  • Would that option work with the Mullvad client though or would I need to setup the ovpn files and what not?

I can check the box to allow it but right now the option to select a connection (to the right) is greyed out.

How can I prevent my PC from connecting to the internet without a VPN connection?
  • Do you have any recommendations on guides how to do the former? I saw posts like this AskUbuntu post but they use the .ovpn files instead of the Mullvad client from my understanding.

  • How can I prevent my PC from connecting to the internet without a VPN connection?

I am running EndeavorOS with XFCE 4 and am using Mullvad as my VPN. To be clear I know Mullvad's client has a lockdown and kill switch mode but it seems like after updating it my PC is connecting to the internet without it. I could be mistaken but I don't think it's blocking anything at that point. I would likely have to wait until the next Mullvad update to test this for sure though. If someone can either confirm or deny my suspicions I would greatly appreciate it because I wouldn't have to find another work around.

All that said if that is the case, how can I prevent my PC from connecting to the internet when Mullvad is not running?

Maybe there's a simple option like binding the network manager to mullvad client application? Ideally I'd like to avoid either not using their client and using some thrown-together update script like

    > #!/bin/bash

    > xfce4-terminal --command="sudo pacman -Syu";

    > /opt/Mullvad VPN/mullvad-vpn";

    ---

Edit: Maybe it is connecting after the update but not showing the GUI. I came across this post on GitHub

    > I have a Mullvad desktop app set to launch on start-up. Also "Start minimized" is set to false. At the system start-up I get connected to the VPN, so the Mullvad daemon apparently starts, but no application window launches. I have to launch it manually.

I did not check to see if this was happening after I updated.

Should I nuke my win10 install?
  • I would hold onto it for a bit. If you want to run software that isn't from Steam like the game modding app Vortex for example it can be easier to tinker with it on Windows.

Most of it can run on Windows just fine with Wine or Lutris but you might run into the odd graphical glitch that can be a headache if you are inexperienced especially if you rarely use that application.

  • What's your favorite Super Mario Bros ROM hack?

For a long time my favorite was Excite Mario Bros.

    > Excitebike riders, Kirby, and Samus are trying to stop you at every turn from reaching the end of the levels! Here is a full game hack which changes all the levels and graphics. Also the music has been slightly altered to give the original music some change.

It adds dash and wall jump mechanics. I haven't beaten it yet but I am really enjoying the level design.

I suppose there is the option to eliminate any kind of name based suggestions.

  • Did the premise of an entity approaching you only when it's not being viewed originate with Doctor Who's Weeping Angels?

The Weeping Angels apparently originated with Steven Moffat seeing a statue of a weeping angel in a structure in a cemetery and returning later to find out it was gone. At least according to this RadioTimes article. They first appeared in 2007 in the episode Blink.

I am wondering if this mechanic has been done before though?

It's become quite common in the indie horror scene.

In the 2007 video game Sherlock Holmes: Nemesis Watson would not move if in the player's view but would teleport behind the protagonist when given the opportunity. A video of it can be found here.

Considering this could be an easy place holder for developers or a way to get around programming walking animations all together I'm surprised no one took the idea and ran with it before then.

All that said it could have been used in books or movies. Maybe a twist on some other vision-centric myth like Medusa or Orpheus and Eurydice?

  • Am I the only one who finds this so weird when we talk about LLMs? If someone makes a bot that resembles some specific person, that person’s rights aren’t really violated, and since they’re all fictional content, it is very hard to break actual laws through its content. At that point we would have to also ban people’s weird fan fiction, no?

Not arguing about whatever they want or don’t want on their platform, but the legal & alleged moral questions / arguments always weird me out a bit, because there’s no one actually getting hurt in any sort of way by weirdos having weird chats with computers.

I could see some people making the argument that it could be considered defamatory especially in cases where it is being peddled as real. Politicians might even try to link it in with revenge porn or other non-consensual pornography laws.

It would sure get messy in a hurry though. Imagine someone trying to make lewd photos of Tomb Raider's Laura Croft for example and accidentally generates images resembling Alicia Vikander or Angelina Jolie from the Tomb Raider movie.

I wonder if this will end up being the updated version of the Powkiddy V90 a lot of people have been asking for and if this will end up being the direct competition to the Miyoo Mini Flip despite it's lack of thumb sticks.

I feel like custom firmware availability and whether or not there are blatant design issues (ex. faulty hinges like the Retroid Pocket Flip) will decide how well this does.

    How about you? Any thoughts?

Does anyone know if there is a way to list Retro Achievement availability in ES-DE for Android?

In AmberELEC there was a way to display a trophy next to games that indicated if there were Retro Achievements available. I believe pressing start on the title would also allow you to view the achievements.

I'm wondering if there's a way to display this with the Android version of ES-DE? Maybe it's similar to the non-Android version that people frequently use on handheld PCs like the Steam Deck. I'm not sure.

The picture is ES-DE with the ES-BOY theme. It's pretty neat and even uses Fallout sound effects. Unrelated but I wanted to add some flair to my post.

What are some things in hindsight that should have been giveaways that you had some form of social anxiety?

Some personal examples that come to mind are:

    • Being late for work because I heard the people in the apartment next to me leave and I waited five minutes so I wouldn't have to share the elevator

    • Cleaning my house for two hours before strategically placing items I can talk about just so I can have a friend of multiple years over and after they left replaying things I said to make sure I didn't say anything embarrassing

    • Not being able to look my Tinder date in the eyes even though we've been talking for a month and we had planned to have relations that evening

    • Spending $200 on a sweater at a craft market because I worked up the courage to ask the price and couldn't bring myself to say no thanks

    • Forgetting something I needed at a store and just leaving because I didn't want to face the cashier

They're all things that are silly in hindsight that I later realised the average person likely wouldn't have done. I know no one would have really cared in these situations.

Just curious what stories people have.

What did you get into as it was dying or otherwise on its way out?

I feel like I do this a lot with podcasts. I started watching the Gus and Eddy podcast and finished it about a month before the last episode was released for example.

It could be anything though. An online game, an OS, a console, TV show, a forum, or anything else. I'm just curious what people have to say.

It also doesn't need to be "dead". It could just be a significant change where a chunk of the community left.

What are some mainstream game series where you really do need to start from the first game?

Some games have decent recaps or disconnected stories which mean you can start from the latest release and still have the full experience.

In Fallout for example, with the 3D games, you can start wherever and because it's a new protagonist and location every time you aren't missing a ton. The disconnect is slightly more noticeable going from Fallout to Fallout 2 (the isometric titles) however because of how the games build on top of each other.

What I am wondering about are series where you really do need to start from the beginning (or some early point) to get the full experience.

Can you think of any examples that are truly difficult?

Maybe they started on DOS, MSX, or the NES and their latest releases are on the PS5 and Xbox Series X and on top of that the genre shifted.

This is obviously going to vary from person to person. Like with The Elder Scrolls series for example. People might argue for different starting points.

    ---

For context I am playing The Witcher 2 and I feel like I'm missing a notable part of the story. That might be because it's a fantasy game though and it isn't based in our world.

It made me think of Metal Gear and Final Fantasy. Two popular series where I don't know how interconnected the games are.

Mine was our CRT TV. I would rapidly push the power button on and off because I thought the picture coming and going looked cool but eventually it fell inside of the TV. I think I later stuck a magnet on the TV.

Are there audiobook releases that have a visual component?

I listen to a decent amount of audiobooks and I'll occasionally miss a one-off description of something important. I was wondering if there are projects to add a visual component to audiobooks? Official or fan-made it doesn't matter. If it does exist what would I search for to find something like this?

Maybe a video with AI generated images and the listener is required to supply their own audiobook or something like that.

I feel like I have seen this done with the Bible several times.

    ---

Edit: It seems like the answer is no.

People have suggested movies, VNs, and point and click games but that's more than what I am after. All I really want is something that accompanies the audio that can occasionally act as a quick reference. If you are still have trouble imagining what I am talking about think of an audio-only podcast that is uploaded to Youtube. They might add a photo in post to accompany what they are talking about but you can still enjoy it without the visual aspect.

I thought there might be a group of people on Youtube doing this with AI images or an audiobook publisher commissioning art to do this.

What are your thoughts on the GKD Pixel? Anything a potential buyer should be aware of?

I've seen the Retro Games Corp follow up video and a few others on the device but I can't recall all the info.

Anyone know how to get the Xbox 360 chatpad working on Linux?

Specifically Arch. I found a GitHub page for xbox360wirelesschatpad but the installation instructions are for Windows. I know LibUSB is available but the vjoy driver doesn't seem to be. I feel like there's probably some comparable package.

There might also be an alternative way to do this all together. There seem to be a few methods of doing this on Windows using third party applications.

    ---

I am mostly doing this for the novelty of it but I feel like it could be useful for navigating my PC from my couch or responding to messages through Steam.

It seems like this whole process is pretty plug and play with the Xbox One controller and it's chatpad but that's not what I am after.

What are some movies with notable director's commentary?

Notable can mean many things. Maybe it was high quality, insightful, and provided context for a more artistic scene. Maybe they teased a cut scene that would have radically shifted the tone of the movie. Maybe it was funny. Maybe the director absolutely hated what they produced and is only providing narration because of a contractual obligation and a lot of alcohol.

I am looking to hear about anything that stuck with you in some way.

A lot of people consume content online where director's commentary frequently isn't present but I imagine there are still a lot of people who are into this niche.
