Sadly I can report that the show continues to have scenes like that in season 2 as well. Real bummer cause I like a lot of what it's doing but feeling like I always have to watch out for random SA is a huge malus. Unrecommendable really
Never continued Dandadan after episode 1 for this reason, it's really unfortunate because I didn't mind the bizarre monsters and sex jokes but the male gaze of it was so exploitative and apparently there are more scenes like that.
I almost did the same thing. I continued on and started to enjoy it, but can't blame anyone for stopping there. It's rough.
That scene is overwhelmingly the worst one, but there's still some shit later on. In terms of SV against women, this video contains roughly every shot in the anime (maybe missing a couple shots in the UFO). There's more bad male gaze stuff in the manga, but I don't remember it reaching the level of violence again. The manga still has some pretty vile elements, though.
None of this is to encourage you to watch it, I think it's very fair to avoid it. I think, maybe even more so than with other anime, it's disappointing that it was made this way because it actually has some very charming writing when it's not being het (derogatory) and both the manga and anime have lovely art in their action scenes, and I'm not a worldbuilding guy, but I think the worldbuilding is kind of interesting too.
I dream of a day where, under communism, this sort of exploitation is banned and we get cool battle manga that aren't derailed by pedo shit (or violence against adult women either).
Yeah I don't get it, either. There's ways to talk about sexual abuse that don't involve showing gratuitous fetish shit. Wonder Egg Priority did it well (until the ending when production became a mess and the new show runner thought it would be a good idea to self-insert as the abuser).
Same
I think what's worse about it is the labeling scenes that are clearly SA and supposed to make you scared or feel uncomfortable - "gooner" or "fanservice". I know, I know, half of these people call it fanservice for views, as it causes engagement, indignant nerds (like me) to get mad that it is not fan service; but it is genuinely disturbing that an abduction and attemptedremoved, and a attempted gang assault are deemed "fan service". It's clear the author is saying something about both 1) puberty in general and in Japan more specifically 2) the evil bad guys are japanese salarymen aliens, slumlords, and imperialist globalists.
I think there's a difference between an eroticised scene of SA and one that is supposed to be genuinely disturbing.
I would say that this scene in Dandadan is eroticised. It's not the same.
You don't need to show anything that some people would put on a website for kink content with a bunch of extremely specific tags to make the point you're making, as a director. It has that intentional gaze of a lecher built into it.
the evil bad guys are japanese salarymen aliens, slumlords, and imperialist globalists.
I don't really disagree with this part
The UFO scene is obviously gooner shit, so that undermines a lot of the messaging you attribute to it. I hate when people look at eroticized SV and then say "idk man, if you think this is supposed to be horny, that's a you problem." Like, what am I supposed to do to show you that this is not what a tasteful or utilitarian depiction of SV looks like?
Yes, it unequivocally and beyond any doubt is "fan service," of a disgusting and anti-social kind. The other scene they show with her isn't a tenth as much so, though it still needs to be considered in the context of them having previously done the thing so many anime do where the first episode is ludicrously exploitative.
Are you the Goblin Slayer fan who denies that show being exploitative too? I can't remember their username.
For as much shit as video games get around here I see shockingly little disdain for anime in the same generalized sense, considering the staggering abundance of shit like this in the medium.
I'm not trying to dunk on anyone who enjoys anime and I'm also not trying to incite disdain for anime, but I guess I'm just noticing the disparity on Hexbear in particular given the recent discussion of video game hatred.
i personally feel like this site could use less moralizing about TV and entertainment in general.
e: BUT NOT ABOUT SOLARPUNK!!!!
