  • Yeah most commenters here just read the headline I think.

The govt just wanted the loan so they did the thing.

They're still big into bitcoin. Seems like their holdings have gone well (only because Trump won), but their other projects haven't been successful by any metric.

People haven't taken up crypto as a currency, it's just the pres using federal resources to invest in crypto. He's been lucky so far.

  • Sorry for your loss.

Religion sucks so much, especially the more dogmatic ones. Mormonism is gross.

One insight I would offer is that categorising people as "good" or "not good" may not be helpful. I suspect that your dad probably invests a lot of effort in being a good man, he's just unable to acknowledge that his perspective has been corrupted.

We judge ourselves by our intentions but others by their actions.

It's not wrong to never speak to him again, but maybe this will make the mourning easier.

  • In Australia we created ghettos in the 80s and 90s. It wasn't great.

I'm sure someone will be along in a moment to remind us that these ghettos were just one link in the chain of shit things Europeans did to first Australians.

  • I think "dictatorship" describes a style of government which may not really apply.

The POTUS is obviously intended to have absolute control hence the existence of executive orders. However, like most of the US constitution it relies on the assumption that the people wouldn't knowingly elect an autocrat.

That is to say executive orders are intended to be used sparingly, with great caution, not for things like declaring a new official measurement for Obamas penis.

So while the US govt probably wouldn't be considered a dictatorship generally, Trumps behaviour is certainly autocratic.

  • Thats a pretty cynical take and not really what I'm saying at all.

I have type 2 diabetes. I've never been clinically obese, nor consumed much sugar, I just lost the genetic lottery and have a sub standard pancreas.

GPs just prescribe meds. More and more meds to manage blood glucose levels. It's not hyperbole to say that kidney failure and dialysis is a likely outcome albeit 10 years in the future.

Nutritionists will always formulate a "modified Mediterranean diet", it's really the only diet that most patients have any chance of adhering to. Advising anything else would be a waste of breath.

Instead ive adopted a very restrictive diet that anyone would struggle to adhere to and most people just wouldn't attempt. Additionally I've been able to maintain enough regular exercise to build some muscle mass and lose some weight. I'm 43 now, but stronger than I've been in my entire life.

You're welcome to be a snarky lemmy commenter if that floats your boat, but the people in my life who care about me, and that I care about, universally acknowledge the extraordinary efforts I have invested in not dying.

I have always followed the advice of my GP and my endocrinologist regarding what medications I should take, but as a result of my own efforts I've been able to discontinue most of the meds while keeping my pathology numbers in the right range.

Only you can meaningfully improve your health, and you'll need to investigate your options online. A GP can prescribe medications for you and tell you that you've gone down the wrong path ( like eating 4kg of butter) but they can't help you figure out how to maintain your health.

In summary, following my GPs advice, and not investigating how to improve my health and lifestyle, would have been rich easier option.

  • Yeah I agree that the term "the internet" is not really helpful.

If you want to take care of yourself with an active lifestyle and healthful diet then you'll want to learn as much as you can, and you'll probably source a lot of your information from "the internet" whether that's in the form of subreddits or communities, scientific research, blog posts, podcasts, whatever. Obviously whatever you learn will be applied in concert with the advice you receive from your GP, personal trainer, and nutritionist.

Obviously this is not the same as reading a meme on facebook that said eating 4kg of butter every day helped someone lose weight and deciding to consume butter exclusively for 18 months contrary to advice from their GP and nutritionist.

The problem with nutrition advice from GPs is that it's just not what they do. GPs prescribe treatments. That's it. It's like asking a carpenter for advice about painting.

The problem with nutritionists is that while they have a wealth of knowledge about nutrition generally, managing your macros is more about manipulating your personal preferences. That is to say a nutritionist might be knowlegeable but I've never found their advice to be very helpful for me personally.

  • You're right that its odd to assume that people specifying pronouns are cisgender. I guess there are two reasons for that assumption.

Firstly, 100% of the people specifying pronouns very obviously identify as the prescribed gender. For example, Robert looks and sounds like a guy and specifies he/him. Ain't no one gonna misgender him. Ok it's an assumption to say that he's cisgender but one with an extraordinarily high probability of being correct.

The second reason is just my own attitude I guess. It's impossible for me to know what I would do if I were trans or had gender dysphoria, but I suspect that while I would be proud of being uniquely me, and happy to share that with close colleagues, I wouldn't broadcast it because it's just not relevant. I honestly genuinely believe that if I suffered gender dysphoria, I would just kinda swallow that rather than inserting it into the complex and delicate matters that I email people about. If someone at the revenue service misgenders me while deciding whether to waive $100k in penalties and interest for a client, I just wouldn't care because that person doesn't know me and what they think of me says more about them and their relationship to me than it says about me.

In this context, I assume people with gender dysphoria don't publish it, and that most people who do include pronouns in email footers have vanilla pronouns and include them to normalise the practice.

It's also not really a bug bear per se. I'm a grumpy jaded old man and I'm fairly critical of most things. Yesterday I got a bit ranty about names of things on google maps. Because I spend so much time reading and writing emails, I'm naturally critical of all authors, and footers in particular. Maybe I'm weird but I could talk about disclaimers included in email footers for hours.
