“I mean, it’s clearly not working in Israel at the moment,” he said. “In my view, it sort of emboldens the worst aspects of the current government. They exploit this isolationist thing, like ‘The whole world is against us. No one will come and play.’ It’s used to further their nefarious agendas, while, at the same time, punishes ordinary fans.”
That's a good point, we wouldn't want to punish the poor ordinary fans. Who live in Israel. In illegal settlements.
it's not a cultural boycott and that's the fucking point. it's a targeted deprivation of profits from capitalists to extract concessions, and it is provably effective. "cultural boycott" is just nonsense anyway, what does it mean to boycott a culture, especially a nonexistant isntraeli one
Genocide is a key component of Israeli culture, as pointed out by US lawmakers. To oppose genocide is a cultural boycott of Israel, and it harms Israelis by making them feel like targets.
Look, trying to punish ethnic cleansing, genocide, and aparthied sounds good and all, but have you considered that it's actually quite inconvenient to me?
But I also do not support the Boycott, Divestments and Sanctions movement, as you know. I think the cultural boycott of Israel is cowardly and shameful. In fact, this is partly the reason I am playing Israel – not as support for any particular political entity but as a principled stand against those who wish to bully, shame and silence musicians. I don’t intend to engage in a detailed discussion as to how the boycott of Israel can be seen to be anti-Semitic at heart and, furthermore, does not work (rather, it risks further entrenching positions in Israel in opposition to those you support), but even the estimable Noam Chomsky considers the BDS as lacking legitimacy and inherently hypocritical. What we actually have here is a fundamental difference of opinion as to what the purpose of music is.
Like seriously though, I started listening to his music maybe about a year ago and I just loved all of what I heard, and seeing this just made me feel so bad
Yeah, I feel the same way. I'll still keep listening to it because unlike Kanye he didn't say something stunningly bad, basically just the kind of ignorant stuff I'd expect from an out of touch boomer.
