Biden’s China Tariffs Are the End of an Era for Cheap Chinese Goods

    • Profit?
  • Every time I search for a USB key, I end up finding the ones flashed with OS ISOs! I don't have a normal key anymore lol
  • I have experience with both the distros, and I've used them extensively for my personal projects in both of the machines I have. It's a hit-and-miss, according to the NixOS forums. Using Ventoy causes Stage-1 boot to fail, and in both the machines and distros I've tried, it hasn't worked.

  • I am starting to hate pop-culture content so much...

Let's just take for comparison, the Spiderverse series. I do admit that the graphics and artwork were pretty good. Maybe if I was a kid, I would've enjoyed it.

But anything from Marvel (or DC, any other large corpo-studio) feels like something that has been overused, that it isn't original. It's like Wattpad going mainstream - I would rather listen to a terrible story by the original author than a good adaptation, because every adaption does the job of not explaining contexts, and leaves for the consumers to go back to the original source, leading to more disappointment.

There's cringe pop-references and lazy, overused sci-fi troupes like time travel, parallel universe, gene mutation, scientist explaining the "fake science" about worm holes, etc - all of which makes the movie so mushy. When I watch a movie, I don't want to engage in any core research. I want that chapter to close when I finish watching it. Like for example, just look at Interstellar. This movie just takes ten minutes to explain most of the science stuff, and the rest is left to visual perception about how the laws of physics are bent in this unique environment. And the rest is left for me to pursue the subject later in my own personal convenience.

Sure, Howl's Moving Castle by Studio Ghibli does not respect the original novel by Diana Jones faithfully, but that movie was simply magical, and made me so engrossed in reading the original novel. I had butterflies in my tummy when I saw the air-walking scene involving Howl and Sophie, when Calcifer turns the house in a fast-moving vehicle, and when Howl makes his first contract with Calcifer, because they were so damn good. I know enough, and if I need to, I can go into detail about stuff I want to understand more. Like for example, the birthplace of Howl, how he ended up in the parallel world where Ingary exists, etc.

There's moving trees, there's breeze, and when I see the movie, I feel like as if I can sense fresh air going inside my lungs, with some hints of saline, which is how sea breezes smell, that I can perceive the petrichor when it rains, and the strong-yet-hypnotic scent of a witchs' brew and concoctions.

Just making this rant because I'm annoyed with pop-culture fanboys who rely on trend as a metrics to judge other's taste, and that I want a safe-space to discuss about good artists and story tellers.

Personally, I feel like comics or similar media of any form (mangha, manhwa, light novel, etc) sucks as a form of story-telling, perhaps it is because they're too accessible to the point that there's cost-cutting, then there's the dreaded fan service, which is always very sexual and objectifies the character of interest (which is something I hate so much). I equate it to fast media, something that is hyper-capitalist and obsessed with profit - stick to a trend, mass-produce it, and make money for investors.

Compared to something that is constrained to having no form of visual or auditory sensations and relies on imaginative thinking and careful writing - which is where novelists excel at, or when there's no such restrictions, there's a burden of showing the best art, the best world-building, and the reduction of complexity, which good artists and story tellers do so damn well.

  • In your country, what "common" animals are tourists most excited to see?
  • The word "monkey" does not do justice to the diversity of primate species. What are commonly referred to as monkeys are actually macaques. With that being said, India is also popular for langurs, lutungs, lorises and gibbons.

As far as bovine species are considered, people often forget gaurs. They're quite jacked.

  • There's three different species of Ibises in India:

    • Red-naped Ibis

    • Glossy Ibis

But we don't see them as garbage birds - they're quite rare in cities, and you can only see them in towns, villages and forests.

  • I'm making it easier for StackOverflow to produce AI content by manually summarizing my older posts using another AI...

Being the kind-hearted techbro I am, I volunteer to converting all and every posts I've ever created on StackExchange to AI-generated post manually. As far as the content is concerned...uhh totally human readable 👍 , it's English, duh. For a normal person, it's all verbal diarrhea, but for a sigma like me, it's the answer to the question, like the number 42.

Now, wait a minute, you may think that this is a stupid decision in protest of the AI fiasco, but I'd like to assure you that this is the other way around. I am contributing to greatness, you see? - which will be clear to you in some time. Now, since the post is bullshit 💩 according to normies 🤮 like you all, you will have not a fucking clue about what the original post was, except for the title, of course, and the contradictory bullshit 💩 .

Thinking that the users of this site is trying to troll them with this bullshit 💩 post, the chance of aforementioned user commenting decreases. Now that they won't bother commenting, think of thousands of other users who will follow them. My actions - that is, the modification of a legit post to a bullshit 💩 post, has prevented the creation of a new table in their production database. Now, if it were a real sigma, they would just nod and scroll away.

Since those tables weren't created, I've successfully saved the dear CEO from losing a whopping 5 dollars 💰 ! Such revolutionary optimization -to create a captcha for normies? Who would've thought of such a rare inter-op between social engineering 🧠 and computer science 🖥 ?

Following the words of the greatest doctor to have ever lived, Dr. Light Yagami (Ph.D, Shinigamology): "Eat chips with one hand, generate AI posts with another". Do I wait for a Turing award now?

Who is Stephen in Howl's Moving Castle?

At the start of the book, there's an acknowledgement by the author, that goes something like:

    > This one is for Stephen > > The idea for this book was suggested by a boy in a school I was visiting, who asked me to write a book called The Moving Castle. > >I wrote down his name, and put it in such a safe place, that I have been unable to find it ever since. > > I would like to thank him very much.

Devs over here, help me out - I purged whatever little projects I've worked on, out of stress, and because I thought it sucked. Now, my resume is a blank canvas. Need some project suggestions...

I am also very under-prepared for DSA, btw, because I'm using C for solving questions - I should have picket Java or C++, I think. I have some basic understanding of both front and back-end development. I also know a bit of CI/CD and container stuff. I'm looking out for simple projects I can complete quickly, while also being able to touch various parts of the tech-stack (JSON Web Token, websocket, service workers, etc) - anything that is considered good enough for an intern/entry-level full-timer to be considered.

    General Programming Discussion @lemmy.ml velox_vulnus @lemmy.ml
Do (pure) functional system programming language exist?

Sorry if the question is a little vague. Lately, I've been exploring functional languages, and I'm really ill-informed about them.

I'm aware that most of these languages use some sort of garbage collection or reference counting, also that they're (slightly) slow, and that there's no other way for them to clear their memory manually apart from having to use inline C/C++. I know that some functional language can convert to C, but I'm not really interested in that.

I would like to understand if a system programming language, that is also purely functional, exists? If so, how does memory management work in such circumstances? Can be accommodated in a way such that it helps in the creation of, let's say, the OS kernel, and not the other way round. Can it run without having to use any inline assembly/C/C++ code?

If not pure functional languages, then what about impure ones?

Discussion about unicode, fonts and transliteration.

With the release of Unicode 16.0 this September, I may finally be able to use my own language's script. But I am not sure if OSes will directly support the latest version of Unicode immediately. How long should I expect these changes to be available on my local OS?

With that being said, I would like to work on creating my own font, maybe also migrate a few corpuses from the wrong script to the original, new one, as well as work on transliteration.

All of this is impossible for a single person - but I would like to take it slowly. What would be a good place to start? Do I need to keep anything else in mind while starting on this journey?

Is Atlanta a nice place for international students?

I am a little curious about the graduate program for Georgia Tech - I'll probably not make it because of my average grades, but I am also looking at other potential local colleges. Also, it happens to be the same place where a few of my relatives live. From what I know, it was a red state thay turned blue recently.

What about the cost of living and job prospects for a B.Engg grad? I don't have any money on me, so I am planning to take a loan. Is the program harder that your typical local college? Do they tolerate a three-year gap? What about the relative placement quality from your personal experience? Or should I look for universities in Europe?

I am not really looking for all the questions to be answered, but a few of them would help me a lot.

Medical practitioner influencers who are spreading FUD and pseudo-science, can they be held liable in the USA? Do platforms they're on have no obligation to protect users from such harm?

The person I am talking about is Dr. Palaniappan Manickam aka Dr. Pal, a board-certified gastroenterologist from Sacramento, California, who is also a YouTuber. He's created various videos targeting Indian netizens, most of which are decent, but not without adding his own twist of misinformation, that are considered unscientific - some of them have been debunked here and here (auto-captions available).

I can't help but think why YouTube would immediately remove videos that spread misinformation, but only when it affects the western world, but not the other part? Clearly, this guy's video is in English, he participates in collaborations with other misinformation-peddling YouTubers - the consequences of which a few percent of the billion people in India have to face - which is still, a lot of people? Sure, you can complain that it is the responsibility of the Indian government - but they are themselves in this business of pseudo-science. When there's no one taking responsibility, I can't help but feel helpless about the lies people will hear.

Edit: And to why this matters, there's an on-going case in the Supreme Court of India. Said "guru" sold Coronil kit, and mocked dying doctors. What did the kit do? It had high concentration of lead. Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips fought against it - and the system tried to punish him.
