Do you use Firefox Sync? Why or why not?
  • No. Not for any good reason though... I just don't need it.

Firstly, I use LibreWolf rather than Firefox. It still has Sync but it's disabled by default and I've just never felt any interest in enabling it.

I use KeepassXC for passwords, so I don't need Firefox to sync those.

I don't use bookmarks. I don't have an amazing memory or whatever I've just always found it more convenient to just search for whatever I'm trying to find, whether that's searching my history or google or whatever. Like how do you organise bookmarks? Trying to categorise pages that I may wish to refer to in the future would drive me nuts. I do use Zotero which is similar to bookmarks but only for academic research.

Even transferring things between devices. That might be nice but seriously I just search for whatever it was I was looking at on whatever other device.

All that remains is addons and themes and honestly it's kinda nice to start with a clean slate on every new desktop and add in themes and addons. Only takes a minute.

  • Medical freedom vs. public health: Should fluoride be in our drinking water?
  • I'm struggling with this.

You're saying that because science was wrong about something else, it must be wrong about fluoride?

I think that if you really dig into it, you'll find that arsenic use wasn't supported by science, but rather snake oil salesmen.

  • Australian helicopter forced to take evasive action after Chinese fighter detonates flares
  • You don't seem to understand the type of damage it would do to discontinue our trade relationship with China.

It's not just some company would lose a few million dollars in share value.

It would be economic collapse. Rolling blackouts, civil unrest, supply chain disruption, starvation, overwhelmed health services, no fuel, rioting, suburban gang violence, hyper inflation.

China would just be able to buy everything they don't already own and take everything else.

Sometimes it takes courage to stare down an adversary, and not blink when they fire off a few scary flares.

Either ya understand why most women pick the 🐻 or you are the 🐻.
  • This really sums up this whole stupid argument.

All the women choosing bears are talking figuratively.

All the men getting offended are talking literally.

Yes some men are assholes and it's understandable some women are defensive.

    End of.

  • The Verge shows how Google search is useless
  • Meh. Maybe I am a bit out of touch, but honestly you might be too.

There's a whole cohort of people, I daresay most people, who wouldn't bother looking at reviews to purchase this type of item.

If today is the day I'm going to buy a washing machine, then I go to a shop that sells them, I select one based on price vs features, arrange delivery, and leave.

  • Judge finds Donald Trump in contempt for 10th time over gag order and threatens jail time
  • I'm sorry but you're gravely mistaken.

A judges whole job is to interpret the law and to apply appropriate penalties given the circumstances.

In some cases crimes have prescribed penalties - "exceeding the speed limit by 5mph" probably has a prescribed penalty.

In other cases the judge must weight the circumstances and determine what penalty is appropriate.

In this case, trump is antagonising the judge because it keeps his base engaged, and keeps campaign donations flowing in. Trump wants to go to jail because it would ignite his base. Why would a judge feel that penalty is appropriate? May as well give him a blow job.

More to the point, the primary objective of any punishment in this case would be to cause Trump to desist. If putting him in jail is not going to do that, but rather give his contemptuous remarks a far greater reach, then why indeed put him in jail?

Honestly, the best course of action for the judge and the correct "punishment" for Trump is to give his various utterances the least oxygen possible while preserving the authority of the court.

  • How come liberals dont hate conservatives the way conservatives hate liberals
  • This is my take also. I try not to think they're all idiots but more and more I'm just agog at the stupidity required to be conservative.

Conservatives seem to perpetually vote against their own interests.

Like my parents are pensioners, but will always vote for conservatives who will never increase their pension. They've been on this trajectory their entire lives.

I like the phrase "temporarily embarrassed millionaires". As in they think of themselves as wealthy and vote that way because it makes them feel like part of the club.

  • The Verge shows how Google search is useless
  • I can see that your microwave is important to you, but to me "I don't care" doesn't really capture how little I care about my microwave.

I think the one we have is probably the cheapest available when we bought it 8 years ago. The buying decision probably took less than 1 minute, without hyperbole. I only ever use one button, I just press start n times until the timer says something reasonable.

When buying this stuff I don't really see a risk of being locked into any bullshit because all microwaves can perform their basic function of heating food.

[solved] Install MicroG on rooted Galaxy S20+

If anyone could point me to some information or guide about this I'd really appreciate that.

I think the official com.android.gsm and friends need to be uninstalled first. I've tried that with adb, console reports "success", Google Play Services is no longer listed in Settings > Apps.

But... if I try to install MicroG via Fdroid or Droid-ify it goes through the install process, there's no error, but MicroG Core is not shown as "installed". If I try to install the apk with adb it says the currently installed version is newer than the one I'm trying to install?

microg.org seems to just assume you know how to install.

I read something about signature spoofing but I thought that was only for older devices.

Any insights / suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Edit: I think this is the answer: https://xdaforums.com/t/guide-degoogle-any-device-and-install-microg.4058743/

    rsync.net's warrant canary

    rsync.net Warrant Canary

Existing and proposed laws, especially as relate to the US Patriot Act, etc., provide for secret warrants, searches and seizures of data, such as library records.

Some such laws provide for criminal penalties for revealing the warrant, search or seizure, disallowing the disclosure of events that would materially affect the users of a service such as rsync.net.

rsync.net and its principals and employees will in fact comply with such warrants and their provisions for secrecy.

rsync.net will also make available, weekly, a "warrant canary" in the form of a cryptographically signed message containing the following:

    • a declaration that, up to that point, no warrants have been served, nor have any searches or seizures taken place

    • a cut and paste headline from a major news source, establishing date

Special note should be taken if these messages ever cease being updated, or are removed from this page.

    The current message is here:

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA256

    2024-01-08

No warrants have ever been served to rsync.net, or rsync.net principals or employees. No searches or seizures of any kind have ever been performed on rsync.net assets, including:

    Notes:

This scheme is not infallible. Although signing the declaration makes it impossible for a third party to produce arbitrary declarations, it does not prevent them from using force to coerce rsync.net to produce false declarations. The news clip in the signed message serves to demonstrate that that update could not have been created prior to that date. It shows that a series of these updates were not created in advance and posted on this page.

    Organise Google Takeout Files

I downloaded all my photos with google takeout.

The folder structure is an absolute mess.

It would be nice to organise them into YYYY/MM folders but I haven't been able to think of an easy way to do that.

I note that all images seem to have sidecar files ? Like matching json files. I've never encountered these before and not really aware of any command line tools that support them. It's just another challenge as regards writing a script to re-organise files.

    Any insights much appreciated.
