  • I may have found something worse than the calves cramping post (CW for intense liberal cringe)
  • This kind of thing is what has led me to the conclusion that one of the most important aspects of political consciousness is the realization that politicians aren't people. They literally need to be dehumanized as a class in order for anything productive to happen. Functionally, they are not people to us, they are obstacles or vehicles. Without knowing this in your bones you will be Charlie Brown, they will be Lucy, and a football you never shall kick.

  • Google has illegal monopoly over internet search, US judge rules
  • See, this is why the law is fundamentally useless and lawyers need to be [redacted]

I figured this shit out without even thinking about it, literally, you could have asked me this 20 years ago and I'd just be like yea

  • Rant: I had to go to the hospital and got stuck with an exorbitant bill.
  • What a nightmare. I'm really sorry that this happened to you.

Can you say more about not paying that bill? I've already had run ins with American healthcare, with comparable outcomes, and I don't understand the consequences of not paying the bill.

  • I hate Josh Shapiro so much
  • Yeah I've seen that reported by Scahill's new outfit Dropsite News (which btw seems good so far, I'm a free subscriber and I've already gotten like 4 very good articles from Scahill on middle east politics in the last ~2 weeks).

  • I am going to need general anesthesia for a surgery, and am unfortunately aware of the fact that a significant percentage of people experience pain and conscious paralysis under it. What do I do?
  • Comrade, others have had good responses already so I won't try to give you facts/arguments, I don't know that much about the subject anyway. But I'll tell you about my experiences because they were all good, and hopefully positive thoughts will put your mind at ease.

I was in a very bad accident once where I was knocked unconscious in a brutal manner (think traumatic brain injury). And let me tell you, it is one of nature's great mercies that we are programmed such that I can't remember that accident at all. Not one bit. Not like going to sleep, just complete, utter blackness with nothing in the void. Perfect unconsciousness. I've also been anesthetized a few times and that's how I'd describe every one of those experiences: perfect unconsciousness with absolutely nothing registering at all. It isn't like sleep, it is something blessedly less active. I know it sounds weird to say but I'm very pro-anesthesia. We can't deny that things can go wrong, but this is one of those things like plane crashes - we fixate on what goes wrong (I say this as a nervous flier). Many more things go right. Hang in there!

  • I don't know much about this, but I've heard something anecdotal via radio war nerd that is related. The war nerd used to live in East Timor, not long after the genocide there, and he happened to witness a huge transition in the birth rate. Apparently the native population had a high birth rate during and immediately following the genocidal period which rapidly fell off not long afterwards. It's an interesting phenomenon that I haven't heard an anthropological explanation/discussion of, but perhaps there is a kind of communal response to this acute collective trauma that is inflicted on some populations.

Perhaps it is better to discuss the Palestinian population by age demographic rather than just the number of Palestinians. My understanding was that prior to 10/7 approximately half of the Gaza strip's population was 18 or younger. No doubt some of that is explained by a reduced life expectancy for Gazans but there also must be a decent number of children being born.
