PC Master Race
- Holiday Giveaway - Steam Codes! - Giveaway Ended
EDIT January 6, 2024:
All games have been accepted by the winners! Thanks everyone for your participation! I loved reading the different messages and hearing some of the positives, the things that made you feel hopeful, and a bit about some of the games you've played. While I wish I could give you all more copies of games, we will do another giveaway like this in the future.
Stay safe, and happy 2024 ahead!
EDIT January 5, 2024:
Minor edit for posterity. All games have been claimed apart from God of War. Each winner of God of War never responded so I'm working down the list through a randomizer to select the eligible winner for this game. I'll update this post one final time as soon as we have an eligible winner that claims this final giveaway.
EDIT January 4, 2024:
There was no response received for the selected winners for Elden Ring and God of War.
I am re-drawing for both these games and will update this post once these final two game codes are accepted by the new winners.
EDIT January 3, 2024:
All games have been claimed apart from two: Elden Ring and God of War. Considering it is the holiday and there may be some obligations, I'm extending the 24 hour window by another 24 hours. If the winners do not reply by Jan 4, 2024 ~ 9 AM ET, they will be forfeit and I will re-draw new winners.
EDIT January 2, 2024:
Giveaway Ended! All winners have been notified, but they have 24 hours to respond. If the winner does not respond, I will re-draw for the new winner the next day until all codes have been exhausted.
I will also be editing this post periodically to acknowledge who won and if they accepted.
I loved reading all these comments, and thanks for everyone responding here and also sharing an optional story! There's a lot of positivity and hope out there, which makes me also feel the same.
P.S. - I really wish I could afford more games to giveaway to you all, but we can certainly do something like this in the future and perhaps make some kind of collaborative giveaway.
Stay safe, and happy new year ahead!

- N100M power consumption at idle.
Any one use an AsRock N100M? Whats idle power consumption on it like?
I have the n100dc-itx, and its about 6-8w on my home server, but was thinking of changing it to an N100M, as the n100dc-itx might be needed elsewhere.
Anyone got one? Else should I spend much more on the Odroid H4 plus?
- Why Mint and Ubuntu?
Keep noticing that when taking about Linux distro recommendations (on Reddit) users recommend Mint and Ubuntu for gaming.
Now don't get me wrong, they're great distros and with a bit of work are great for games, but I feel like theres better recommendations for new users looking into getting into gaming on linux.

- Small ssd
I finished my first build a few months ago, put fedora workstation on it, everything's been great so far, but there are a few games I have and love which don't work, or are incredibly unstable. so I'm looking for a small, let's say 256gb SSD, to dual boot with windows for those games as well as creative work with lightroom.
My current drive has enough storage for a windows dual boot on its own, but I do not want windows to hide the linux partition or delete it completely.
So my questions are:
- Should I get a larger SSD than 256gb?
- what would be a good drive at that size?

- Turns out that my motherboard's WiFi antenna is necessary for Bluetooth to work correctly
I was troubleshooting Bluetooth connection today and I thought that this is somehow related to software (PipeWire, bluez, bluetoothd and all that stuff). But no. Apparently Bluetooth barely works when WiFi antenna is disconnected from my ASUS motherboard.
Anyway, this might save a lot of time for someone, so I'm posting it here.
- I cloned my failing SSD using Macrium Reflect, but it didn't copy the UEFI data, if Windows startup repair can't fix it, what options do I have?
The "startup repair" Macrium offers is garbage and won't even load, so while I have all my data, I don't have an OS...
I appreciate any insights!
- 10 years later and I've finally upgraded from 16GB to 32GB of ram
I am happy I could still get it in red 😋
Original RAM was Ballistix Sport LT 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR4 2400 MT/s (PC4-19200), while my new sticks are TeamGroup T-FORCE VULCAN Z 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 3600MHz CL18.
- Okay fam, I'm done with lag. What GPUs will give me buttery smooth VR performance?
I've had my index for a year or two now, I've got both desktop and my beefy AF laptop that I play it on, but both are still super janky. The laptop is actually better for it believe it or not but I still get some hiccups here and there.
I know my bottleneck on the desktop is my GPU, CPU is ready for anything I can pair it with, what's a good one that will never let me see a frame drop again?
Come on I know you guys have suggestions
Edit: since you're all asking here's a list I made some time ago with most of my parts
Ignore the storage you see, i have like 2nvme drives and several SSD's that I didn't list

- Any help with figuring out airflow options?
Hi! I currently have this build using the GT502 case.
I just recently got 3 more case fans. Previously it was set up like this: !
I think that for some reason the temps got worse and the PC much louder. It might just be buyer's remorse but I got more fans so that they could use less RPM and be quieter, but I feel like the complete opposite has happened.
Can I change anything about this layout to optimise airflow? I was thinking of maybe switching the side panel fans to exhaust? That might starve the CPU cooler, though...
Maybe I'm just imagining things and I just need to perform exact tests to figure it out. What do you use for testing airflow effectiveness?
UPDATE: The issue was weirder than I would've thought. The bottom 3 fans are controlled by one motherboard channel using a PWM splitter cable. The rear and side panel fans are the same - one channel for all 3. Previously I had just the rear exhaust plugged in to a single channel but now it's plugged into the splitter.
Apparently the order of the fans in the splitter is VERY important. I changed it so that the rear fan is the first in the splitter and that instantly fixed the issue. ¯\\\(ツ)\/¯
- Best current/last gen gpu for Linux compatibility?
I know Nvidia has a reputation for being bad with Linux. Is it better now? And most of all, what would be the best GPU for modern gaming on Linux (any distro)?
- Laptop opinions? (considering Asus TUF lineup)
I'm currently on an MSI GF65 Thin 9SEXR. It has a 9th gen core i5, 8GB RAM, and a geforce rtx2060 graphics card. While it's been a great daily driver for several years now, it's definitely starting to show it's age with newer games and such.
I've currently got my eyes on the ASUS TUF series of laptops, because they seem like pretty decent quality. The chassis design seems more intuitive with where the ports are located, and other small details that make ease of use a priority. I like that it has a numberpad as well, and I'd consider this one of my necessities going forward.
My main uses will be moderate gaming, 3D design, and general browsing/productivity. I'd also like to dump windows for Linux as well, but I'm not entirely sure that I'm ready to make that jump yet. I've got very minimal experience with alternative operating systems to windows.
I don't know much about AMD's hardware, so I'm not sure how the designations compare to what I currently have. If anyone could give me an easy rundown to get me up to date I'd appreciate it too.

- Question on large amounts of RAM and memory training.
Total that got cut of there was £3,309. Which to be fair given what it allows me to do now will mean it should pay for itself within a couple of years worst case.
Hey all, thanks for all your replies to my previous post about the beefy machine for test renders, i am delighted to say i have gone ahead and ordered the machine after switching the gpu to a 4080 super, and getting a slighty better power supply.
I have also decided to go ahead and double the RAM to 192GB while they are still builing it. But i am getting concerned about cold boots and memory training.
How often does memory training happen? Is it every cold boot? Every manual reset?
The machine will be crashing alot, its just the nature of pushing them hard, and i dont want to be stuck waiting with that horrible feeling of if it will ever even boot at all, the next time i push the render quality a little too high in 3DSMax.
Would greatly appreciate some feedback on this from someone with experience of machines that have alot of RAM.
- I think I may need a CPU upgrade in the future
To achieve this
feetfeat, I am rendering a Project in Davinci Resolve, while compressing two other videos with Handbrake.I was kind of hoping for 100% GPU Utilization, but my CPU has been at 100% utilization for the last 10 min, so I think she's toasty enough.
- Long post and story about a shitpost
So your probably reading this thinking, OK its a PC same old stuff. Well here is a long story.
so about a year ago myself and 2 friends would get together on weekends, my friend who we will call ash. Owns a Xbox One S, so we all were hanging out on Friday night the weekly ritual , and we got tired of playing UNO. so we Decided to play the Xbox we played about every game and it was starting to get quite dry on selection. Ash read off many games from the roster, to which just sounded repetitive, So at this point we all kinda agree there wasn't a game we wanted to play. So we checked out the Microsoft store, this was around Christmas so games were on "Sale". More like for sale not on sale, every game was just so expensive compared to Steam at this point lightning struck me. what if i built a PC to use as a console, so the following day after the rather dull Friday night. I went onto the apocalyptic wasteland that was Facebook marketplace, full of tweakers and entitled Karrens. To which i found a i5-2500 motherboard CPU combo, Sweet i thought now i just need a few more parts. I used a 550W Bronze PSU, bought some used ddr3 ram from eBay as-well as a 1tb ssd and had a rx570 laying around. All i then needed was a case, Now im a cheapskate and wanted a nice case but couldn't feel the need to buy one. So i went to a junkyard and found some recently thrown away office PC case. however the case was to bland to me, so i made the joke of its not an Xbox its a Ybox when myself and the boys hung out. So i attempted to do a paint job the PC case, ! which wasn't a Picasso but it started to rain and i was to lazy to redo it. So the other thing i wanted this PC case to have was a handle, so i took a piece of 6061 extruded aluminum and some bolts and nuts that i bought at a flea market and made my handle. Originally the nut could fit with the PSU in but the bench grinder fixed that.
I was rather giddy at this point, as it is now time for the OS. I am a real big fan of Linux as i run Nix-OS on my main system, so i decided to use Chimera. i unveiled the Ybox to the boys and we play many many cheaper steam games that are rather fun. Eventually Chimera felt rather closed because there wasn't a traditional package manager. I installed Ublue Bazzite (i stole the idea from action retro trash can mac video). We played on the Ybox for many many months and eventually i talked my friends into building PC's and they went with some pretty good specs. ryzen 7 5800x, 6900xt, i7 12th gen NVIDIA 4050. so we had LAN partys playing lots of games. The Ybox was pretty good for the 300ish dollars i had in it, however i wanted something that looked nicer and could run higher end games. as alot of the time when we would group buy games my PC was the biggest qualm.
So the Ybox Pro was born, it is my tote-able gaming/VR-rig. I built it using a machinist x99 motherboard with a 8 core Intel Xeon E5-1680 V2. 16Gb of ram and a junky vega 56 bios flashed vega 64 graphics card. It Runs VR great games look awesome. However one design choice i did not like about the case i bought was a glass side panel. Now for alot of people they really like tempered glass however i am always paranoid about the glass breaking in transit. And i bought a 120mm thermal take AIO which i couldn't find a good mounting place for. it was rather going to be at the bottom of the case or mounted sketchily on the roof of the case. So i have a side business where i have a Omtech 60Watt C-02 laser and a little bit of an engineer background. and decided to engineer a wood side panel which would have a mount for the AIO and look nice. I laser cut the side panel out of cherry paneling and stained it. I am very happy with the end result.
also i plan to like the cheap case i bought and a thingiverse/printables file for the side panel if anybody want to replicate my build.

- Digital artist here, need help deciding on a beefy machine config, but i'm a little rusty on the IT side of things.
So, my budget is 3KGBP, my use case is i do 3d modelling work (have done for 25years now), and would like a better machine that i can do (light) GPU render tests on. It will likely also do short (few days) runs of CPU rendering too.
Naturally, no amount of horsepower or RAM is ever really enough for 3D rendering, but this is the best config i could come up with within my budget.
As far as gaming goes, since i only turned to that recently (more and more as i get older it looks like), i only own 3 games: KSP2, Cities Skylines II, and X4 Foundations (so far), but its not a primary concern for this machine, just a nice-to-have.
Now i know, i am about to be told i sould go with AMD, perhaps the 7900 X3D?
Main reason im going with intel is i sometimes use older windows software, which i have had issues with AMD (mostly very niche 3DSMax Plugin stuff), but that was some time ago now, but i am very fearful of that.
I wont be overclocking it, as i need it to be stable, and will likely be doubling that 96GB of RAM in a couple of months, and no, it still wont be enough :(
I would be greatful for any advice, especially on the AMD side of things.
- DisplayPort to Hdmi vs DisplayPort to Dvi?
Hey folks, I've got two 1920x1080 monitors that are connected to my PC (with a 1070TI) via DP->HDMI cables. I've recently purchased a Dock (DELL wd22tb4) for my work laptop and want to use the same monitors. My monitors have hdmi and dvi inputs (let's ignore the vga).
Since the dock has DP outputs as well, I can either get a pair of DP->DVI cables and connect the dock via them or I can swap them with the current hdmi ones (so the dock gets hdmi and the pc gets dvi).
Would either approach be better? I use the pc for occasional gaming, but 1920@60hz is my cap (until a very expensive pc upgrade), so I don't need anything more for the near future.
- Is raytracing quality same in Nvidia and AMD?
Aside from fps, is there any difference in quality of raytracing in Nvidia and AMD or is it the same(like they say that DLSS is better than FSR)?

"Spaceship" Mk. II - AMD Ryzen 7 5700G, Asus ROG Z11 Mini ITX Tower
Never built a PC before, but thought it was a good time to get started on it!
I already got the tower, CPU and motherboard. Someone was getting rid of that specific tower and they wanted it gone - it was basically free! (aka a glorified curbalert)
I chose that CPU cause I don't want to spend money on a GPU, yet. Not looking yet into AAA gaming, at most I'll start with my Steam indie backlog 😁
Thanks!

- How would you go for a 500-600€ build able to handle 2023-2024 gaming standards
I know this is a low budget •_•"
Where would you go cheap?
What part should be bought new?
For which part is dumpster diving okay'ish?
- Why does BIOS suck?
This is a bit of a mea culpa from me.
In 2022 I started the build of my dream PC. i9 13900k, 2 TB M.2 drive, 32 GB of 5200 DDR5 ram.
...and a 6600XT.
Now at the time it was all I could afford. I just wanted something that would run most games decently. nothing earth shattering but could do the heavy lifting i needed it to. I planned to upgrade later down the road.
For most games it was (and still is) perfectly fine. It ran most of my 100+ game library with no complaints from me.
But there was one game. Arma 3.
Now anyone who knows Arma 3 will readily admit it is a horribly optimized mess. This games drinks ram and chews up GPU's like they're candy.
And my 6600XT was crushed underneath it's massive weight.
Now the problem for me is at the time I was fanatical about the game. It was pretty much the only game I played constantly. I still play it to this day, just not as much.
I would get stutters, massive frame drops and tons of crashes all centered around not enough GPU ram. (the 6600Xt only has 8) I HATED this card and would loudly complain on every forum every time someone would mention it. I sneered at AMD and desperately wanted to go Nvidia.
problem was i still couldn't afford to upgrade.
But I finally had it last month and so I saved up and bought...
An Intel ARC A770.
But it worked. frame rates went up, crashes pretty much disappeared and and all was good in the world.
At this point I know you (probably) are screaming "Well what the fuck does this has to do with BIOS!?
well let me explain. You see I also wanted a much better m.2 drive so I bought a WD Black SN850X.
but while I was installing the NVME drive I noticed that my PCIe slot was set to gen3 X8. Not gen4 X16.
This solved everything. I went back to my 6600XT as I was having driver issues with the ARC card. and now when I play Arma 3 it runs much smoother. It still crashes because honestly the game needs a minimum of 16 GB of memory on a video card to run (sort of) fairly smoothly, but frames went up, stutters pretty much disappeared and the 1% lows were much more less noticeable.
All because I missed a BIOS setting.
So WHY? why is BIOS still so troublesome? why can't it detect cards and automatically set the proper settings by itself?
WHY!?
Anyways, that's all I have to say about that.
