Phonebooks
  • Did the voice on the payphone say: You must please deposit 25 cents to place your call LOL I think that's engrained in my memory

    Fun fact:
Once touch tone phones became the norm there were actually games you could play by just calling a number. There was also a number you could call and get the local time and temperature. Oh, and lets not forget Mr. MoviePhone!

  • Phonebooks
  • Rotary phones weren't even that long ago?!??! I still remember the swooop, click-click-click-click sound, oh, and the ear shattering ringing bells. I am happy that in our lifetime we've come so far that kids don't understand tools from just a couple decades ago. I remember my father showing me a stack of punch cards he used at work and warning me not to touch them - but what I also know is, that those kids better get the hell off my damn lawn!

  • Phonebooks
  • Mid 40s, and I too feel old now - at first I thought OP was setting us up for a joke. The local phone company still delivered phone books to everyone in my city until a few years ago.

I think it was an old legal requirement for any phone company providing landline services to also provide phonebooks. Unfortunately most weren't even recycled, they were either burned in backyard firepits, or just thrown out

  • Which are lesser-known movies that are well worth seeing?
  • I've forgotten about that movie! It's as if every fear, and suspicion, I had about the people working in restaurants came true 😂. It's been a while since I've seen it's memes...going to have to dig into the old meme folder and get posting

  • Which are lesser-known movies that are well worth seeing?
  • Same! I think the only one I didn't really care for was Covenant, I felt it wasn't paced the same as his other movies, but I'd still watch it again if it was streaming.

In regards to Snatch and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, also two of my favorite movies, thanks for pointing them out, defintely a fun time!

  • What electric toothbrushes do you guys use?
  • Same here, I feel as though I see the Oral-B heads on sale at least once a month, but the Sonicare heads are almost never on sale. Years ago I noticed the Philips Sonicare site running sales around Black Friday, but there haven't been any for the last couple of Black Fridays.

Every now and again I'll see discounted heads on Amazon, but I've also heard stories that there is a 50/50 chance of getting a knock-off that won't work with handles - as Amazon combines all of their products for storage regardless of the seller

  • they sure like to put big guns or smaller vehicles
  • And here I thought the 70s were a wild time:

Aerial Artillery Design Study - Two Externally-Mounted XM204 Howitzers on a CH-47C Helicopter

    Abstract:
Design arrangement and mounting approaches, weight estimates, balance calculations, stress analyses, and helicopter performance predictions of an aerial artillery system utilizing two externally-mounted 105mm XM204 soft recoil howitzers on a CH-47C Chinook helicopter are presented. This design provides for all the firing modes and operational capabilities required by the Weapons Command, including the ability to offload one howitzer when the helicopter is hovering. The study includes an analysis of the structural integration of the weapons and aircraft including muzzle blast effects and airframe dynamic responses. A minimum adequate fire control system for air-to-ground firing and typical ground artillery fire control equipment was included.

  • 6,000 sheep will soon be grazing on 10,000 acres of Texas solar fields
  • I'll admit I'm not sure of the pros/cons of either. All I know about sheep/goats is that sheep produce wool, and goats produce milk...and I'm pretty sure the only reason I know that, is due to one of the many city builders I've played 😂

  • Homemade tortillas just hit different
  • Are you the guy that made a tortilla press for his 3yr old? I saw this on Imgur and it made my day imgur.com link.

I had no idea homemade tortilla presses were a thing, but I guess they had to come from somewhere before mass production

  • What movie did you watch as I kid which you shouldn't have?
  • Omen, Excorcist, Nightmare on Elm St, Jason, Cujo, Friday the 13th - I was a very free range kid. The one that really sticks out is (IIRC) The Amityville Horror. There is a scene with these red glowing eyes down a dark hallway...the adult in me knows it was probably just some guy with two flashlights, but it still raises the hairs on my arms thinking about it

  • Fully-Accessible Theme Park Reopens Following Major Expansion

These are older stories, but I just found out about this place. Here is a 2nd article: https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/experience/theme-parks/2024/05/12/morgans-wonderland-theme-park-accessibility/73660563007/

I also just read that they're planning a hotel geared towards families with disabilities

A one-of-a-kind theme park that’s fully accessible to people with disabilities is back to life complete with new rides and attractions after undergoing a multi-million dollar expansion.

Morgan’s Wonderland, an inclusive theme park in San Antonio, recently reopened after four months of improvements and upgrades.

Following the $6.5 million overhaul, the park now offers a first-of-its-kind 4-seat zip line that can accommodate riders in wheelchairs as well as those who need extra restraints, respiratory equipment or other special gear. Another new offering is the wheelchair-accessible Jette’s Wonder Bikes which features glider-style cars that riders can make go up and down using pedals or hand cranks. There is also a lake cruise and a 4D cinema that offers riders in wheelchairs a roller-coaster experience using a video screen with motion effects.

First baby beavers born in urban London for 400 years

Baby beavers have been born in urban London for the first time in more than 400 years, a conservation project said.

The family of Eurasian beavers were introduced to a nature reserve in Ealing, west London, in October as part of a project that aims to get the public to engage with nature, to study biodiversity improvements and to monitor flood mitigation effects.

Project leaders said the fact that at least two babies, or kits as they are called, had been born on the Paradise Fields site in Greenford showed the beavers were "happy" with the habitat.

Dr Sean McCormack, one of the volunteers behind the project, said he and the other volunteers were "totally over the moon, thrilled, excited".

    Chef! (1993-1996)

I used to watch this on PBS in the 90s, it stars Lenny Henry. If you liked 'The Bear' I think you may also like this.

Someone has posted clips from various episodes (just so you can get a taste): https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLB32A14286F5B026F

    Babylon 5 (1993-1997)

In an effort to redeem myself I was going to post Island City (1994), but Dr Wesker beat me to it by about 2 months. So I give you Bablyon 5 (1993-1997) , S01 intro.

I remember seeing the pilots for both B5 and Island City on UPN(?) on the same day

Re-using an 8 bay Synology NAS case

I have an old Synology 1819 NAS that was the unfortunate victim of the Intel Atom/Clock bug. I would like to repurpose the case as I like the compact form factor. Has anyone tried replacing a synology mobo with something else (ex: an ITX board or a Raspberry Pi), and using an alternative operating system?

    Build Suggestions

Please forgive me, of the many things I've forgotten...this is...one of them. I could've sworn there used to be an updated rolling sticky with 3-4 (maybe more?) build suggestions from 'meh' to 'super ultra mega I can't afford space kraken' posted and maintained by people way smarter than I am, somewhere on the main page/sidebar of PCMR.

I've got a ~6 year old mini-ITX AMD build that I'm hoping to replace with something similar, and I'd used those suggestions last time with great success. I'm hoping to build something that'll last another 6 years. If anyone has any idea what the heck I'm talking about, I'd appreaciate you pointing me the right direction. Thanks in advance!
