I tried several models, several prompts, and the results have been surprisingly bizarre. I also was surprised there is no JR Bob Dobbs recognition. All I wanted was a classic 1950's TV salesman.
This is the closest I got. Most look like vape pens....

You are right! It hadn't occurred to me that this wouldn't work. I need to pull the wool over my own eyes. A little frop will help too.
Try one of these specific types of pipes. Maybe it will take a prompt with an exact type?
Any updates on this? Did someone try?

Edit: Actually, I think that's it. AIs have been trained on this picture and now think that's not what a pipe is.

None of my models can make a pipe smoker. I tried batching ~200 images and got nothing useful.
could try and photoshop one over + img2img/inpaint to smooth it out (maybe reverse mask to avoid it changing the pipe too much?)
