    > Police in a majority-Black Mississippi city discriminate against Black people, use excessive force and retaliate against critics, the Justice Department said Thursday in a scathing report detailing findings of an investigation into civil rights abuses. > > The Lexington Police Department “has created a system where officers can relentlessly violate the law” in one of the poorest counties in America, according to the Justice Department. Investigators found police also sexually harassed women and kept people behind bars for minor offenses because they couldn’t afford to pay fines. > > “Today’s findings show that the Lexington Police Department abandoned its sacred position of trust in the community by routinely violating the constitutional rights of those it was sworn to protect,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said.

The US regime just executed another innocent black man.
  • Thanks, but the unfortunate problem I see among many of my white peers is that's a deep valley. You don't get to the other side of "they must have had a reason" without exposing yourself to multiple instances where they clearly had no such reason.

And it's not exactly something you can force on people. A couple people I know have started paying a bit more attention when cop videos float across their tiktok feed based on comments I've made, and they are coming around too, but folks need to want to see to the other side of that valley, and it's a very comfortable valley to live in - and more importantly you've always got a fresh batch of people moving into the valley.

  • The US regime just executed another innocent black man.
  • “Oh, I can’t support those cruel acts, but the sad reality is they probably didn’t happen for no reason either” is the refrain of the embarrassed white moderate.

I'm ashamed to admit that specifically with regard to police brutality, I was in the "they must have had a reason" camp (without looking any further into it) for many more years than I had any excuse to be. Rodney King put a crack in that, but I was still pretty young then, and surrounded by my own privilege. It was many years later before I realized that sort of shit and worse was happening constantly.

  • I don't understand why underbaked borderline raw cookies are such a popular trend.
  • Starting with my grandmother, I've been warned by the various bakers in my life for about 50 years that the various kinds of raw dough I have wheedled them into giving me or snuck off of their work area will give me a stomach ache or cause other issues. The most recent time I was warned in this way was surely less than 2 months ago.

So far so good, not a single problem, and I never pass up a chance to eat uncooked batter or dough.

I am absolutely not saying the risk doesn't exist, but the chance of it seems so minuscule (based on my anecdotal lifelong experience) that I only ever think about it when someone brings it up.

If I bought something prepackaged on a grocery store shelf, like from nabisco or whatever, that was undercooked, I wouldn't eat it. From the kitchen of a relative or right from a bakery - has never given me pause.

  • Jane Fonda rallies disaffected young US voters: ‘Do not sit this election out’
  • I agree with all that, but less so that she's capable of doing anything meaningful with the demographic she's targeting.

She should be targeting younger boomers and older x'ers if she wants to find a group that might want to listen to her.

(I say this as an older x'er)

  • Jane Fonda rallies disaffected young US voters: ‘Do not sit this election out’
  • I'm just barely old enough to for Jane Fonda having an opinion to be meaningful for me in any way, and I'm in my 50s. How on earth is she going to rally "disaffected young US voters" when most of them have likely never heard of her?

  • Missouri to execute Marcellus Williams despite prosecutors’ objections and innocence claims
  • Missouri’s Republican attorney general, Andrew Bailey, has fought to allow the execution to proceed.

"The attorney general’s office, who had nothing to do with this whatsoever, are the ones who are trying to lead him to the death chamber. It’s pretty startling and extraordinary.”

I recognize that this is a horrible tragedy for this man and his family, and I hope there is somehow a last-second reprieve, but let this be yet another reminder - R is the party for those with no empathy, no compassion, no concern for anyone not like them. (and that includes the ones jumping from Trump's sinking ship to cozy up to Harris.) If a Republican is running for any position in your town, any at all, vote for someone else.

  • I don't understand why underbaked borderline raw cookies are such a popular trend.
  • This is how I've loved cookies for my entire life. I'm just happy they are easier to find now.

Edit: I'm sincerely amused that someone downvoted me for expressing my opinion on the kinds of cookies I like. I didn't know this was a "ketchup on steak" level issue. 🤣

The meme isn't about what kinds of people are called white. It's about non-white characters being replaced with white characters, and no one uttering a peep. Then a mermaid is re-imagined as black and everyone loses their shit.

(AP) — The Justice Department has opened a civil rights investigation into a Mississippi sheriff’s department whose officers tortured two Black men in a racist attack that included beatings, repeated use of stun guns and assaults with a sex toy before one of the victims was shot in the mouth, officials said Thursday.  > > The Justice Department will investigate whether the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department has engaged in a pattern or practice of excessive force and unlawful stops, searches and arrests, and whether it has used racially discriminatory policing practices, according to Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke. > > Five Rankin sheriff’s deputies pleaded guilty in 2023 to breaking into a home without a warrant and engaging in an hourslong attack on Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Terrell Parker. A sixth officer, from the Richland Police Department, was also convicted in the attack

Albuquerque's police chief thinks cops have a 5th Amendment right to leave their body cameras off
reason.com Albuquerque's police chief thinks cops have a 5th Amendment right to leave their body cameras off

Harold Medina made that argument during an internal investigation of a crash he caused last February.

Albuquerque's police chief thinks cops have a 5th Amendment right to leave their body cameras off

Medina offered two puzzling excuses for leaving his camera off. He "cited intermittent conversations with his wife, who was a passenger in his unmarked patrol vehicle at the time of the collision," Ortiz says. "He claimed there was a right to privileged communication between spouses, which specifically exempted him from mandatory recording requirements." But the relevant policy "does not provide for nonrecording based on spousal privilege."

Even more troubling, Medina said he "purposefully did not record because he was invoking his 5th Amendment right not to self-incriminate." Since "he was involved in a traffic collision," he reasoned, he was "subject to 5th Amendment protections."

The department has killed more than 400 cases of alleged misconduct this year that an oversight board had investigated and substantiated. It’s part of a lax attitude toward discipline under the current police commissioner, Edward Caban, critics say.

    > The New York Police Department has tossed out hundreds of civilian complaints about police misconduct this year without looking at the evidence. > > The cases were fully investigated and substantiated by the city’s police oversight agency, the Civilian Complaint Review Board, and sent to the NYPD for disciplinary action. They included officers wrongfully searching vehicles and homes, as well as using excessive force against New Yorkers. > > In one instance, an officer punched a man in the groin, the oversight agency found. In another, an officer unjustifiably tackled a young man, and then another officer wrongly stopped and searched him, according to the CCRB. > > The incident involving the young man was one of dozens of stop-and-frisk complaints the NYPD dismissed without review this year — a significant development given that the department is still under federal monitoring that a court imposed more than a decade ago over the controversial tactic.

I have the unpopular opinion that aside from a couple specific songs I've been lukewarm to every LL Cool J album later than Radio (which was such a banger), but this is so eyebrow-raisingly off the path of what I tend to expect from LL Cool J that I had to post here.

I literally came blind to this new album, and just before hitting play I thought - well unfortunately I can predict I'm not going to get any hard social commentary like from dead prez or etc...

30 secs later it felt like that thought had personally offended him. Track 1 no less.
