If they were really cynical, they could try to get the US sucked into a quagmire that then the Trump admin would take the political heat for, and then capitalize on that to win elections in '26 and '28.

Someone needs to sort this out for me, I definitely need a primer on what is going on in Syria. The US attacks Iran linked groups, but is also "part of a coalition effort against Islamic State militants in the region". There is a triangle of conflict here I need to unravel.
