Victory lap!
  • I love this idea! I have videos of my grandparents where my dad interviews them about their lives. And then one of my dad when we interviewed him about his life after he was diagnosed with cancer. Can’t really bear to watch that one but some day I should save them online somewhere. I like the idea of them being part of an archive and part of searchable history fo future generations

  • Embarassing(?) confession
  • Every time our dryer is done my husband or I exclaim “I won!!”, it sounds like we just won a big prize. The microwave fucking SCREAMS at me, I don’t know what his deal is

  • Have you ever, given someone a major step up in life, been a mentor, and measurably altered the trajectory of their life for the better?
  • I think once he got back on his feet you probably reminded him (through no fault of your own obviously) of that horrible painful time in his life and it may have just been too unbearable to be around you. And he may not have even made that as a conscious decision. Still it’s completely unfair to you and you didn’t deserve that. Your value in being a good person in this world is appreciated, at least by an internet stranger :)

  • Advice needed on buying a personal boat
  • Boat owner here and grew up boating. Mine and my husband’s happiest place is being on the water on our boat. BUT it is expensive and there are a lot of considerations and you very much need to know how to properly operate one and know the rules of the water. For example, docking is a skill in many conditions, it’s way harder than it looks, make sure you understand right of way, constant bearing decreasing range (if a boat looks like it is in the same spot relative to your position but it keeps getting bigger and bigger you’re on a collision course), know how channel markers work (red right returning), know how to read marine maps and understand tides and how much water your boat draws so you never run aground, where are you going to keep your boat-dry slip/wet slip/boat house storage and if it’s dry storage you need a trailer for the boat and a car (truck) that can pull the weight of the boat and the trailer, then you need to learn how to launch a boat (this is just comical to watch people try, me included, I don’t even try). Dock space is expensive, fuel is expensive, maintenance is expensive. Buy used but ask how many hours the boat and engine have on it, don’t just rely on the age. And ask about maintenance history. Know that engines are WAY more expensive than you would think. And please please please take a boat safety course and get your license. If there’s any way you can be on and around other people’s boats and just watch and ask questions for a while I would highly recommend that! Two biggest things- pay attention to the weather and always put the plug in before you launch the boat!!

    God speed friend

  • Men, are you physically affectionate with other male friends? (eg, hugging, snuggling, playful wrestling, etc). If you aren't, do you wish it was more socially acceptable if it isn't in your culture?
  • I was just watching Love Island (don’t judge) and noticed two of the guys who are very good friends were sitting with their legs sort of crossed together. Like the way girls who are close friends would. It stuck out because you don’t really see that much but I was like hey that’s pretty cool, kinda more masculine (at least from my girl perspective) than guys that are all afraid to touch each other

  • Art is in the AI of the beholder

Just received the photos of a sewer scope inspection for a client and the AI series of description fails gave me a giggle

Hi I'm pretty bored and just wanna talk or make friends with some online randos feel free to DM .
  • For me the problematic thing here is the insinuation that having a distinct hobby specific passion is what makes us interesting as human beings, that somehow human connection is predicated on passion and carved out hobbies. Not all of us have energy or time or just general mental capacity or desire to take on a passion project or dive into a hobby. I have family, friends, dogs, work, boating, biking, dog rescue, cheese, these are all a part of what make me but nothing I want to join a club over or dedicate any more time to than I already do. Some days are just about living and being. I can still be fun and funny and compassionate and interesting to talk to without having to develop and showcase a specific passion. Anywho

  • Lemmy is like a public library of the internet: it's one of the few places where you can exist without the expectation of paying either through watching ads or through direct payments
  • Well now I just looked up the documentary and put it on! Whatever this faction is I don’t think it’s representative of the whole. The ones near me I think have always embodied peacefulness. The temple has its doors open regularly, I’ve never really walked in and looked around but it would be interesting. It’s also in an area that’s really blown up in value since they bought it, worth many millions today. I’m sure they’ve been offered buyouts by developers but clearly didn’t accept any if so. Just goes to show it’s not about the money for them!

  • Found this surveillance system on my afternoon bike ride

The cameras wrapped around the tree, some very cool old school cameras too. Really blended in fun art piece, nearly missed it

When a friend kindly asks if you need anything transported over his 20 hour drive back home you must mess with them!

There is no bearded dragon but now I know I have a friend willing to transport one across state lines with no questions asked

How can I filter my feed to only show posts that are in English?

Just the title, if I’m looking at “All” I have to scroll past a lot of posts in other languages that I can’t read and I have t been able to find language as a filter option. Thanks!

Why would Reddit push users away from their app shortly before announcing API changes?

I can’t wrap my head around this, it seems so bizarre. The only reason I’m here now is because I joined Apollo right after Reddit changed its app to remove the sort by rising feature. It completely changed my experience on the app for the worse and I sought out an alternative, and I know I’m not the only one that had this complaint. I was a faithful Reddit user/poster on the official app for 6 years until just a few months ago. Why would they make their app less user friendly a few months before announcing the crazy API changes. They drove me away from their app and then drove me away from the site altogether.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? It just makes no sense to me
