  • Any e2ee app for group chat with a web interface?

    Hi,

Trying to move group chat from telegram to a more private option, but the key feature is its web interface which is so convenient...

I've checked SimpleX, Session, Briar & Element-Matrix, but the first 3 do not have a web version and the latest only has a free version for self-hosting and I haven't looked into self-hosting yet.

I'd completely understand if what I'm looking for doesn't exist for free, but if anyone has a suggestion here, I'm interested!

    Cheers

7 Things You Should Know Before Switching to GrapheneOS
  • Fair enough. I'm not in the US & I don't know how things are going there, but here we also have the opportunity to use the same ID for different gvt services (or to use specific ID), but nothing is required for electronic payment (although the credit card is obviously linked to your identity), and overall I barely have to use my account on any of these services, unless I have a request which really occurs a couple times a year max.

And we can log on the website, no need to use any app, which work juste fine even with a VPN.

  • 7 Things You Should Know Before Switching to GrapheneOS
  • I mean it may be pretty well done and thus 'safe' (curious if said app is open source?), but it sounds like you, as an individual, are tracked for most of your activities. Is cash still a mainstream option for payment?

Also, it's probably a costly stretch and really depends on your threat model, but could still have a phone with said app for any activity that requires it, and another one running GOS for a more private use.

  • Snap out of it
  • Thanks, I recently needed picocrypt and not being comfortable with the terminal, snap were a rather convenient way to get it installed, I'll avoid them from now on.

  • Open Source Everything: A curated list of the best open source software
  • My bad, I saw multiple app store listed, so I assumed you listed at least a couple options.

Imo tutanota ils still better than proton since they've never been compromises by sharing user data with the authorities.

As for Quillpad, I never tried Joplin but Quillpad is pretty awesome, deserves more recognition. Also it's les than 5Mo whereas Joplin is nearly 100Mo and asking for permissions like geoloc. I get that it's open source but this sub is about privacy, and Quillpad seems more adequate on that matter.

  • Anyone else getting bounced from mainstream websites with Mullvad VPN?

EDIT: Thank you all for your help, I guess I'll have to keep changing location, filling captcha and occasionally allow an exception. Keeping ones internet activity even remotely private requires effort, even with good tools.

    Hi,

After reading time and again about how Mullvad VPN is the best VPN out there, I decided to give it a try and got myself an account & credit for a month worth of trial.

However after a couple days of use on my mobile (I also use Mullvad Browser), I'm getting bounced from many mainstream website.

Is this normal? Any settings I should adjust?

    Cheers

Is there a point in using forkgram instead of telegram pricacy-wise?

Lemmy start by saying I don't trust telegram in termes of privacy (pun intended). But I still use it for specific purposes and I was wondering if there is a point in using a fork privacy-wise? I's assume not since it still uses telegram servers but still curious about an explanation as to why not! Cheers

How does app forking works exactly (ex: forkgram)?

More specifically, I'm thinking about forkgram, a telegram fork. I get that open source app make their code public therefore people can use it and build from it, but I thought it allowed for creating a separate app. Forkgram however still has all my chats so it must be able to connect to telegram servers and both apps must be somehow intertwined. Since telegram is only partly open sourced, I don't understand how this is possible and why telegram would allow this?

How is it possible for the IT experts to recover data that was erased from a hard drive when the storage of said hard drive appears empty?

And additionnaly, isn't there a way to exploit this so we can store more stuff on PCs?

Edit: can't thank you all individually but thanks to everyone, I learnt something today, appreciate all of your replies!

Google Maps tests new pop-up ads that give you an unnecessary detour
  • This is the last product I still make sacrifice to keep it working on my degoogled devices, because lets be honest, this is the best ("free") GPS there is out there. I've tried so many others but nothing comes close. I dunno what I'll do if (when) they launch this kind of crap here...

  • Is pixel 4a too old for a new phone?

    Hi,

A friend wants to degoogle his phone, so I suggested the OS I'm currently using. The one we can't talk about... He wants a small/compact phone, so I suggested pixel 4a (not buying second hand though), but I'm afraid that planned obsolescence may kill the phone rather soon. What's your opinion?

Cheers and thank you for your help,
