Makes me laugh
  • This is a way better conversation than I was anticipating and let's take a minute to agree on the fact that shits fucked, we'd like it unfucked, and at least short term there's only one way to make that happen.

The view for most of libertarians I get along with would be that no, conservatives didn't blow THEIR face off... They blew OUR face off, like all of us.

Long term, there's a ton to disagree on, but dems are going to need to take friends where they can get them. There are a ton of situations that further both interests that are low hanging fruits, but it's important to acknowledge that, because the party has a lot to answer for.

Again, I cannot wait for the day we're haggling about details. But the dems have entirely lost relevance, save the fact that, somehow, they're our only hope against literal fascism. And Im just going to say it again because election interference is a thing: Joe Biden needs to win this election. But AOC is going to need to make some friends that will feel odd to the party.

  • Makes me laugh
  • I mean... I still love em but you don't have to look far for crazy. That's the "little l" part. You can absolutely take the best and leave the worst. One of the benefits of our electoral system is if you're not in a swing state, youre "protest vote" really does matter. None of those folks will win, but notes will be taken. There's also campaign finance dollars that free up.

And I cannot emphasize the if enough. With what's coming up you have to weigh that against your certainty your state's delegates will still ensure a 2028 election. Fun stuff.

  • Makes me laugh
  • That's totally fair. I'll fully concede a huge part of why libertarians have a great track record on principles is because they've never BEEN in a position to compromise on them.

But you ask about track record, you mention multiple wars, you could have mentioned a ton of other things dem shot their foot off at...

We need more than two parties. Desperately. We don't have it so it's not worth talking about, but it doesn't change the need. But at the end of the day, the thing I can never get past, despite agreeing with dems on a huge number of things, is there's no guiding principle.

Libertarian NAP has a boatload of issues... But it's a starting point to be worked from that supercedes the party. It's incomprehensible to me running a cantidate who voted to get us into those wars, who opposed gay marriage, and we haven't even gotten to Biden yet.

Again, there is no choice in 2024. But the democratic party is entirely without principle. There is no way to shift it internally because it has no internal framework that lasts. I pray to a God I don't belive in it gets us through, but it also got us into this mess and for that it should go.

  • Makes me laugh
  • Yeah, I'll always say "libertarian 'with a little l'". There's some great principles there, and certainly a much better (if only because it's stated) framework to work from, but I do laugh at the memes.

Sometimes it goes right. It was a pleasant surprise that Trump got yelled down so much, but it's an embarrassment he was there in the first place.

And it's borderline copy pasta for me, but abortion is an odd one. Strictly because if you genuinely belive a zygote is a human... Well... The rest doesn't matter. Most people I know DONT belive that, including me, but that will always be the crux of things. But the sort of libertarian "default" is "if I can't say, I certainly can't use a gun to force your decision, therefore your independent decision should be protected".

  • Makes me laugh
  • So here's the thing: I don't need to, but you do. Anyone I still want in my party understands how 2024 needs to go. Meanwhile Democrats can't get out of their own way, have a spotty history at best, and continually fail at 85% of the promises that get them elected.

They were given the softest pitches in history, barley squeaked out a win in 2020, and fours years later they're, somehow, our best hope at getting back to arguing about the best way towards real progress. There is no choice in 2024, it's that simple.

But I am not the one that needs to "keep trying".

  • Makes me laugh
  • They definitely don't "all vote republican". And I'm. Not sure which bush you're talking about but if you mean patriot act Bush... You're kidding yourself.

This day and age I have no way of knowing if your some troll account or not, but in the event that you're not: libertarian praxis is awful. But there are a ton of folks like myself and others who realize to vote in 2028 there's only one way this can go. Literally the article. You'll also find a lot of libertarians who are in favor of things like UBI and a strong social safety net.

And it's the same as it was when we had gay marriage as tent pole when Democrat cantidate were equivicating: we'll do the right thing, but no one gets to dictate that because the current situation is not purely a function of external factors. Two things are true: the democratic party utterly failed, and it's still our best hope for the future.

  • Makes me laugh
  • Yeah, I remember when the libertarians packed an entire circuit and the SC, and then rallied behind the reblican cantidate at a convention.

Take the win. We'll fight in better times. We got work to do now.

  • 'Google Cast' is replacing the 'Chromecast built-in' brand
  • All I know is I appreciate their slow roll. Everytime they break something I replace it with the non-Google option. I've got a small nuc as my main HTPC tied into my plex. Been waiting for an excuse to swap my first Gen Google hockey Puck from like 2012 in my bedroom.

  • Germany has too many solar panels, and it's pushed energy prices into negative territory
  • OK, I'm going to save you time because I do some controls and totally get how "easy" demand management should be given how simple most devices are.

But WHAT?! Thats all built into the grid over there??? That's AWESOME. Let me see if I have this right: there's essentially a small transient frequency modulation in the 60hz(?) in the grid that allows devices to receive a "off" signal?

I could be wrong but I'm 90% sure we've got nothing like that in the states. MAYBE there's something like that for communicating with the meter itself but certainly not past the meter.

  • Hades 2 will likely be in early access until 2025, with first big update to add new enemies, maps and features
  • The only crash like I said was almost certainly due to a multi-monitor display and one monitor disconnecting and reconnecting. I didn't even bother submitting a report.

And yeah there's definitely going to be a few extras. Its wild, like I never play games at launch, specifically because they always ship broken, and here this thing is with the stones to call itself early access when it's so polished narcissus would gaze at himself in if.

  • Hades 2 will likely be in early access until 2025, with first big update to add new enemies, maps and features
  • I hear you, but I caved lol. You will NOT be disappointed. EA is such a weird choice for this one. It's where I'd call it well past beta (a true beta, not the marketing betas that we usually see where there's no time to fix anything). Like it truly is "early access" but we're so used to that term meaning "somewhere in dev".

If they're targeting 2025 release this thing will be incredibly polished by then.

  • Hades 2 will likely be in early access until 2025, with first big update to add new enemies, maps and features
  • I don't know when the person above you played, but I didn't notice any of that (got it last week, binged it, 35ish hours). I didn't notice any missing graphics, and yes there are some spots where you can tell somethings coming, but it doesn't feel janky, it feels exciting. With game loop being all about upgrades, you can tell there's a few that aren't available, but there's so much meat their absence feels like part of the loop not part of the dev cycle.

The voice acting is all there, the mechanics are all there. I think I had like... One line of repeated dilouge? There's a good breadth of characters and they've got that same slow, well thought out progression they did in Hades I. With only one exception that I can't mention due to spoilers, you could tell me this a complete game with free DLC inbound.

Bug wise it's almost entirely free. I had some crashes but I think that was due to a bad HDMI cable repeatedly becoming unstable, and making the game freak out as to what screen it should be on. I haven't had an issue since I fixed the cable and it's the only bug I encountered.

I definitely feel like I got my money's worth.

  • Congrats to all 2024 college graduates!
  • Absolutely. But that also skirts the fact that the economy, globally, depends on rent in Manhattan being high. Like as shitty as the rent is, the bigger problem is how much of that "you're paying someone else mortgage" thing is true and wayyyyy over optimized.

Roll into that the fact that the whole rising/uninsurable thing in Florida is come for literally everywhere near sea level... Which is every major metro in the usa... It's a problem.

  • Medical freedom vs. public health: Should fluoride be in our drinking water?
  • Lol, a bit late but a certain degree yes. Like as a libertarian Ill never be able to square taking money from someone's paycheck in NYC for subsidizing internet in Montana.

But... No one actually cares about that... Eve libertarians, because it's peanuts next to a shitty new f-30whatever that will ever fly.

It's by no mean perfect, and has been massively corrupted by whatever the hell we have going on right now in the US. But the principle of "if it doesn't affect anyone, stop talking to me" is a good one, and at least it's a stated one.

So yeah, I do kinda think people should have the right NOT to make cakes for gay weddings. Sure. Do I care when they're forced to? Ehhhhh. You were going to be out of business soon because you're a godamn asshole sooooo not really no I don't care lol.

So no, the gov should subsidize wifi, but they also already subsidize all sorts of shit, so youre damn right you have to service those folks. I guess that's the thing, libertarianism neccesaties egalitarianism, and nothing else does.

  • Random skipping on direct stream? Temp fix.

I was wondering if anyone bumped into this. I noticed random jumps (1-3seconds) in playback when playing original quality. Definitely not buffering or performance lag, just an actual playback error. Jump was at the same spot anytime I loaded the media and regardless of what time I loaded it to.

Which is curious because on playing the file with a different media player on the box it was on, zero issue what so ever.

Disabling direct stream option (under debug) resolved it, and there doesn't seem to be much of a performance hit, I'm just curious what's going on here.

Noob stumbling along. Just looking for some guidance on adding a module to initramfs.

Running Bookworm, Plasma DE if that's relevant.

Background: I'm learning here. Decent amount of coding and embedded hardware experience but I'm usually missing one or two key concepts with this stuff.

Getting a box running, and wrestling with NVIDIA drivers. I successfully installed the driver (I think), but now lightdm isn't working. From what I read it appears there's a common issue around a race condition where lightdm tries to fire up before the drivers ready, so I need to add the nvidia driver to initramfs.

Can anyone give me some pointers? Specifically while I get the above:

    1. I'm not sure what modules need to be added and if they're named something specific for debian vs other distros
    2. The correct file to modify
    3. The correct format/syntax that needs to be added

I've found lots of examples, just none specific to debian, and screwing around at this level I don't want to bork something enough I need to do a bare install.

    Thanks for any help!

Not sure where to start. Playback from webclient is great but HTPC program is performs terribly. Same machine, local media.

Can anyone point me in the right direction here? I have a pretty beefy PC I use as a server and HTPC. 24 2.5ghz cores, 64gb ram, kind of a crappy video card, debian 11. I just migrated all my stuff over and stress tested it supporting 8 different transcribed streams simultaneously (mix of in/out of local). That worked great.

BUT, the video playback is choppy (as in frame skipping) and out of sync when I'm running the HTPC program. Oddly using the web client on the same machine avoids that issue.

Any thoughts? I'm wondering if it might be that it's an older TV it's plugged into and there's some issue there. Thing is, like I said, the webclient its worlds better. Webclient seems to have some issues but I'm pretty sure that's just due to the TV.

Any pointers are helpful! I'm OK at this stuff but very much learning.

Blanking on a term. I remember a protocol/firmware for wireless routers where the idea was to connect as many as possible to create a quasi internet without any ISPs. Help?

Basically title. I remember reading about it back in like 2018, I even remember a company that would provide crypto based on the amount of traffic you let through. Just curious if that ever saw any growth.

Everything I google keeps bringing up things on the darkweb. The goal of this was explicitly to go "ISP-less". Like they envisioned mesh net covering giant swathes of space.
