- New study confirms beehive fences are highly effective in reducing human-elephant conflictwww.ox.ac.uk New study confirms beehive fences are highly effective in reducing human-elephant conflict | University of Oxford
A ground-breaking, nine-year study has revealed that elephants approaching small-scale farms in Kenya avoid beehive fences housing live honey bees up to 86% of the time during peak crop seasons, helping to reduce human-elephant conflict for local farmers and boost income. The findings, published in ...

This was found in a forest of northern Denmark. Here they call them steel worms. The common name is Slow worm and the Latin name is Anguis fragilis. It is not a worm though and although it looks like a snake, it is a legless lizard. This is one of the largest ones that I have ever found!
The bonus clip is a larvae of the Calliteara pudibunda moth, also known as the pale tussock

- new skill for both of us: scent work!
YouTube Video

i started this online scent work course about a week ago, and it has been a lot of fun! i'm used to more showy dog sports (agility, rally obedience, dock diving, etc), so finding something chill has been really eye-opening. you can see right around the 1:45 mark where she sniffs the other colander, realizes there's no scent, and immediately plops her nose into the correct one! i'm just so amused and delighted.

My apologies if this is not ok to post here. If not, if anyone can point me in a more appropriate direction? That would be appreciated!

They are taking in more animals due to the emergency situation going on from the hurricane, they had not planned for this growth so suddenly.
There is a link to their vets office in her bio, if you have blankets or food that could be sent she can be reached through her profile via the link for the best way to coordinate. Even just sharing her profile/info so maybe someone else can see would be amazing.

- The only place where whales come to watch youwww.bbc.com The only place where whales come to watch you
Once nearly hunted to extinction, Pacific gray whales in Mexico's Laguna San Ignacio now seem to be as curious about us as we are about them.
Located on the western coast of Baja California Sur's peninsula, the Laguna San Ignacio is considered the last undisturbed breeding and calving lagoon of the Pacific gray whale. The protected whale sanctuary is also home to one of the world's most unusual wildlife encounters: here, curious whales regularly, and voluntarily, seek out contact with humans.
Every year from January to mid-April, thousands of gray whales arrive in the lagoon during a 19,300km journey from the icy waters of the Arctic to the warm waters of Baja California Sur to mate and give birth. While these are now safe waters for nursing and breeding, gray whales were once hunted here. Yet, the animals now seem to have learned to trust humans. In fact, during my recent whale-watching trip with Sanchez's eco-tourism company Pure Baja Travels, we witnessed mothers bringing their calves over to boats to present them like proud parents.
These unique encounters have influenced the conservation and protection of these gentle giants and spurred a thrilling – and responsible – whale-watching experience like nowhere else.

- speed gremlin got a big ribbon today!
jean has earned 500 points in fast CAT since she started in february, so she got her DCAT title today (first was BCAT at 300 points). very proud of her! it has improved her recall and behavior around other dogs so much. 😊

we have a looong way to go, but i like to keep video records of even the not-so-good practice sessions. she's really disengaged with me for a big portion of this video (probably because it's our first time doing this outdoors). hoping to eventually get her into rally obedience. :)

Sudo has been absolutely wonderful towards her - he'll come give the top of her head a small kiss when she gets fussy and then backs off to let us take care of the cause. I'll try to catch his =/ face the next time I tell him it's his turn to change the diaper

- Worth two in the bush
[Image description: a very fuzzy, day old yellow duckling warms up in my hand on a chilly morning.]
This little nugget decided to spend a few extra minutes in my hand after we found its mother. The temperature was hovering around 60F which is a little too chilly for a duckling this young.
- Toe nibblers
[Image description: several ducklings inspect my toes for caterpillars, occasionally grabbing the toes instead]
One of them found an inchworm on my foot the other day and now whenever I stop moving they go nuts trying to find more. It's cute until one grabs a toe or the hairs and does a death shake.

[Image description: a dozen ducklings in various shades of yellow and brown rest under the potting bench in our greenhouse]
Y'all - I'm so excited. We had a disappointing first round of hatching with only three ducklings, but Pearl (tail pictured) hatched out a whopping twelve! We're five days from our niece and nephews coming up to visit during their vacation and the timing is incredible
- Atypical starter pet?
My boy is 6, and has been gassing for a pet for a long time. We want to get him something, but our parameters are pretty narrow:
- Can't be a cat or dog (allergies)
- No rodents/mustelids (wife: ew)
- No snakes (wife: ew)
- No birds (wife: ew)
- No Arthropods (Wife: ew)
Reptiles/frogs/amphibians are ok in our books.
Ideally, I would like something he could physically handle on occasion but that's not a deal breaker.
Fish are cool, but kind of boring to a 6 year old maybe.
Crabs are cool, but seem kind of cryptic.
Would be amazing if it didn't break the bank and was somewhat easy to care for
Thoughts appreciated if you have any.

Two brothers on a nearby boat recorded footage of the breaching whale and then went to help two boaters out of the water.

>The Coast Guard also confirmed that the men who were on the boat were recovered by other boaters and brought to Great Bay Marina.

echo loves the creek so much. definitely her most favorite activity. also my first time using sniffspot (private dog park; this one was about three acres and fully fenced in), and it felt like we weren't fenced in at all! there was a little walking trail and everything.
- Cat likes people but not other cats. How to keep her from being lonely indoors?
I adopted a stray cat outside my apartment a few years ago. She was originally aggressive both to cats and people, but after I started taking care of her she warmed up to the neighbors, too. Since she'd lived outside for about a decade, I let her out in the yard (supervised) and she came to love lounging and waiting for passers by to give her scritches.
Unfortunately, I've had to move. No more outdoor time for the foreseen future, partially because she's in a completely new town, and partially because there are so many birds around here I don't think I'd be able to keep her from running off.
There isn't even a window facing the walkway where she can interact with people through the window, which was another thing she liked doing in our old place. It's just me to entertain her, and I can be gone ten hours a day.
She has lots of toys and beds and things to climb, but since she loved the neighbors so much, I'm worried she needs a companion. Anyone else been in this situation? How do you help your cat adjust?
