Eminem - Houdini [Official Music Video]
  • Not a huge Eminem fan. Although I have to admit the first CD I ever bought was Encore and maybe that poisoned the well. I thought this was good!

Appreciated that the lyrics weren't yelled like many (many!) of his recent tracks. The hook was good. I think it's been long enough for a throwback to be acceptable.

  • I think the best case scenario is that some eccentric guy thinks he is being a legend by continuing the tradition of the shrub magazines that he enjoyed as a kid. That's still pretty weird imo... however I was born in 93 and missed this phenomenon completely.

Men need to be men, according to the editor of the revived magazine hoping to reclaim its rebellious place in pop culture

Loaded magazine returns to reassure men they can ‘ogle beautiful women’

Heard the editor being interviewed on Radio4 Today Programme this morning. This 90s throwback is bizarre. Do people really think there will be demand from this after the initial novelty?

I read a couple articles this morning and the "journalism" reads like a Sunday Sport article.

Interesting thought experiment - since the magazine is online only - are the nonces going to have to print out the magazine now to leave it in shubbery for kids to find? Those reddit threads where every man over the age of 40 seems to have a story about finding porn mags in bushes always had a creepy undertone. I'm not sure that the 'porn fairy' commenters sometimes refer to was a very savoury character.

What's Your Favorite IRC Client, and Why?
  • Discord is closed source and has no way to easily archive/record conversations. This makes it unsuitable for a lot of open source projects who need a chat client. I've not used much Discord but potentially the "gamer" culture might put people off.

Matrix seems good but it's not quite there yet from what I can tell. It's got way more features than IRC but none of them seem to work that well. Like a swiss army knife full of blunt tools.

For IRC I'm on the libera.chat server. Usually hanging out in the gentoo channels since I use that distro. There are a lot of different channels for the various devs, user tech support, niche uses like gaming* and also offtopic chat channels.

*More gamers tend to use other linux distros for some reason

  • Diane Abbott readmitted as Labour MP after race row probe
  • She's not great during election campaigns at the best of times even without the racism cloud hanging over her. By all accounts she is an articulate and intelligent person in private but she has a bit of a habit of engaging with the media while unprepared for interviews. Things like the gaffe where she misquoted the price of training a police officer tend to stick in people's minds; feeds an unhelpful narrative about Labour being bad with money, etc.

  • Senua's Saga: Hellblade II: Accessibility Review

Playing Hellblade 2 at the moment myself. Personally I'm fortunate not to need any of the accessibility features but I found this review to be a fascinating read.

The reviewer also compares the accessibility options to some other recent AAA releases in this reddit comment.

In terms of my opinion of the game: I've only got the Series S version so it's not the full fat graphics but even then they are stunning. I think some of the negative reviews were from people wanting it to be a different type of game, however, if you are aware it is basically a walking simulator with Punchout combat every so often then the story and world takes centre stage. The world is similar to God of War (2018) but grittier and focusing on other aspects of Scandi mythology. I think I like this world more.

Finally someone agrees with me on The Shining
  • King did a good job of massacring his own boy when he tried to make a film adaptation of the book. To some extent I think that justifies Kubrick's creative changes.

Agree that the book itself is excellent - and much scarier than the Kubrick movie btw. It's just that some aspects of it that are the most chilling seem reliant on the medium of it being a novel.

  • You can kind of have your cake and eat it though. If you just ask HR to provide a letter saying they need you at work, so you need to be excused from jury duty. I've done that like 4 times over 3 workplaces.

Edit: then the other cheat code is asking the assessor if "jury nullification" exists in the UK

    BBC Sounds

I've really enjoyed this radio4 series about internet culture and the impact that messaging apps have had on our lives/politics.

Each episode is a half hour with different themes: WhatsApp groups, Politicians using WhatsApp, Slack, Chatbots/AI, Discord leakers, Telegram in Russia.

Probably would say the first half is more UK-specific but the show does a good job of making the later episodes relevant, thought provoking.

This great game went under my radar when it released a few months back

It's a budget puzzler with utilitarian (but charming) graphics. Probably not going to be GOTY for anyone but as a Godzilla fan I'd say it's a solid 8/10.

Seems to be PC-only at the moment but runs fine with Proton on Linux (with compatibility set to version 7).

Interesting interview - it is incredibly spicy at points. Both of them lost their cool at several points here and I don't think either of them come out sounding good.

For what it's worth I think Hallam's spiel about acting emotionally instead of using critical thinking sounds pretty suspect but clearly he's found this an effective line to take when campaigning.
