up well. the remoteness denotes a lack of tech that isnt too far out of place today.
this is one of those shows where you just want to be a part of it.
it could also never be replicated/rebooted successfully... lighting striking twice and all that.
anyone else have such fond memories of northern exposure? im about to start my per-decade rewatch.
- Filmmakers Are Worried About AI. Big Tech Wants Them to See ‘What's Possible’www.wired.com Filmmakers Are Worried About AI. Big Tech Wants Them to See ‘What's Possible’
Amazon is hosting AI filmmaking competitions. Meta is letting directors test Movie Gen. As tech companies develop new tools, they need filmmakers to show they can be used responsibly.
When Hollywood’s writers and actors went on strike last year, it was, in part, because of AI. Actors didn’t care for the notion that their likenesses could be used without their permission, whether by the studios that hired them that week or by someone at home with a computer in 2040. Writers didn’t want to do punch-ups on potentially crummy AI scripts or have their words (or ideas) cannibalized by large language models that didn’t pay them a dime.
But while some Hollywood filmmakers came out of the strikes fearful of how AI might wreck their industries, others wanted to learn more. This week, many of those filmmakers gathered in a movie theater in Culver City, California, for the inaugural Culver Cup, a generative-AI film competition sponsored by FBRC.AI and Amazon Web Services.

- What are some good horror movies by POC writers/directors?
Planning to watch through Jordan Peele's movies for the spooky season and thought it'd be nice to expand that out to other movies from POC creatives. My current list includes Sorry to Bother You (another favorite of mine I've been meaning to rewatch), Bad Hair, Horror Noire, and Ganja & Hess. Any other movies that fit the theme that you would suggest? They certainly don't have to stick to African American/Black creatives, and English isn't a must, but would be preferred.

- What's your pet peeve when it comes to tropes? What bothers you when you see it in a show or a movie?
I'll go first. Mine is the instant knockout drug. Like Dexter's intramuscular injection that causes someone to immediately lose consciousness. Or in the movie Split where there's the aerosol spray in your face that makes you instantly unconscious. Or pretty much any time someone uses chloroform.

- Cosby...
I really liked 'the cosby show'. it was a significant change in the demonstration of a successful, minority family. its funny. it also holds up well; the writing did not date itself too much to the era.
but, ya know... Cosby. can you separate the artist from the art? a part of me feels like i should still be able to enjoy the show even though he is a terrible person.
thoughts?
