Out of the loop
- What really happened with Kyler Efinger, (the guy that died inside a jet engine)?
News sources appear to be lying in the worst scenario, or distorting and confusing you, in the best scenario ..
Security footage on YouTube shows him illegally approaching a plane that was getting started to move on the runway.. then cuts for some mysterious secret reason… The plane was only “taxxiing” (slowly turning itself) on the tarmac…
People claim to be close to the incident say he was sucked in the turbines (not “snuck in”).. others say he was sucked in but wasn’t chopped because a protruding part stopped his body from getting deeper..Fact we know for sure is he died in the end..
So i am only concerned by one thing, that even AI cannot give me a straight answer.. Why didn’t the pilots stop the engine when they saw him?
- What happened with Starfield?
I was only caught up with the news to its release date and didnt bother to check on it since then. I don't plan to play it, but rather to check on the headlines and reviews surrounding it since I've heard some negative comments about the game. I know about the recent trends of the gaming industry but I was kinda hoping for Starfield to be better since I really dig the concept of open world and space exploration games.
- Ecosia and DuckDuckGo seem to be down. What is going on?
[Update: It seems to have been fixed now]
- [ANSWERED] Bears?
What's up with the bear memes?

- Why is the video game industry in crisis?
I keep hearing about layoffs, studios being closed and how the industry is troubled. Are companies losing money and sales are poor, or is it the same as Google and other companies laying off people just to pump their stock price and make money despite profitability?
- What is the up with the beef between Drake and Kendrick Lamar? And what about J. Cole?
I know they're posting diss tracks against each other, but I'm not sure why? What made this start? And how was J. Cole involved? And how has this feud evolved so far?
I feel so out of the loop on this one! All I see is reaction images of the songs and Kendrick destroying Drake, but without the context of why they were posted, I'm still confused.
- Why am I seeing all these Kevin and home alone related memes?
Is related to the F1 guy? Or the AIR bnb dog?
- Why do all those US universities have dealings with Israel?
All those student protests on the US seem to be about stopping their universities from supporting the Israel government. But supporting a foreign government is not a normal thing for a university to do, why do they do it?
Is there some educational or research resource they get?
- What's the deal with Isreal vs. Palestine side taking in the West?
I feel like I've been kind of in the loop for most of the headlines regarding this confrontation. Yet somehow I can't find it within myself to actually care about either side. It seems like both are lead by genocidal parties, hell bent on indoctrinating their populace into hating the other side. Yet at the same time people are able to discern which state is the good one. And some going so far as to believe that one state might even be right over the other.
So far from what I've read and heard, it seems that overall Isreal is just more successful militarily and is encroaching on Palestinian land, and is exhibiting control over some of it. Is that the reason why one might support Palestine? Is it the fact that Isreal has more direct power in the region and thus can easily execute its will a problematic issue for some? From what I can see, both sides have caused massive civilian casualties and neither side wants a two state solution, so neither of those reasons can be a contributing factor to side picking, right? That being said, I can't find a reason for supporting Isreal, so does Palestine win out by default? But what of the people that support Isreal, do they do that purely because they're an American ally? Is any of this side taking have anything to do with the insertion of Jews into the region? What is expected to be done outside of a two state solution or genocide by those taking sides?
I have a lot of questions, and I obviously don't expect all of them to be answered in a single post. So maybe focusing on the elements you're highly informed on would be helpful and then I can kind of piece together the details. Thank you in advance!
- What's the draw of watching/following streamers?
I've watched some here and there, but having to try to catch them when they stream has put me too much in the mind of old tv and catching shows when they air. Watching the recording afterward is maybe good for some white noise, but it's clearly not the intended experience I think.
- Why is brawl allowed in NHL?
I'm not a hockey fan, so don't know anything about the players or even team names. But i just saw i trending. Maybe these 2 teams are rivals, but im wondering why the refs are allowing them to fight. Unlike the NBA, refs always get into the middle to stop any punches but NHL is different. Its not cool for kids to watch, but I'm entertained LOL
- Arch Linux is suddenly the butt of a lot of memes?
Over the past couple of weeks, I've seen a lot of content that's ripping on Arch Linux, from pictures of stickers being removed from laptops, to comments about it having a lot of bloat or frustrating package management. Was there a change to their policies, strategies, or distro that has turned this once proud vessel into a floating psycho ward?
- What is going on with golf courses being shit down?
There has been several conservative memes about golf courses going away or liberals taking them away. Did I miss some news about that?
- Why do people chain post on microblogging platforms rather than link to a blog post?
cross-posted from: https://lemm.ee/post/26108835
> I'll read long posts in either format, but the fragmented format of chained microblog posts, or threads, is mildly distracting at times.
- What's up with all the layoffs in the technology sector, especially in the gaming industry?
Sony announced a ton of layoffs recently, at the same time they announced they will not be releasing any major titles until 2025. Don't they need staff to make stuff? doesn't every company? Why all the sudden layoffs, it just doesn't make sense to me, what am I missing?
- Why are people posting sinks on the syncforlemmy community ?
Today I opened up lemmy and noticed a bunch of posts about sinks on that community
- Why Are People Hating on Julian Assange?
I thought he was like one of the most important whistleblowers of our time exposing war crimes and shit. Some of you don't wanna see him live another day, why is that?
- All Taylor swift plane posts?
I see many Taylor swift posts with plane. Plane out of plane and more plane out of plane. Walking dog in plane, why so much plane?
- So...is the Writers' Guild strike over?
I'm watching a new show that is clearly new with new writing and it just occurred to me, that some presumably eager well-paid writer is writing all this shit, so ...is the beef over?
- What's the hype with Stanley cups?
I work from home and drink from mugs and I don't tiktok, so this whole trendy cup thing is really confusing me.
Do they uncurse bad water or something?
- What about this 'rule' thing in post titles?
Honestly I don't know if it's something Lemmy-only, but I see many post titles ending with the world rule for no apparent reason
- What's the deal with mamamax?
I saw a video pop up in my recommends in which someone goes off on him and now I'm interested. mamamax infirmux.
- What's going on with Hunter Biden?
A couple months ago the findings against Hunter Biden were nothing, not even worth taking to court, only under GOP pressure did the Trump appointed prosecutor take it to court. Now it seems like a big deal and 17 years (max). What happened? Why the change? Was new evidence found?
- What's going on with F-Droid Board of Directors and "Hans" ?
Sorry, living under a rock recently. Can someone ELI5 this for me? Thanks !
- What is the progress of French pension reform protest?
I don’t see news on the gov backing out, and the protest isn’t escalating further either. No more action almost always mean gov wins
So what’s going on with the protest now?
- Who is Henry Kissinger?
As the title says, who is Henry Kissinger?
I read this from Wikipedia:
"Kissinger pioneered the policy of détente with the Soviet Union, orchestrated an opening of relations with China, engaged in what became known as shuttle diplomacy in the Middle East to end the Yom Kippur War, and negotiated the Paris Peace Accords, which ended American involvement in the Vietnam War. He has also been associated with controversial policies, such as the U.S. bombing of Cambodia during the Vietnam War, U.S. involvement in the 1973 Chilean military coup, a "green light" to Argentina's military junta for their Dirty War, and U.S. support for Pakistan during the Bangladesh Liberation War despite a genocide being perpetrated by Pakistan."
It sounds like he was a bad guy, but I know there's more to the story than that with the collective hate I see for him here on Lemmy.
- Noticing lots of new users, did something happen?
I've noticed quite a lot of new accounts popping up recently, wondering if something new happened over at Orange Alien HQ or maybe is this just normal growth?
- What's going on with OpenAI?
I see news posts about the CEO being fired, all the staff threatening to leave, then the CEO being rehired and the board being fired. What the heck is this all about??
- What's contributed to more folks making podcasts?
I know they've been around for ages now, but it feels like in the past few years there's been an increasing amount of people making them and trying to start little gigs/businesses of making them.
What's influenced or contributed to this if it's been an actual increase?
- can someone explain skibidi toilet please?
I keep seeing it on my random feed suggestions and this is using NewPipe, so it has nothing to do with my actual YouTube activity (I think. Nothing there is stuff I'm interested in, with very few exceptions). So I've ignored it first, then I watched like two and was super confused. Wtf. These videos have millions of views and I don't even understand the name or what's the appeal.
- She goes to another college?
What's this line attached to many instances where people refer to someone's girlfriend who you wouldn't know because she goes to a different college?
- How can the opposition party form a government in Poland if the current rulinf party is projected to win more votes?
I do not understand. Are they planning to form a coalition?
