Kojima was fuckin cooking with the plots of the Metal Gear games. Like they're all post 9/11 so its not like he's a psychic but playing MGS2 in 2024 is just like "oh yeah that's just life now"
MGS2 was developed pre-9/11, but you can tell that Kojima was really just putting current events and sentiment into the writing. He's definitely not some kind of prophet, but you do have to give him credit for tackling the subject matter for a video game.
whether or not you like his games, you gotta admit that Kojima is one of the guys with the craziest, most unique ideas in the industry... I don't think there's anybody else that comes even close when you're talking about triple-A games
I don't like MGS4 very much but the infomercials and commercials that play in the beginning pretty much depicted what life would be like today, endless war.
This whole doc is super cool and also funny as fuck.
My favorite bit is right at the beginning:
Title
Metal Gear Solid III
Written as MGSIII for short. The three Roman numerals symbolize the three tallest skyscrapers in Manhattan, the setting for the game.
Instead of proceeding on to MGS2, as one might expect, we are making MGS3. The question in peoples’ minds, ‘Why is it 3 and not 2?’ will have a big impact.
Konami did not let my man breathe. That would have been amazing though if they called it 3 in all the marketing without explaining why. He probably had a kooky idea to make a sequel to a game that never got made, or mess with the idea of sequels in general. MGS2 is already like that. It subverts the player's expectations by suddenly introducing Raiden, and purposefully reiterates the plot beats of the first game.
I really want more "America/The Defense Industry is the baddies" games. Every single COD and Battlefield needs a counter narrative, and MGS2 and Spec Ops: The Line can't be the only two.
Unrelated, design bibles needs to be open-sourced. They are so cool. I read the Batman Animated Series Bible it it was just really cool to see the "why" behind many of the shows production.
come on that's not based in any way. that's just liberal "this wonderful country has been corrupted by sinister forces" bullshit. "festering discharge" and "intangible entity" my ass. All the evil the United States have brought upon this world is by design and on purpose and if you call yourself a commie you should know at least as much. There's no magical good version underneath US and there never has been.
All the evil the United States have brought upon this world is by design and on purpose
This is the way I took "...the country's political structure has created."
I didn't read it as Kojima saying the evil of America is a new phenomena, but rather as something that's always been building up because of the systems in place.
yeah, i get the impression kojima was trying to point to the 'material conditions' of a political system being the source of the problems, rather than any Individual Bad Apples among the Great Men In Charge or any Race Essentialist trait of Americans as a people.
