Lineage OS
- How do I start maintaining a device?
I have a Nothing Phone 1 but unfortunately, no one's currently maintaining it. I was thinking of doing it myself but I don't really know where to start. Would be great if you could give me some pointers.

- Is there a good starting guide to build LOS for an unsupported phone?
I have a realme 5 Pro. Honestly, the current state of officially and unofficially supported custom ROM for rmx1971 suck. PixelExperience was the last decent half-decent ROM for my device - it had some battery issues. DerpFest, crDroid and EvolutionX are all terrible for me - because I never wanted those "fancy" settings in the first place.
Right now, I'm on DerpFest, and honestly, it's terrible. The desktop and wallpaper engine is broken, the theming is all over the place and some of the contents are out of the screen. Honestly, I want something that is as close to the stock ROM, is lightweight, and gives life to older devices. LOS seems to be a good ROM, at least from the YouTube videos I've seen.
How should I go about creating a build for my device? And what should I care about while building? And how can I make my build official later on? What about the kernel? Can it be updated beyond the version that's it at right now?

- No easy Network Location in LineageOS
Although GPS or hardware based location does work on LineageOS, it seems there is no easy way to get software based Network Location officially on LineageOS due to UnifiedNLP getting deprecated and merged to GMS Core. (Also see this post)
After discussing with community and my own research, there are 2 ways to get it on LineageOS-
- Either get LineageOS for MicroG. Problem with that being it is not official.
- Or get some older version of UnifiedNLP with MinMicroG (also an older version) or some other 3rd party installer.
Both of these are complicated and risky (as flashing can brick a phone) processes for something that is software based and is only half part of location services as GPS still works, meaning imo, you aren't getting your effort's worth. Especially noobs.
This post is an upto date guide for future users (as not many might get difference between GPS and Network Location) while also inviting suggestions for older users on how they dealt with the problem.

Hello, yesterday I installed LineageOS 21 on my phone. It seems like everything is working fine, except that when I open a video with the official YouTube app or using ReVanced, after a few seconds, the video image freezes, but the audio continues. Does this happen to anyone else? Is there a solution? In the meantime, I'm using Tubular, and it works fine. Thank you

>Happy New Year! DivestOS and the Divested projects as they currently stand are ultimately unsustainable. My goal for 2023 was to acquire a grant to continue my work, I was unsuccessful. Today I am announcing a fundraiser of raising $12,000 USD by end of February. It may be a stretch to ask, but I hope you all have found sufficient value in my work to keep these projects going. If it is unsuccessful I will switch to a full-time job and the Divested projects will take a backseat. To those who have donated, I truly appreciate your support. Thank you - Tavi.

- How do push notifications work on Lineage?
I've heard and read recently about a warrant that shows that the US government is monitoring push notifications on iOS and Android. This is possible because push notifications mostly work remotely, using "push notification post office" servers at Apple and Google.
I am aware that certain apps; such as Threema, Signal, Proton, Tuta, and others; use their own servers for push, but not all apps will do this. So, as a deGoogled operating system, how exactly does LineageOS handle push notifications?

- android system intelligence app coming with lineageos on pixel 4a 5g
I just noticed there's an app installed on a recently acquired pixel 4a 5g, "android system intelligence", which I never found installed on other phones like moto or xiaomi ones.
It also had by default a bunch of permissions granted, which I removes, and only left it with notifications.
Is this a system app I should leave working with more permissions? Should I disable it instead (if possible, I didn't try)?
Is it required for an android system proper functionality? Is it bad to remove all permissions except by the notifications one? Does this damage functionality?
I'm just suspecting about an "android intelligence" thing.
What have others done about it?
- Upgrades on pixel 4a 5g (bramble)
Hi !
I recently got a pixel 4a 5g (bramble), and when installing, I noticed there's a difference with respect other phones I've installed lineageos on, like motorola, xiomi redmi 4x (discontinued) and others.
On this pixel, and probably others, one needs to flash a boot.img, a dtbo.img and a vendor_boot.img, before sideloading lineageos. The vendor_boot.img is supposed to be the equivalent to the recovery.img.
On other phones there's only a recovery.img to flash, prior to sideloading lineageos.
Now, on this pixel majore version upgrades I see documented only the sideload of lineageos. For other phones I usually upgrade both, the recovery.img and then sideload the new major version of lineage. So not sure if I should then should flash all images, boot, dtbo and vendor_boot, when upgrading on major versions. I guess I could, but I'm wondering.
Moreover, even on same major OTA upgrades, I'm wondering what gets upgraded, if I have selected OTA upgrades to also upgrade recovery image, would it just upgrade the vendor_boot one, or would it flash all other images?
It's just that it involves flashing several other images, not matching the ones for other phones, :)
Thanks !
- Backup phone apps and data with Seedvault (I think I've solved this)kb.above.im Backup phone apps and data with Seedvault
Seedvault is a system in-built backup service, that allows you to back up most of your phone's apps and data. This is a great way to keep your data secure and also to migrate to a different device with the same operating system. Here we are going to walk you
Okay, I have a Google Pixel 4a with LineageOS (sunfish). I followed the instructions given at this site, and created a Seedvault backup.
I had my phone plugged into my laptop via USB, and transfer of files for USB was enabled; so, the laptop could access the phone's files via MTP. However, this was not seen as an option for where the backup was to be created (IE, it did not give the option to create the backup on the hard drive of the laptop via a file transfer with MTP). So, I created it on the phone.
I have since copied that file to my laptop. Specifically, I copied the backup file which was created, that being .SeedVaultAndroidBackup, to my laptop. My laptop runs Debian Linux.
So, a few questions:
1.) will I be able to restore from the backup file, .SeedVaultAndroidBackup, that exists on my laptop? Or will this not work, given that it wasn't originally created there?
2.) if the answer to (1.) is "yes", then will I be able to delete the backup that was made on my phone?
3.) is there a way to create a backup with Seedvault specifically on my laptop, rather than copying the created backup file afterword? I wonder if there was a setting with USB transfer (MTP) that could be adjusted (IE, making the laptop the focus rather than the phone).
- How do LineageOS security updates work when the official updates from Google cease?support.google.com Learn when you'll get software updates on Google Pixel phones - Pixel Phone Help
Below are software update guarantees for Pixel phones. If you have another Android device, contact your manufacturer or carrier for update info. If you have a Nexus device,
I recently bought a Google Pixel 4a. The link from the title outlines that security updates from Google will soon be ending for the Pixel 4a (though there was a surprise update in November, but no further updates are expected).
Yet, in spite of that, I assume that LineageOS security updates will continue for this phone, since for a variety of other older phones they have continued. But, I wonder, how will this be achieved? Is there information on how LineageOS creates and releases security updates for the devices that it supports?

- In the same way that security updates install new system files but preserve the settings of the user account, can the settings of a user account be maintained if replacing Android with LineageOS?
Hello. My main question is covered in the title of this post.
I have experience with installing LineageOS, and currently have it on a Fairphone 2. However, this question is pertaining to a friend who has a Google Pixel 3 that is not working properly. It frequently shuts shuts off and reboots after being turned on. She often needs to hold the power button to be able to read texts without it going blank and rebooting. I suggested she may need to free up some space, so she deleted some video files from it, and there is sufficient space now, but this made no difference.
So, as outlined in the title, I'm wondering if a LineageOS can be installed while preserving her user files -- similar to installing a different Linux distribution on a computer that has a separate /home partition (IE, preserving the home partition). Is this possible on an Android phone such as the Pixel 3?
- Android Auto
I currently use an OnePlus 9 Pro and want to switch to LineageOS.

- Installing LOS 20 on a Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite that's Knox Locked
so I found a Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite Wifi, one of the few tablets that have official LOS support. the specs aren't too bad either, 10" 2000x1200 screen, 4/64GB, 7000 mAh battery (remains to be seen in what condition); for $120 with some shitty cover/stand and dubious charger, one hell of a deal. only problem is, it can't be reset or it'll lock itself.
thought on passing, but the dude assures me it's not stolen as he has a bunch of these, so most likely scenario is some corporate client dumped these and upgraded to newest and best without unenrolling them from this knox bullshit. either that or there's a crew ripping exclusively gta4xlwifis all over Germany.
although I can endure Samsung's OneUI for basic shit, I happen to know a little bit about Android, bootloaders and stuff and I'm fairly confident I can wipe this crap and install LOS without issues. what is the saying, a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing? so let's start.
first off, LOS instructions say you gotta have the latest firmware on the device. this one's on Android 11, so launch software update. update, reboot, hold breath - will it lock itself, annnd... booted just fine, we're done!
except, no we're not. inspecting software properties shows it's on A12 and the update process is already downloading another package. current LOS ROM is 20/A13, so we need A13 and latest patches, looks like it's gonna take a while.
well we're finally done. all in all, FIVE different upgrades, one after another, and then each does some "optimising" shit, took hours. dios mio, you couldn't just ship a cumulative update, it had to be piecemeal?
anyhoo, tried each of the versions for a couple of minutes - sluggish, stuttering, occasional single-digit fps animations, boatloads of G and S services running in the background, each one is sending you Super Important Notifications All The Time, can't wait to be rid of this crap.
alright, A13 and latest patches in the house. now comes the step I'm dreading - according to LOS instructions, I have to boot in download (proprietary fastboot) mode where I should unlock bootloader and thus erase user data. this equates to doing a factory reset which, according to the seller, should lock the device. although I've tried to educate myself on what this knox business actually is, I've come up short (chip busts a fuse when tripped, what?!?) so in lieu of succinct info I guess I'm learning by first-hand experience.
so, power off, disconnect USB cable. press both volume keys and connect the USB cable. one disgusting turquoise screen appears, instructing you to press vol up once for download mode or to longpress vol up for device unlock; not what LOS instructions say.
so press volume up for a couple of seconds and the screen asks for confirmation you really wanna unlock it, calls you a bad person and an even worse user but it acknowledges your intention. reboot and... it stays for eons on the samsung loading screen. I'm fucked, right?
eventually, the system boots up, says it's knox locked and wants access to the wifi. it connects and the onboarding process begins. I've tapped "Skip" everywhere I was allowed and eventually the desktop appears! we're off to settings, re-enable developer mode, USB debugging and check the unlock bootloader switch is on. then we have to turn off this bixby whatever-the-fuck-this-is popping up when we wanna shut the tablet down.
alright, tablet is off, disconnect cable. press both vol keys and connect the USB cable. ugly screen appears. this time, press vol up once and we're in download mode.
heimdall detect
and... not detected. wtf.different USB port?that works, flash successful! edit: turns out, you have to disconnect the USB cable after ugly screen appears and then reconnect it after launching download mode.now to rebooting. as this tortured soul found out, LOS instructions are kinda off, so what's needed is keep the tablet connected to your PC the whole time, press vol down and power until the screen turns black, let go for a split second and immediately press and hold power and vol up and don't let go until you see the LOS recovery. you mess up any of these steps, a) you won't get into recovery and b) your recovery will get overwritten by the stock recovery and you have to start over with heimdall.
so, finally in the recovery, we select factory reset and then adb sideload. first comes the LOS zip. when it's done, select adb sideload again and send magisk (you have to rename .apk to .zip before you do). done, reboot. here we go...
and it works! no knox nothing, no google, no samsung crap, I have a beautiful, fast, thin device, bereft of any bloatware. without dicking around with animation scales, the UI is infinitely faster and more responsive.
now getting f-droid and installing essentials.
have to research these questions:
- the annoying nag screens while booting (you're a bad person for unlocking it, press power if you agree, etc.) can't be removed?
- does LOS support the pen? I haven't got it, but might consider getting one if it works.
thanks for reading!
