- When dating, "Just be confident" is just bad advice if you ask me.
"Being confident" is dangerously close to straight up bothering people. Plus it only really works if you're good looking.
- Everytime I find interesting people with interesting thoughts on youtube they add weird adds I lose interest
Honestly, I'd rather go back to having adds pre video than youtubers who sneak in obvious ads.
I'm talking about these videos where they give you advice on a specific topic like 12 life lessons and the 7th life lesson is better sleep quality and suddenly they say this video is sponsored by XY pharmacy go get your Melatonin now and move on to the 8th life lesson.
Or how to make friends videos and suddenly they transition into a Magnesium add because better sleep = more friends.
It doesn't make the other arguements less valueable but I lose interest in those youtubers quite fast for that reason. I'm always like: "Oh no I know where this is heading too..." when I am listening to a video in my car and yep, I am most of the time correct - it's an ad.
I see they need money but if you have millions of subscribers I can't understand. Throw an ad before the video starts or something but make a video about the topic.
- I dislike when adults need hand holding
So this is going to be a little bit of a rant and a little bit of a laugh
A few days ago at work the morning shift manager asked me to lock in the room I was using when I was done. This is because the night shift has been coming in there and not cleaning up after themselves. Unfortunately due to them coming in early and me trying to finish up my work. I was not able to get it locked before they showed up.
I let them know that I've been told to lock the room. I gave them a half hour warning before I had to leave and then a 10 minute warning. They were left willingly. They told me it doesn't matter because they can get back in, because one of the doors didn't lock. For this reason they decided to leave their stuff in the room. They even had to unlock the door that they said didn't lock to leave. As I had already locked that one.
Well surprised Pikachu face. They could not get back in the room and at least one of them had left their car keys in there. About half hour later I got a call from the right manager ask me why I left the room and why I didn't put their stuff outside room, because now he has to drive to work on his day off to unlock the room for them so they can get her stuff (I don't have a key to that room).
I feel like I gave them every opportunity to not have their stuff locked in the room. And I've never been one to be sorry for somebody who's been repeatedly told something is going to happen and then gets surprised when it happens.
I don't think I might have any fallout on this, but still the night manager is a little annoying with me right now. Luckily I only work morning and mid shift. So I don't have to deal with him a lot.
P.S. I have no problem when someone needs help or kindness. We all need support sometime. But if someone wants to do something stupid after they have been told not to, I will not save them.

- Vent from someone with a phobia of insects now that summer is nearing.
Hello all. I wanted to make this post because I feel like venting a bit. I know the “cure” to my problem is CBT or exposure therapy, but I was hoping to speak to like-minded people or anybody who feels like sharing their thoughts.
I hate that I’m not able to enjoy summer like most others. I hate that I flinch at the very sound of buzzing or the sight of flying insects. I know that it’s an irrational fear, I know it’s not normal and I know I look stupid when I cover my ears or flee into my room whenever I see or hear an insect. I’ve been told “they can’t hurt you, they’re nothing” so many times and I know they can’t hurt me but why is there minimal understanding of this phobia? I hate that whenever I tell people about this, I’m mostly met with “yeah they’re disgusting I hate them too”; it’s not that I find them disgusting, it’s that they cause me heart-pumping palm-sweating fear. It’s that I can’t enjoy landscapes and being out in the country like regular folks, I’m always alert and on the watch whenever I’m on an excursion because the fear and anxiety is so greatly installed in me. It’s that I sometimes end up hallucinating the buzzing sounds that jerks me awake.
This definitely sounds like self-pity, and honestly it is. Because sometimes you just feel sorry for yourself and today is that day for me. I hope I can enjoy this summer despite these creatures. I hope I can speak to people who suffer from the same phobia, or people with any degree of empathy at all.
- 38 and once again looking for a new career.
I am feeling pretty detached at the moment. Figure I would use this space to think aloud.
I have been fighting with admin at my school for proper support for me as a teacher and for help fixing a broken program for my students. I got laid off effective the end of the school year. Think it might be because I was a pain in the ass, but I don't know for sure. I wasn't doing a great job because they overloaded me. More different classes than most teachers. Shit support.
Covid money ran out, they had to lay off some of the conditionally certified teachers and I was one of them. The timing was just... all my complaints, I they were making me cover a position that was vacant while doing my regular teaching, and the students were missing out. I don't think I could prove it but it feels like they got rid of me because I was not satisfied with their answers.
I can't bring myself to finish getting my teacher certification. I'd have to go out of county to teach.
I worked 10 years with the homeless, burnt out and fucked it up. Then 2 years working for a law firm supposedly helping people and figure out its just bullshit, helping people was incidental and barely helped. Worked for the cops supposedly helping addicts in person, they just wanted me to do data entry. No idea what I should do.
It took a lot of courage to get myself to try being a teacher. 3 years at the schools and now I fucking again have to figure out what to do all over again.
And I have to go into the school for over a month and pretend everything is okay. Fuck I hate this.
- How was your day, Lemmy? Because mine was mortifying!
I got stuck on a lunchtime video conference today with some people in my department and a vendor. I hate meetings at noon, but with timezones being a factor, it was the only available time the vendor could meet. Usually, I'm only on these for technical consultation, so I rarely need to speak other than to clarify a point or answer questions about our infrastructure. Those are usually toward the end of the meeting.
That said, I just muted myself and ate at my desk because I was starving and would have plenty of time to eat a quick bite before it got to the point where I had to say anything.
What I did not realize was that even though I was muted, my webcam was on. So 6 people I work with plus three vendors all watched me eat a bag of tacos, and no one said anything!
Like, when I eat a taco with people around, I do eat it in a dignified way. Less so when I'm alone (or think I'm alone) and wolfing it down before I have to do something So, yeah, it was not a pretty sight.
I'm still mortified, but at least I am laughing about it as I'm typing this out.
- What's a good name for a black cat?
I’ve been thinking about getting a black cat after graduation. I want to pick a black cat cuz I think they’re pretty cool. So might as well think of a name first rather than giving them one when I am actually carrying them home.
One of my friends has given me the name “Murphy” and I think that’s actually kinda cool, like 4 out of 5. I was thinking Inky, Pancake, and Filigraph (if the cat is striped). What do you think about the names? Are there any other cool names?
- Today I learned: Desmos has a 3d calculator!
It's in beta but it's been out since september of last year and all I can think is WHY DIDN'T ANYBODY TELL ME THIS?
I've been using desmos for years now and always wished they had one. I'm gonna spend the evening plotting random surfaces to see what they look like.
- "The Price of a Mile" hits me differently nowadays
The song (by Sabaton) came on as I was heading to work this Thursday, and I found myself tearing up. It's the first time in a few years that I heard it and it hit differently. I've got relatives and friends of friends in active duty.
Not anyone I'm in touch with, but I've met them, and I hear of them. The price of a mile is the suffering and lives of them, their friends, and so many other young men.
One of my bubbles has been burst by what's happening in Ukraine & Israel. War is no longer history, news and reports. It has become a lot more real to me, and it's something I could end up being a part of.
This feels like a rather serious topic for a community called casual conversation, but feel free to share your thoughts on this, or a "bubble bursting" moment of your own.

- Sick of internet moderators and their ego trips.
I just want forums to chat about current events, argue about stupid fandoms, and bicker with internet trolls. Reddit used to be that, and I had hopes for Lemmy, but everything here is choked to death by over moderation that has nothing to do with keeping healthy communities. It's just thinly veiled echo chambers that don't want to admit what their community is about.
This is coming off a ban over disagreeing with vegans calling dietary disagreements the same as racism. The dude literally said different species were similar to humans having different races. I called that 1800s slave owning theory racism if I've ever seen it lmao.
I know people dont care for internet drama, I just wanted to rant. The internet of tomorrow fucking sucks.

- Spouse - 0; garage door opener - 3
Today marked the third time my spouse has lost their battle with the garage door opener. We have historically been used to a smaller car. But upgrading to a new EV crossover (a year ago) has brought with it its own challenges.
The first time it happened, the lift gate was up when the door button was pressed. Minor scratch to the plastic covering the light bar.
The second time, a few months ago, a scratch in the back metal that is somewhat noticeable. They said they were tired after a long day and the washer door was open so it seemed like they needed more space and weren't thinking enough when they closed it.
The third time, tonight, they were also tired. No washer this time. Noticeable small dent in the metal panel accompanied with a scratch that went thru to the metal underneath.
I have gone ahead and finished putting up the tennis ball on a string as a guide. I started the idea after incident #2 but procrastinated on putting it up as I thought that was the end of it. I learned we needed it.
I have let them know that accidents can happen, but that they can be responsible for getting it fixed. It's ok. We just need to keep this car now until it dies.
- Would anyone be interested in some "karaoke"?
Back in the not so distant beforetimes, I was a part of a community which occasionally hosted goofy "karaoke" nights. Basically, we'd all just use vocaroo or whatever service and upload ourselves singing whatever, or trying to pronounce words from one another's languages/dialects/accents.
I recorded a parody of Baby Got Back(yt tracker removed, re-uploaded from an archived capture) based on someone else's parody verse, the Aussies would all come in and say g'day and Mell-bern, we'd all try to speak Swedish, and it was a pretty good time.
Showing you guys that song may get me kicked out of that community, but I hope not.
If anyone here is from there by chance, tell TMW I said the anniversary of the retirement of his space helmet is coming up. I wanna say August 19.
And tell Airport I said sup.
- It's interesting what alcohol has done to people I know since years
Good morning.
I am 31 and I scrolled through the pics on facebook from ten years ago and looking at current pictures of people I have no or barely contact to these days and I gotta say I am glad I hopped off that boat a few years ago.
Most of the people I know and hang out with back then were in the "Turbojugend", kind of a fanclub of Turbonegro and all they (and I) did was get wasted to punk music. Looking back it was fun and don't regret my early 20s but I am so glad I am not that person anymore.
I still have contact to a few of them and most of them are now 35+ year olds and still drink, party the same way they(we) did ten years ago.
It seems like they are having a blast but I noticed nothing changed. They are the same people they were ten years ago. I noticed it this weekend when I decided to go out to party again and oh man it was enough. I left four hours into the party. Since I don't think the whole experience was wack. Drunk people yelling in my ear "REMEMBER BACK THEN? THOSE WERE THE YEARS" etc. some dude licking my cheeks smelling like he puked 20 minutes ago (he did) and other people yelling they got erection (song from Turbonegro).
If I look at the pictures they post every weekend I see exhausted people and emptyness. It's actually so sad.... dunno I don't want to shame them, they are enjoying their lives.
It's just crazy what alcohol does and the thing is, in this group "Turbojugend" alcohol is so normal. It's really crazy.
- You ever fix something and have no idea what you did that actually fixed the problem?
Usually its something computer related and every time it happens, something about fixing something without knowing why it works now bothers me almost as much as never fixing whatever it is.
