- Feedback from our meeting with parkrun, 27th April 2024www.change.org Feedback from our meeting with parkrun, 27th April 2024
As arranged, we met up with Russ Jeffreys at Higginson parkrun, in Marlow, and after the event, sat down together in a quiet local pub. Russ arrived with Paul Sinton-Hewitt, the parkrun founder. From our side, we had Will Hartley, Mary Taylor and Alexander Smotrov, another signer of our open letters...
Had no idea this was a thing to be honest.
Edit: bit tone deaf but can see the value in the changes.

- Get Better Anaerobic Stats from Runs
I consistently have a lack of anaerobic load in my Garmin training load. I did a track run today trying to work on intense intervals. I was hoping to get to the end and have more anaerobic effect than aerobic. Is there something I should be doing differently in my runs? I was under the impression that the rest phase between run intervals should allow you to really catch your breath, so I often walk for a few seconds before getting back into a jog in my rest interval.
Should I be more focused on keeping my pace up during the rest interval? Should I be running fewer/more intervals? Should I ignore these stats and just enjoy the run?

- do you notice any difference wearing polyester underwear to cotton?
I've read cotton absorbs sweat, whereas polyester repels it, so if I run I should get polyester underwear.
Is the difference very noticeable?
This is to wear with my leggings, because if I go commando my male bits turn to one side.
- those of you who run with and without (compression) leggings, what differences do you notice?
do you also notice differences if you use ½ lengths or compression shorts?

- Experiences running without a bra?
I hate wearing sports bras when I'm running because of the tightness around my chest. I'm starting to get used to running without a bra, but what I'm having trouble with is understanding what the long term impacts are?
The internet tells me it's fine, and but it also says that it's a bad idea, which is entirely unhelpful!
Has anyone had experience running without a bra and if so, how did you find it (assuming you have boobs)?
- My watch is such a hater.
I have been working on my 5k time, and today I ran at near race intensity to see where i was at. My watch has been estimating my 5k time to be around 31 minutes. Well today I ran it under 28. I go see what it had to say about this, and it drops its estimation to 30:30. "Ok bruh, I see what you're about now.", I say to it.
Anyways I am interpreting this as a reminder that my watch doesn't replace a real coach, and I need to put more thought into my training.
- is it a bad idea that winter leggings don't have any transpiration area, like some summer leggings do?
cross-posted from: https://feddit.de/post/10035653
> be patient, because I don't know what the right word is: I mean the visible fabric of some summer leggings where everybody clearly sees that the fabric is porous in some parts, so humidity and heat escapes. > > Absolute noob here regarding leggings, Im thinking about returning my asics winter leggings due to this, unless you tell me this is a stupid idea and Im gonna need al the heat I can save during cold weather and winter.
- several questions about my first leggings (male runner and cyclist)
cross-posted from: https://feddit.de/post/9993044
> Im a male trying on several black leggings for running, stretching and cycling, I've never bought anything so tight. Im skinny built and have tried new balance, asics and adidas. My questions:
> I've read some more expensive leggings have not a single, but double seam at the front side (crotch), whereas most simple leggings for men and women have just one seam in the middle. Should I return the leggings I bought and buy only the ones that have 2 seams at the front to better accommodate my manhood bits? I’ve also seen that expensive adidas leggings have just one seam at the front so, maybe I’m overthinking this?
> Im not going commando or wearing sport shorts over the leggings because it doesn't have any purpose, except to drag you down when running, and look unflattering, even my boxer shorts make it look a big silly, because people notice them on my leggings, so I’m thinking about buying a thong, but I don’t know what brand to look for, if cotton would be better than polyester or if I should buy a V string or a G string.
> The adidas I bought are cross high waist and are for women, however, I don’t see why I shouldn’t buy them: they sit good and aren’t too tight on the waist (seller told me leggings for women are wider on the thigh and smaller on the waist, but to me they look and sit good and the knit is softer than the other ones I bought, I like them. Am I going to regret keeping them?
> Any other tips you have, welcomed.
- Nike Run Club app for Cycling?
I'm a big fan of the NRC guided runs, and have been using them for a few years now. However, I've hurt my knee, so I am switching to cycling indoors to stay active.
I really like the guided runs because it adds a huge variety to my workouts, and I get to learn about running and learn about my body while staying active. I like something similar with cycling workouts. Does anybody know of anything?

Living at 60 degrees north, the March increase in sunlight is a big deal. We'll get a renewed ~150 minutes, stretching just 9.5 hours of daylight to 12. In just a few weeks!
To match this march of time, and to celebrate the sunny increase, I'm determined to run 150 miles (~240kms) between March 1 and 31. Maybe you'd like to do something similar? Try 150kms (~93 miles)? Or 150 minutes in the gym? Or, if you're like Michael, breaking 150 boards in your martial arts practice?
Of course, the increase in daylight is for those of us in the northern hemisphere. If you're waving goodbye to that daylight across the global south, #March150 is still for you!

- PB with the doggo this morning
Obviously not that great in comparison, but I've managed to keep running 3 times a week since September last year. I'm pretty happy with this I've gotta say. Started running for weight loss and heart health. Haven't lost any weight - I'm still ~120kg post COVID - but my heart health has improved a lot.
Side note - if I was to compete against the 4 minute mile record holder, they would beat me by almost exactly 4 minutes...haha

One recent winter, Mark Stosberg set out on a 50-mile run. He wasn’t racing in or training for an event, so at some point, he had to answer the question, Why keep going? To test his physical and mental limits? To satisfy a primal instinct? Or was it therapeutic in some way?

The marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum has died in a car crash in Kenya at the age of 24
What a sad day for the world of running and the world in general! He had so much potential ahead of him. Holding the world record marathon and being only 24! I’d have loved to see what greatness he would have achieved. RIP
- Started running for the first time, and wanted to show my progress to someone.
Running distance over time. I still can't run 5k without walking about 20% of the way.
And it's not going fast either, but I'm still proud of the progress. The data is keeping me going.
EDIT: Thanks for the support! The legs still don't want to do, what I want them to. But they will learn, who's the boss eventually.

- How do you streak runners manage on really bad weather days?
I’m trying to get into streak running, but when I get hit with a day that has terrible weather (ice rain, smoke from Canada being on fire, etc) I am unsure what to do. And I don’t own a treadmill or have a gym membership. Do you just have very specific gear for those days or what? Any motivation tips and gear tips?
- General hearth rate thread
Interested what people (mostly those with watches) do with their HR metrics, and how they use it to plan their exercises or their pace.
What is your rest HR? What is your maximum? What range are you typically in during exercise? What do you consider healthy? How do you use HR to determine your pace or what exercises to do? Do you have any advice with respect to this topic? Or do you think measuring HR is pure nonsense and we should not bother doing so at all?
I noticed my rest HR is at 50. My runs are mostly at 165-170ish averaged (aged 28), which seems to be fairly high. My last run (a bit faster than usual) had 24 minutes between 158-176 and 18mins higher than 176, at the end I peaked at 192 for an end sprint.
- Needing some help to get started running.
Trying to see if anyone has a routine for someone totally new to running. I'm a big fan of "this week do this, build up to do this, etc..." I'm in my thirties and from a young age until I was about 20 I had severe asthma. I've never been good at running. Asthma doesn't bother me anymore but I'm needing something to do while traveling for work. I work construction all across the state and come home on the weekends.
If anyone has some ideas that would be great. When I do stuff I tend to over do it then it then it's hard to make myself go out again.
- What is the red bar on my Garmin?
I'm using a watch face that shows my step count at the top, and a progress bar representing my progress towards my step goal at the bottom. It's a default-available watch face on my Forerunner 935, not one I downloaded from anywhere.
At the top, above the step count, often appears a red bar, but I haven't figured out what it actually means. Does anyone know?
- Is having a coach right for me?
I'm looking to qualify for boston (M41, 3:10 for my age group)
Current PR is 3:20
Is having a coach worth my money and their time? I have no delusions of being an elite runner. Is coaching a good tool for my current level?
- Streak runners, congratulations on another year!
Props to everyone getting in their daily miles or more for another year!
For me it’s year 4! 🎉 Wasn’t a great running year though, didn’t hit 1000 miles. But there were a few fun runs including the Dam tot Damloop, a Mud Masters event and a local event in the middle of a heat wave.
For the curious, see e.g. https://www.runeveryday.com/
- Personal Milestone
I just wanted to share that today I ran a 7:38 mile. This isn't huge, this isn't a record. But for me it's the first sub 8 minute mile I have ran in about a decade and I feel fucking PUMPED.
Anyone who's out there struggling to meet what they used to be able to do easily, it's okay. We all feel that at one point or another. What matters is setting goals and working to get there no matter how long it takes.
