Where to start with a forum or community site and what should I expect it to cost?

I would like to create a site that that allows people to select a category and/or a sub-category and invite people to join and partake in something for a limited time period determined by the OP, but also allowing other users to suggest alternative options as a votable option.

I have no idea where to start with any of this.

Is it just forum software that I should be looking at, and could anyone recommend one if it is. Also how much should I be looking at to begin with?

EDIT - Thanks everyone, all good options to look at. I am going to try a Lemmy Sub, as that seems to be the most favoured answer by users. Hopefully I will get to grips with it. 🙂

What Film Are You Surprised Didn't Get A Sequel?
  • What???

An I just finding out that there will be no sequel to that? I remember that were planning, and planning, and planning, and it was too come out in 20XX, and then 20XX etc (can't remember the years)

What happened? Not enough funding, or was bullshit all along?? I feel so....... Duped..

  • Snowflake is such a weird insult as it seems to imply it's best to just be like everyone else
  • Doesn't the same apply to pretty much any insult?

And why we're not supposed to use the word "normal" when referring to somebody or what they aren't..

I don't think snowflake is intended to be an insult though, is it? I always thought it was a stupid reference to what is perceived as an over sensitive generation (or person).

  • I ordered my daughter a pizza, something I don't usually do. I got Domino's smallest size with two toppings. I got her cheese sticks and two sauces and tipped the driver 20%. $31.07.
  • Not sure where based op, but a pizza counter top oven (5 minutes) is around €80 in Europe since inflation, but can still be found for around €60 in sales. I guess if there are similar ovens and similar prices that would mean if you find yourself getting pics more than 3 times a year from Dominos, then maybe buy one of those (e.g. Arieta 909 or G3ferrari) It would work out cheaper. Make the dough, buy the toppings put them all in the freezer. No smell other than the same smell from cooked pizza.

  • VPN by Google One shuts down
  • I'm surprised anyone uses Google services considering how they infiltrate your privacy.

A Google VPN is as private to me as giving a six year old a cardboard box and asking them but to look inside.

  • For security reasons
  • I haven't ever used it, never signed a petition, but isn't change.org only about petitions? I can kinda see their reasoning.. They may even have had their hand forced to do it.

Loads of people who want their way probably signed up with tons of accounts to skew the results. If it's going to work, I guess they need to be able to show that they're legit, out at least that change.org are doing their best to make it that they are.

It's easy to set up one gmail account for example and use it a million times with moving a dot throughout the name or putting a plus sign and anything after the username but before the @ symbol.

  • Quiet On Set Documentary Exposes Nickelodeon Kids Shows
  • I've no idea who any of the people in that video are, I understand what's being said about the main guy, but as a complete outsider to the whole thing, that video sounds very much like a witch hunt. A lot of supposing and apparently etc.

He probably is a weirdo, but I suspect if anyone was able to dive into the murky past of most Hollywood kids that they wouldn't like what they find. This guy must've hurt somebody to be singled out. Would love to see how far back you would have to look into Disney before finding something nasty.

  • Ireland women's basketball team refuse to shake hands with Israel
  • So many ways to answer that without being facetious. It may be a bit of a gamble to take a stand, but it would show how strongly they feel about the genocide. Unless they are genuinely just worried about the anti-Semitic comments. Having others take a stand behind/beside them, may mean there is no fine to pay, or there will be enough support to help pay the fine. Unfortunately only one way to find out. My money would be that others would have taken a stance with Ireland. But as it is, nobody stood. The Irish team seen to have just taken offence to being called anti-semitic.

  • Ireland women's basketball team refuse to shake hands with Israel
  • Getting thumped because of 4 injuries and 5 players refusing to play against Israel. A boycott would have achieved a lot more. The fine would be nothing compared to the attention it would have received.

  • Good “Buy for Life” Brands
  • Doc Martens are not a good buy for a while now. Standards of quality have dropped loads and my nephew has had two pairs fall apart from the DM store in the last 8 months. Red Wing, Thorogood, Solovair among others, but avoid Doc Martens when buying for life.
