or for a potential fun comment thread: is dude gendered? I grew up in a place where a lot of people called everyone dude regardless of gender. That said, when I’ve brought this up, some people get real heated about it.
To me this feels like you could say "Guys, <insert sentence directed at a group>", as a general term to catch the attention of/refer to a mixed genre group as a whole. Anyone getting upset that you're using "Guys" in that context to refer to both men and women is just looking for an excuse
You know I've said "dude" all my life and I still use it all the time in regards to everyone. If I saw that someone was genuinely offended at being called dude I wouldn't use it again with that person, but now that I really think about it I don't think I've ever heard the term in a derogatory way. Like ever. For me it's always been a happy/inclusive word for addressing friends. My only worry for now is that saying it shows my age.
Idgaf if dude can be gendered. I use dude every time in my speech. I sometimes even use "bro" towards women. People need to get over themselves and stop assuming negative intent at everything
good for you, some people really don't want to be called that.
part of respecting someone's identity is respecting the terms which they want and don't want to be called by.
getting them wrong doesn't make you an asshole, getting them wrong and not caring does.
People need to get over themselves
in this context this is identical to Conservative "the new generation is too sensitive!!!" drivel.
part of respecting someone's identity is respecting the terms which they want and don't want to be called by.
Sorry, but i don't subscribe to that ideology. I think it's high time we (left of centre) started clapping back at this overly-woke drivel. Yes, i said it. I'm not going to change how i speak because someone isn't happy with it. People can however stop getting offended at every little thing that lacks malicious intent and focus on bigger and better problems.
This is why people don't take LGBT rights advocates seriously. This ultra-woke garbage is alienating those that would likely come to accept LGBTQ individuals as part of society. If you notice something, most arguments from the right are against all this pronoun nonsense and not actually against LGBT individuals themselves (except from the ultra-religious) which can then spew into hatred for the LGBTQ community.
If we stopped focusing on these trivial issues such as what to be referred to as, maybe the non-religious right would take identity politics a little bit more seriously.
Uh-huh. Seems you already know your stance is wrong.
Say it, you coward. You’ve already been blowing all the dog-whistles you can find, surely you have the guts to actually say the things you’re thinking.
I guess I'll say it😔. Ultra-woke garbage includes pronoun-mongering, the whole trans women participating in women's sports thing, race-swapping movie characters, and plenty other stuff.
Let the downvotes and blocks ensue because I'm going against the consensus opinion here😔
Earlier you were saying that you reckon people are oversensitive about use of 'dude'. You took the angle that it can be ungendered, and so people shouldn't be oversensitive about its use. But now you mention 'race-swapping' and trans women. Apparently it is you who is oversensitive. You are upset about the way people express themselves in cases where it has no practical impact on you. You could just ignore it completely, with no cost and no impact, but for some reason you rail against it instead. It's interesting what riles some people up.
I didn't just say trans women bud. I said trans women in women's sports. Why does this always happen on Lemmy that i make a point and someone twists it to suit their narrative?
Also, i could get into my qualms with race-swapping characters, but i don't feel like debating tonight. Maybe another time?
Are you okay having the tables flipped and someone calling you "sis"?
Using male language as the default may not bother you and you may have no ill intent with it, but it does have a history tied to it. A history where women were seen as less than and didn't have equal rights. Western society still uses male language slang regardless of gender (hey guys, dude, bro, bruh) and it all stems from a history of a patriarchal society. Every time we say, "hey guys" to refer to a mixed-gender group, we perpetuate patriarchy, whether we intended to or not.
Legally and overall culturally, women are still seen as less than and we still don't have equal rights (e.g. divorce and abortion law).
