  • But we couldn't vote for Kamala because Gaza (Trump is worse), we didn't get a choice in the primary (With an Incumbent president primaries are a mere formality), prices are too high (inflation had slowed and deflation makes inflation like a trip to Vegas/Disney/Tropica Island/whatever, and a gazillion other excuses. I can forgive someone for being misled for various legit excuses, but those that are in the know or propagated the manipulation, fuck you.

  • Driving sucks. You have to have a license, insurance, and in many places inspections. You can't or shouldn't do it on meds, alcohol, or sleep deprived. You have buy and register a car. You have to fuel and maintain a car. A few seconds of distraction can completely ruin your life and someone else's. It only takes one person making a mistake to clog up an MTA with millions of people for hours. One in a million will make mistake. You are more likely to have police interactions than almost any other activity. You can only go where roads are. License plate readers can track your movement.

I.e. you pay out the ass to do something stressful and dangerous that opens you up to life altering liability and you can't safely do it if you are impaired in any way. Half of people in the US are all but forced to do this daily and often impaired. Not even negligently impaired, shift workers, emergency workers, parent of new borns are all forced to do this.

  • The tariffs will tank consumption and possibly reduce greenhouse gas emissions?

Blue states can raise taxes since the fed government will lower taxes and provide a kickass quality of life without funding the red states.

Since they love the 10th amendment, blue states can go hog wild with running things in a sane manner.

Hell, maybe the US will split into 3: Pacifica on the West Coast, magastan, and Atlantica (East Coast)

  • You can’t just gloss over tens of thousands of deaths and say got for more of it and harass grieving families for not going with your plan.

Why even bring up Hamas as an excuse, except to avoid addressing Biden’s role in mass starvation of civilians?

I'm not the one making excuses. I voted for Harris. Remember the travel bans early in Trump's first presidency targeting Muslims? Remember his deportation rhetoric. I wouldn't be surprised to find some folks deported to Gaza. I don't wish this on them, but that is a possibility.

The US isn't attacking Gaza, Israel is. What is Biden's role exactly? Providing over 1 billion in aid to Gaza?

  • It's not a fantasy. It's anger and disdain for the stupidity of voting against their own interests and bringing others down with them, not wishing harm. I've said this in other posts, but I bet there is more than meets the eye with this situation that we aren't privy to. The options were the VP of a guy that did provide some aid to Gaza and told Netanyahu he was going too far, which they feel isn't enough, or a guy that is ok with them just wiping them out. The choice is a chance for Palestine to survive vs all but certain annihilation. Does anyone think Hamas would do anything different if the roles were reversed? I don't have a solution, but Trump is going to give them more of what they have a grievance with.

  • Oh, you mentioned you don't want to keep a backup of the entire drive. That is fine, but absolutely back it up before starting the install.

I would just boot a live Linux image and dd the entire device file onto some sort of storage. That way you can get a bit for bit copy of the drive that you can make it how it was before you touched it. When all is well, then you can ditch the backup. It wouldn't be a bad idea to keep if the stuff is important. Storage devices do fail.

  • Yes.

To do this, open a terminal, and do this:

    sudo apt search ntfs

It will be called something like ntfs-progs or ntfs-fuse or both.

    Then:

    sudo apt install PKG1 PKG2

Alternatively, the synaptic package tool has a nice GUI

  • A swap partition is akin to the page file on Windows. The kernel will use it to move memory pages it doesn't anticipate using in the near future to it so it can use that RAM for other things. It will also use it in a pinch when there isn't enough RAM on the system. It isn't strictly necessary, but it can prevent programs from crashing at a huge performance penalty. It is necessary if you want to use sleep or hibernate or whatever it's called when it is powered off physically but resumes what you were doing instead of booting when you power it back on. That takes as much swap as you have RAM at minimum. If you want that, a good rule of thumb is 1.5 times physical RAM.

I have servers I administer for my job that have over 100GB of RAM with very little swap, like 4GB. The applications and machine are tuned and sized so the physical RAM is at ~85% and swap is barely used. The swap is mainly for non application stuff like IDS agent, backup agent, monitoring agent, etc.

If swap becomes a problem, you can adjust the kernel vm.swappiness parameter as needed. It might take some trial and error to get it right.

  • maybe theres something we dont know that justifies it, so its justified

I'm not saying genocide is justified. I'm saying there is a lot we don't know about the situation. We don't have the intel, we don't know what was said in private conversations between Biden and Netanyahu. Consider the fact that Hamas was using a hospital to store weapons. That means the hospital loses its protected status and bombing it isn't a war crime according to the Geneva conventions. There is also inevitably a lot of propaganda. Maybe you are correct and Biden fully supports the genocide. I highly doubt that. It doesn't negate my point that there is a lot about the situation that we don't really know. Hamas sucks. Israel sucks. It's a dumpster fire.

  • Am I the only one who believes we shouldn’t pin foreign policy

We don't have access to the same information they do, so we can't easily judge their decision. The POTUS gets to have conversations with world leaders. These conversations convey attitudes, view points, and information we don't have. They have the CIA, am ambassadors that are experts in the respective culture and country, and DIA that they get information from.

For all we know, Israel was going to nuke Gaza and Biden talked them down. Also, I can all but guarantee Hamas would be doing worse if the roles were reversed:
