- How to block Threads on Mastodon
Should the Fediverse welcome its new surveillance-capitalism overlords? Opinions differ! If you're one of the fediverse influencers who sees Threads arrival it as "historic" and "a glimpse of the future" ... well, you might want to skip this post.
But if you're one of the many many people on the fediverse who doesn't want to deal with Threads, read on!

Threads’ fediverse beta is here.

- Why does mastodon show news ?
In the Mastodon app, there is a News tab, why is that ? Is it a way do monetize the service or just a help to check up on the hot news going on on Mastodon ?
- How do I engage?
I never used Twitter. Reddit was the only social media I engaged/posted on for years, moved to Lemmy a couple months ago. I made an account on Mastodon, downloaded moshidon, followed a bunch of hashtags, now I don't know what to do. Do I just start posting "Facebook status" type posts? Is Mastodon basically like individual Lemmy comment threads with hashtags being the main post?
Now I know how my parents feel when I try to explain anything outside of Facebook to them.
- What server should I join?
I'm thinking about joining mastodon, but I don't know what server to go with, and the list of servers seems to have very little information about each. Right now I think I'll open an account on mastodon.social.
I'd prefer a server with a high character limit and that has access to most other servers.

- What's a good Mastodon instance focused on videogames? (meaningful discussion & news, not memes)
The way I used Twitter was by aggresively muting, blocking & managing the interests functionality through the years until I pruned my home page to mostly show me meaningful discussion about videogames (and a bit of other media), some relevant news, including a good balance of AAA and indie stuff as well as a a balance of mainstream (mostly from US and Japan videogame industries) and diverse stuff (ie from other countries). I had industry people, interesting youtubers (more essay-types than gameplay-types), socially progressive viewpoints, diversity, a bit of art, a bit of lore, etc.
Are there good instances focused on that? I know I can see stuff from any instance but AFAIK some are better to set up camp because of their admins, their defederations and also because it's a bit easier to find new interesting accounts to follow from within the instance.
Which do you recommend?
EDIT: I do know there's no algorithm in Mastodon like in Twitter so I'll only see whoever I follow. Just wanted to clarify before someone took the work to explain all that. I just want to replicate the kind of feed I had on Twitter, just that this time it'll be 100% from following accounts rather than a mix.
- Why don't my Kbin posts appear on mastodon?

Is there any way to make creations appear there?
- Newbie on Mastodon: where is an overview of my subscriptions?
I did not use twitter, but i decided to check out mastodon. One thing is a mystery to me; i can't find an overview of the accounts i started following, when i use mastodon on the web. Here on Lemmy, for instance in the Photon app i use on the web, my subscriptions are neatly positioned in the sidebar; one click and i'm there.
I'm trying to make lists, to create at least some order. And that turned out a chore as well; instead of typing a few letters and my followed accounts popping up, i need to look up the entire name and type it in.
I hope this newbie post is ok here. I am reading some beginner mastodon instructions, but those are usually loooong explanations.
Also, are there some fun accounts i should follow? Not NSFW please, but things like nature and animals, science, open source would be nice to add.

- What happened to c.im?
Maybe I missed something, so my apologies if this is a stupid question— but what happened to the c.im instance? I’ve periodically checked the last 24 hours and haven’t been able to connect.
Is it gone, or is something else going on? Thanks in advance, friends!
- Is there a way to filter posts that are only in your language?
I follow a few hashtags and occasionally I get posts that aren’t in English on my feed. It’s not that big of deal but it’s be nice if there was a way to ignore posts that aren’t in my set language or a way to auto translate them since I only speak English. I’ve been using the official mastodon app and it can give me the option to translate posts so there’s got a way to just auto translate, right?
- Fantasy football or just sport related servers?
I'm wondering if there are sport related servers, or more specifically fantasy football(USA). I couldn't really find any but I'm hoping someone else might know of one. I tried fantasy football hashtags but there just doesn't seem to be much activity but idk if those are just ones located on the server I chose. Or if the sports people haven't migrated yet
- Even though your account is not locked, the mastodon.world staff thought you might want to review follow requests from these accounts manually.
Never seen this before and thought it was interesting, a feature of Mastodon apparently? Wondering if this feature might allow the moderator to note why they took such action against the account in question? I'm mainly curious. The account that brought this up is @alt_Budget_cuts and appears to be a person or bot to be bot that randomizes content (cool art, youtube videos) along with the same bright yellow posts about workers/companies/budgets to try and drive people to a "How to get rich" website...I don't really know what the this account is. Looks like they have a twitter account too but can't tell what they post on their because fuck Elmo. The website doesn't seem to be selling anything that I can tell...the ideology and what exactly they are trying to say is confusing...maybe it's bad (racist or something) and I am just too dense to tell.
The photos and etc that they post are actually pretty cool so I'm sure a lot of people follow back when they request to follow...I will definitely not...wondering what the mastodon.world admins saw or encountered that necessitated this? What types of reasons would you choose to mute and not ban?
- Automatic boosting of secondary account?
I would like to split my Mastodon acctivity to two accounts because I have german and english speaking followers. The english speakers don't need the german stuff but I would like to have the english stuff on the german one so I need some way to auto boost all posts from the english account with my german one.
- Is there a Mastodon instance that scraps Twitter like Nitter?
It would be interesting to see Nitter integrated in a Mastodon instance. There are some accounts in Twitter worth following in all this noise, and getting their feed natively in Mastodon would be super nice without all the ads and algorithm crap.
- mstdn.ca is heavily censoring posts critical of Israel, be aware
I don't think this post is anti semitic or promoting a hateful ideology, it is me expressing a known fact that Israel and its lobby groups heavily lobbying the US. Simple as that.
My account was just suspended, I highly recommend anyone who has this viewpoint to simply not express it here. The fediverse and Mastodon and Lemmy are all a sham.
Really disappointed to be honest. I was hoping I could post my opinion and not have the left wing brigade show up to censor me or "educate" me. Fuck censorship and fuck Israel.
UPDATED: net::ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED when I try to appeal on mstdn.ca....lol talk about spiteful. Must be a Montreal server. Big Jewish population in Montreal. Makes sense....added their API to my blokada Blocklist.
- Hashtags not populating?
Hi,
I ran an instance of Mastodon end of last year but took it down a moth later.
Now I'm getting back into Mastodon with a new instance, this time running it from Docker.
The last time I ran my Mastodon instance, I pretty much got an e-mail every day to approve new trending hashtags.
Now in my new instance, I got one email and approved one hashtag (#introduction), but since then I have gotten no emails. Also the trending hashtags list is empty. I checked the postgres database and the
tags
table is full of records.Am I missing something here? Or should I wait a couple more days?
- Why are Mastodon's trending hashtags like this?
Every day, they seem to be pretty much the exact same.
Coming from the bird site where you could actually get a gauge on what was happening in the world right now, Mastodon's trending hashtags seem so ... banal?
- So... what's the best mastodon server to join as a new user?
I just downloaded the app to see what's all the hype about, and once again, I'm asked to pick a group, in this case, a server.
I suppose it's like Lemmy instances, so, is there a general one, or an equivalent of lemmy.world in terms of size, interaction, and so on?
My mistake if I'm understanding things wrong, thanks!

- Is Mastodon eventaully consistent?
I've yet to make an account on Mastodon and I'm wondering, how good are its consistency guarantees? Do posts get lost? Will they eventually get to all federated instances?
From my Lemmy experience, posts do get lost here, from time to time. Is it the same on Mastodon?
- How is your instance performance?
With the recent influx my instance is barely able to keep up. I am talking about loading times of 10 seconds and more for thread comments which are near instantaneous for smaller servers. Search is technically unusable.
So how is your experience with that? Have you had to migrate your account because of that?

- Why some Mastodon accounts 'have' the same number of followers from Twitter?
This is one from many examples.
I understand that this bot account mirrors the tweets into Mastodon, but how is it normal that it also mirrors the number of followers? Is it a bug?
If you check their followers list, they have a few hundreds at most.

- Making custom feeds based on hashtags?
I'm new to mastodon, never had twitter. But I'm open to trying something new after leaving reddit.
Mastodon looks like it has plenty of content but I want to browse it in a specific way and I can't figure out how. I don't really care to follow individual users, but I want to browse hashtags based on my interests.
It would be great if I could create a group of them to have custom feeds I could browse. For example: a hobby feed could consist of #3DPrinting #woodworking #diy #makers #diyprojects etc etc
The lists feature would be perfect if you were able to add hashtags to it. Maybe there is a non-native solution I haven't seen?
- iOS app suggestions for mastodon
Hello, I want to switch to mastodon from twitter can anyone suggest me the best app on iOS to make the transition.
- PSA: Please do not self censor public figures' names on your CW
I know this has been the norm on Twitter, but I'm getting tired of seeing people use mock names like "Melon Usk", "the Muskrat" when referring to Elon Musk, or "the Cheetoh", "the Grump" when talking about Trump, and so on.
First of all, there is no need. There's no central authority in Mastodon who will hide your post because you criticize a notable person.
Second, if you don't want shills to find your post based on the person you criticize, you don't need to worry about it, this is precisely why full-text search is disabled on Mastodon: to protect you from dogpilers.
Third, because distorted names mess up people's filters. I know folks who explicitly add "Elon Musk" or "Trump" to their filters so these posts won't appear in their timelines. By trying to be clever, you accidentally make those people's online experiences worse.
Just use the actual name of the person you're criticizing or insulting and let the filters do their work.
BTW, if you're extra worried about people finding your post, just set your post's privacy mode to followers-only🔒.
Thank you.
